Throughout November 2022, overlapping with World Antibiotic Awareness Week (18th-24th November) many veterinary practices are holding an antibiotic amnesty where you can return any unused or partially used (e.g. extra or out of date) antibiotic medications to your veterinary practice for safe disposal.
Antibiotics can end up polluting our soil and water and should not be:
• Disposed of down the sink
• Flushed down the toilet
• Thrown in the bin
Increased antibiotics in the water means more bacterial resistance to antibiotics and this is harmful to both people and pets, therefore they should be disposed of safely.
You can help by taking part in the amnesty and bringing any unused or partially used antibiotics to your veterinary practice for safe disposal, so we can help keep antibiotics working for when they are really needed.
We also have a short survey for you to complete, anonymously if preferred, to help find out more about the reasons behind leftover antibiotics in pets and how people dispose of them.
