Happy National Dog Day! 🐶🤗 Here are a few of my favourite photos of my own dog Biggles who will be 16 next year. 😱🤯

We feel extremely grateful to still have him in our lives especially after his stroke a few years back. He is a senior dog so we have had to adapt a few things to help him to still enjoy doggie life.

He is still able to come with us to most places and to experience new areas, lots of new sniffs to keep his brain active and engaged.

Things are a little slower paced now than what they used to be but that’s never a negative as once you slow down you actually get a chance to notice life a lot more. 🐶🧠🥰❤️🌳🏕️

I’m truly grateful and thankful for all the sweet natured, sociable, friendly and funny pups (and lovely humans) who make this more than just a job – it’s a real joy to me. 💕🐕🙂

We walk smart, not hot! 🌡️That means shady routes, plenty of water, and no sizzling hot pavements. slower or shorter pace but safety comes first.

Friendly reminder that it is prime ADDER 🐍 breeding season and they will be most active around this time in long grass and undergrowth especially in this extreme hot weather ☀️ so please please take extra care and ⚠️ caution when out walking your dogs or naturally you can get me to. 😁😉🦮🐾

Adders will be basking in the sunshine around path edges where there is more clearance so If you're entering more wild, grassier areas, pop dogs on their leads so they don't accidentally bump into one on their own. Adders are generally quite shy and do retreat when scared but if they're taken off guard, bites do and can happen like today sadly in Hereford neither the dog nor the adder was at fault. ☹️

As the saying goes, “no dog is dying for a walk, but it may die if taken for a walk”.

Stick to early and late walks if you must.

It’s generally okay to take a dog out for a short walk for a ‘leg stretch’ even in warm weather, but it's crucial to prioritise their safety and well-being.

1. Pavement safety:

Test the pavement temperature with your hand before walking your dog. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws.

2. Shade and Hydration:

Walk in shaded areas
whenever possible to minimise sun exposure.
Bring water and encourage your dog to drink frequently.
Watch for signs of dehydration or overheating.

3 Exercise alternatives:

If it’s too hot for a walk,
consider indoor playtime or other activities that don’t require going outside.

Playing in the water (if safe and supervised) can also be a good way to help your dog cool down. 🐶🐕🐾💦

Archie has had a very busy day at the care home playing the role of an unofficial dementia therapy dog.

He has such a wonderful temperament, he was patient and gentle with the residents and would definitely make the perfect candidate for a full time role.

There were lots of treats, fuss and cuddles and everybody really adored him.

Well done Archie ❤️
