Our adults and juvies are now going into brumation.
We personally use straw for our western hermanni to act as an insulating barrier (as they stay close to the surface).
With our eastern herman, most have dug down. They go down furthur as the temps drop. The soil again acts as an insulating medium. We find our easterns averagely dig down 12" with surface temps 5-6c
We have over 50 tortoise going through this process.

Stumpy laid 5 today, bringing 85th egg of the season. A bumper year for eggs. Not all will hatch however better out than in. Our upgraded incubator is nearly full!

Over the years, we have had our hermanni hermanni group. We only had 2 females lay. This year, we have another 3 layers that have decided the conditions are suitable. As it stands, we currently have 68 eggs in our incubator. May has truely been fruitful for us. Her 1st clutch of 3 eggs. Not bad at all.

Yesterday we found our 60th egg of the season so far! A mixture of hermanni hermanni and hermanni boettgeri. Not all of these eggs will be viable. However its great to see we have so many new layers that have finally decided their enclosure are providing perfect laying conditions!

Nesting season is in full swing here. This year we have had 3 boettgeri and 2 hermanni hermanni decide to lay for the 1st time for us. Here we have Starburst laying her 1st clutch. She laid 3 large eggs.

t's a bit of a mad one! 😱 These eggs are from a hermanni hermanni. 🐢 Typically they lay 1-3 eggs. This female (2nd picture) laid 6 large eggs!

We have had 2 layers from our eastern herman ( hermanni boettgeri )group. Stumpy 2nd pic and maud 3rd.
