Todays loose lead walking course meets at the Crown Pub car park, Albrighton for an 11am start. Please bring an extra water bottle that you can carry for your dog.

I shouldn't think so much.
I do not regard myself as a force free trainer. The reason I say this is that I am not able to define force and regardless of whether I agree with another trainer on the definition, II have no way of knowing how my dogs define it. I’m sure that Jellybean and Peanut would have a different definition from me. They’d probably disagree with each other about the definition. I know with absolute certainty that they disagree with each other about what constitutes a reinforcer and what constitutes an aversive.
How do I know this? Because they told me so. And if you’re observant enough most dogs will tell you exactly what they regard a reinforcer or and aversive.
Jellybean and Peanut were trained in a similar way, even though they had different characters. Maybe this was part of the problem.
Jellybean was more reserved and stand offish, but strong willed. Peanut was enthusiastic to the point of wildness at times and something of the class clown. A raised eyebrow would upset Jellybean, whilst hitting Peanut over the head with a mallet wouldn’t have dampened Peanut’s lust for life and mischief.
Their differences were highlighted perfectly when both dogs were taught to track. Tracking training was absorbed by both dogs quite easily and both were taught passive article indication as a separate exercise, through positive reinforcement. Initially for accurately indicating the article for one second, and as we progressed to holding a steady, motionless indication in order to have the behaviour marked and reinforced with a treat. Both mastered it quickly.
Both dogs tracked beautifully; Jellybean being much quicker over the ground, whilst Peanut was slower and much more methodical in her approach, exactly the opposite of what I’d have expected based upon their individual personalities.
By the time they were about 9 months old both were more than ready to have a crack at the UK Tracking Dog Association Novice award.

Loose lead walking is distinctly different from heelwork. We run specific loose lead walking courses for our clients. Lessons begin with theory and practice in a nuetral environment and each week we tackle a progressively more challenging locations. Classes are smaller than our usual classes so book early for our next 5 week long course which begins at 11am on Saturday 15th of June.

She is very keen on the 6 foot scale, but she has to go over then pause in a position chosen by her handler, and recall on command.
In this session Ella is focusing on getting a pause in the stand position, at a place which enables Peanut sufficient space to come back over safely.
She is being reinforced for holding the correct position for a second or two. 🖐
