Say Hi to Darcy, my latest client who I met yesterday. Isn’t she pretty? Darcy had a lot to say for herself - she’s been barking a lot, and is anxious around visitors coming to / in the house. I helped her humans to understand what was going on and how to help her to feel calmer and more relaxed.

Do you, or does someone you know, need help with their dog’s behaviour? Get in touch and let’s chat. Nine times out of ten, one consultation is all that’s needed, but I will stay in touch if you need a bit of support to put what you’ve learned in to practice, and with any cases that are a little bit more complicated.

My techniques are always based on better understanding the root cause of any issue (rather than treating it at surface level), and focus on building clarity, communication, trust and healthy boundaries, resulting in a calm, confident and well behaved dog, and happy humans!

We urge dog owners to reconsider exercising their flat-faced dogs on hot days like today! 📢

Each year, we see many flat-faced breeds, like Trojan here, suffering from severe heatstroke.

Despite sitting in the shade with plenty of water, he arrived with a high temperature of 41.3°C. 🌡️

Thankfully, his concerned owner acted quickly and came straight to us, and Trojan was able to fully recover. But not all dogs are so lucky.

Flat-faced dogs cannot regulate their temperature as easily as other dogs because of their flatter noses.

Don't take the chance! More advice on keeping your dog cool here: https://bit.ly/44zi9Jf

Meet my latest client. This photo was taken in happier days when he was able to leave the house, but sadly in more recent times he’s lost his zest for life a little. This was an interesting case working with his humans to figure out the root cause of his behaviour, which wasn’t as obvious as it first appeared on the surface.

Sometimes this work involves a bit of detective work, piecing things together and looking beyond what’s initially presented.

I’ll be keeping in touch to see how he’s getting on.

More helpful reminders for the hot weather. Look after your four legged friends folks. 🐕 ☀️

Please give this a share as not everyone knows / thinks of these things.

Give this a share in this warm weather🌡️🥵🌡️Even the most well meaning owners can take dangerous risks in this weather.

If in doubt, don't go out.

Heatstroke kills your pets, and quickly.

How to prevent heatstroke:

🌬️Keep pets in the shade and cooler temperatures
🌬️Constant access to plenty of fresh cool water
🌬️Never have them in hot cars
🌬️ Exercise and walks at dawn or dusk if temperatures are suitable
🌬️Check substrate temperatures with the back of your hand before exercise - if it's hot for you, it's too hot for them

Do you know what the signs of heatstroke in your pets are?

🌡️Heavy panting and difficulty breathing
🌡️ Excessively drooling
🌡️Appears lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated
🌡️Collapsed or vomiting

Would you know what to do?

✅Move to a cooler area
✅Immediately pour as cold as possible water over their body
❌Wet towels placed over the pet can worsen the condition, trapping heat.
✅In a true emergency water immersion or pouring water with air movement
✅Allow to drink small amounts of cool water
✅Continue to pour cool water over until their breathing starts to settle, but not too much that they start shivering
✅Pets that have lost consciousness will stop panting, despite still having a very high temperature, these pets require urgent aggressive cooling as a priority.
❌Try to avoid pouring water on or near your pets head, as there is a risk of them inhaling water which could lead to drowning, especially for flat-faced and unconscious pets
✅Once the pet is cool, take them to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.

As we go in to this week’s predicted heatwave, it’s worth sharing this reminder.

I know my dog loving followers don’t need reminding, but please share to remind others. Thank you, and thanks for sharing Feathers and Fur Pet Services.

Despite the warnings, hundreds of dogs in the UK die every year after being left in a hot car. Someone you know may need to read this very important message.

SIX MINUTES is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot car.

Your dog could suffer serious injury or die in a matter of minutes if left alone in a car.

• The temperature inside a closed vehicle left in the sun can double within 12 minutes.

• At least 75% of the temperature increase in a closed vehicle occurs within 5 minutes of closing the vehicle, and at least 89% of the temperature increase occurs within 15 minutes of closing the vehicle.

• Temperatures exceeding 40°c can lead to death or serious injury for the occupants.

• Temperatures in a closed vehicle sitting in the hot sun can reach 70˚c and above. An animal will suffer immeasurably and may die before the temperature reaches 65˚c

• Even when parked in the shade, the vehicle temperatures can exceed 40°c.

• Leaving windows down more than 2 inches on an unattended vehicle will not prevent a car from reaching extreme temperatures.

• Even if the animal is revived, they can die due to severe internal organ damage.

Your dog trusts you to have their best interest at heart ALWAYS.
Please don’t risk their safety.

If you are not taking your dog inside your destination with you, PLEASE leave them at home where they are comfortable and safe.

I spent some time with this little chap, Alfie, and his family, on Friday. His owners got in touch for help with some behaviours he was displaying. By looking at the bigger picture and then noticing small, subtle signs, I was able to help them understand the possible root causes for what they were seeing, and make recommendations to enable him to be a happier, more relaxed boy.

Also here’s my partner’s dog Oscar - who is very special because he brought us together!

I recently got to meet this little guy - Buster - when his family asked me to get them on the right track from the start of their relationship with him.

It’s really sensible to look at how can you make sure you’re encouraging the right behaviours right from the start, to ensure a happy, confident and well behaved dog. Particularly with breeds such as border collies, which are highly intelligent, sensitive dogs who need careful handling and the right kind of stimulation.

Buster’s owner says “I can’t recommend Chris enough… He is fantastic, knowledgeable, understanding, explains everything clearly and Buster really listened to him.” Thanks so much Esther. 😊 (And just so you know, I don’t just have a chat with the dog, I talk to the humans too. 😉)

Today I had the pleasure of judging the Tails of Hartwell fun dog show at Courteenhall Estate church fete. We saw so many lovely dogs and great handlers - well done to you all! And thank you Tracey for asking me. Amongst the categories were the best oldie (won by an amazing 16 year old terrier!), best young handler and the waggiest tail!

Here are a few pictures taken by my official photographer - my 7 year old son.

Well today was a huge success working with this dog that has aggression issues. Spent 2 1/2hrs walking around a park, helping the owners understand the body language of their dog, for when to eliveiate the stress to observing the dog was being comfortable. My STAR approach helped the owners have a clear understanding on what to do in all situations and events to help their dog become less fearful and more confident. Dog owners were really pleased. 😊

Klogs has developed a fear towards one of her owners, this association has occurred through no fault of the owner, but through a classical conditioning code.

Left the owners with a counter-fear action plan, and received a message last night to say that Klogs had taken a food treat from her owner!

This is a massive step forward because it hasn't happened within the home in the 4 months that Klogs has been with her owners.

UK Wide Dog Behaviourist

Hi my name is Chris Rose professional dog behaviourist and often described as a dog whisperer. You may have seen me on TV, inside out programme aired September 2019. Or at times featured on local radio.

I have been working throughout the UK helping to train dogs with general obedience problems like loose lead recall to more intense dog behaviour problems including dog aggression and separation anxiety, and other behaviours like fear and nervousness to visitors.

All my training is based on positive reinforcement. A proactive way, encouraging good behaviours before the unwanted behaviours manifest.

My methods are easy to learn, and works on any dog breed. There is never hardly any need for a follow up.
