HAVE YOU BEEN AT HOME DURING THE PANDEMIC? If you have been spending most of your time at home your dog(s) will be very used to this situation and could feel far more anxious than they previously did when left at home alone. This is the time to get your dog used to your absence. Purposefully leave your dog at home even if they could come with you during the run up to your return to work. If they are very anxious start off small, even being in a different part of your house and build up the time. Kongs and chews are also useful to develop a more positive mindset.

T Touch for fireworks. This does work!

It’s bonfire night tomorrow, check out a couple of ways to help keep your dog calm against fireworks and thunder! 🐶💥⛈

03/11/2019

Prepare for Fireworks!
Take your dog out in day hours only, ensure dog is toileted before dark. Check gates and fencing. Get your dinner etc done early so that you can be with your dog. Draw the curtains and have the radio/tv on, perhaps a bit louder than usual. Be normal and don't get aggravated with fireworks. Comfort your dog if they are distressed but don't overdo it and stay in the room with your dog. If you have to go open the front door ensure your dog is closed in the room first so there is no chance of the dog bolting. There are various medications/plug in's you can try. Thundershirts are also very good. Visit your vet if it is very severe and if your dog suffers from pain medicate to ensure he/she is comfortable as this can make a dog more noise sensitive.

Play Biting is normal and an important part of puppy development. Teaching your puppy to inhibit the bites is done through shaping natural play behaviour. This training should begin the moment you get your new puppy and preferably before 18 weeks when they begin to develop adult teeth 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾

Puppies and socialisation..... this is on my mind currently. Be mindful about what you want eventually. I took my daughter's puppy out for socialisation a few times when he was younger. I would go to a new place, sometimes quite a busy place and just stay in one place and do things with him. I ask him to sit, give treat, make sure he saw what was going on around him, get his attention, treat. For me this is good "socialisation" - or habitualization possibly more correctly. We want puppy to learn that life around him is not scary, it is also not the most important thing - YOU ARE. Puppy must encounter (see/be conscious of - not play with) adults, children including babies, dogs, cats, cars, bicycles, skateboards.... list is endless to learn that the world out there is not scary and overwhelming.
