The process of a Gastroscope!
As we have a gastroscope offer this February we thought we would share the process ...
🐴-First food is withheld overnight to make sure there is no food in the horses stomach.
🐴-The horses water is then removed in the morning 1 hour before the scope. This is to make sure the horses belly is empty and we can get a clear image of the horses stomach.
🐴-The scope equipment is then set up.
🐴-The horse is then walked into the clinic and sedated to make them comfortable. Then lead into the stocks.
🐴-The scope, which is a long tube with a camera on the end, is then inserted into one of the horses nostrils down into the stomach. A screen will then show the image of the stomach so it can be checked for ulcers.
🐴-The horse can then go back to its stable to wake up.
🐴-Once awake the horse can then be fed soaked hay in a small holed net. A small holed net is used so that the horse is reintroduced food slowly and soaked hay is used because it is more easily digested to help prevent colic.
🐴- Any treatment needed will then be given/prescribed.
If you suspect your horse could have ulcers ring reception and book in on 01245 429025 📞

Performance check over for this boy who had a change of normal behaviour. Upon gastroscopy stomach ulcers were found - treatment was then administered. A routine dental rasp reduced any sharp edges of the teeth and finally a sheath clean revealed a very large smegma bean! Hopefully he will be feeling much more himself 🐴🩺❤️ #blaircourtequine #equinevet #equinemedicine #vet #largeanimalvet #vetmed #equinevetnurse #vetnurse #vetlife #veterinary
⚠️⚠️ Clinical Procedure ⚠️⚠️
Follow this patient through surgery!
This patient came in for surgery and is now at home and doing well. Patients are usually admitted the day before a planned surgery to allow for preparations to be made. This can include shoe removal (if not already removed by the patients farrier), catheterisation and site preparation (clipping, cleaning and bandaging) if required.
The morning of the surgery the patient will have a further vet check to confirm the horse is happy and healthy enough for general anaesthesia. Drugs are administered that are required before surgery and the feet and tail are wrapped to prevent any contamination. The mouth is flushed to ensure it is empty and clean.
The horse is then lead into the knockdown box (padded room) and the anaesthetic drugs are administered. Our team, usually a nurse and two vets assist the horse to the ground before a breathing tube and hoist are connected.
Once in theatre the horse is closely monitored by our anaesthetist vet. The nurse and surgeon will further prepare the surgical site before beginning the surgery.
Once the surgery is completed the horse will be transferred back into the recovery box. As soon as the patient is steady on their feet they are taken back to the stable to continue to recover.

Watch a lameness work up..
This horse presented with bucking and discomfort under saddle. After trot up and lunging assessment, our RVN Abby rode and found the same issues as described by the owner.
Following blocking of the sacroiliac and suspensory ligaments this horse was much more comfortable under saddle.
After a lameness exam the appropriate care can be given. This can either be further investigation, treatment and/or rest.

Please be careful out riding! 🐴🏇🏻
Although it’s great fun to gallop across the stubble, the ground is incredibly hard and many fields have deep cracks 🌾🏇🏻

We are often asked by owners how to apply a poultice so here’s the next ‘how to’ video of the series!
Poultice material, self adhesive bandages and black tape are essential for any equine first aid kit 🐴
Syringing medication can be a fiddly task...
Cath explains the best way to administer a wormer(or oral medication) and the importance of knowing your horses weight!
Our weigh bridge is free to use!
Just to note, Victor didn’t require worming at this time so he had a demo syringe filled with some molasses!!
Here’s the second short clip from our ‘How to’ series.
In this video, Cheylee demonstrates how to apply a medical bandage.
It is important to know how to apply a medical bandage correctly- a poorly applied bandage can cause more harm than good. Pressure sores can occur, the risk of infection is increased and it can exacerbate the wound.
For more advice regarding bandaging, please contact the office on 01245 429025.
