Don’t let flystrike be an issue this summer! 🐰🐰 Get flystrike prevention for your bunny with the Pet Health Club! Not sure what flystrike is? It’s a serious condition that can be fatal to rabbits. It happens as a result of flies laying their eggs on a rabbit’s fur. 🪰 Flies do this when the fur is dirty or damp, and it’s usually the fur around the rabbit’s bottom that is affected. The eggs hatch into maggots and these maggots eat away at the rabbit’s skin, which can lead to severe infection and in some cases, death. It’s preventable with regular treatment and ensuring your rabbit’s hutch is clean and their bottom is clean! https://bit.ly/PracticePetHealthClub

This is Quince de bois - such a gorgeous boy who came in for the day to be castrated.

In picture 1: Quince is having a fuss from Chris our vet nurse whilst he settles into his kennel. 🐾

In picture 2: you will see Quince having his general anaesthetic to make him unaware and pain free during his procedure.

In picture 3: whilst Quince is fast asleep, Chris is inserting a microchip which will help him be returned to his owner if ever he ventured too far. This is law by 10th June so if you haven’t had this done please book in.

In picture 4: Quince has woken up and has decided to have some yummy food before he was reunited with his owners.

Happy castrate day QUINCE 🐾🐾

DID YOU KNOW?

Neospora Caninum is a parasite that can infect cattle, sheep, goats and camelids. Neospora is the most commonly diagnosed cause of bovine abortion or stillbirths in the UK, and its prevalence is growing worldwide. Farm animals are at risk from infected dog faeces. Please be mindful of other animals and clean up after your dog when walking in the countryside.

How's your knowledge of fleas? People often think if you can't see fleas on your pet, then there's no need to worry. However, this is not often the case. Fleas jump so quickly that it can be impossible to see them on your pet and often owners will only know if they notice flea dirt on their pet (🤢). When you see fleas on your pet, it's normally because the parasite treatment you've given them has started to work and they've slowed down. This is why giving regular flea treatment is important, to keep those pesky parasites off our floofy pets. Pet Health Club has got you covered, with year-round protection for fleas, ticks, worms and any other icky parasites that may be lurking in your area. https://bit.ly/PracticePetHealthClub

Here is an example of some of the things our nursing team do for your pets behind the scenes🐾

SVN Georgia demonstrating her skills as a lab technician whilst staining some slides for ear cytology 🔬

A patient came in with itchy ears! A swab sample was taken to test for parasites, yeasts of infections ! 🦠🧫

Our nursing team will stain up the slides using a 3 part system of chemicals which bind the sample cells to the slide and stain them so they are visible under the microscope! They then a**lyse the slide under high magnification to see the individual cells!

Our nurses are able to identify abnormal or concerning aspects of cells and alert the vet who comes to check the slide and form a diagnosis for the patient 🐾

‼️Can you believe all these grass seeds were removed from one dog! 🐶
Poor Fozzy not only had one in his ear (bottom right), but all the rest of the grass seeds were found on his paws (between his toes and pads). 😖🐾The bottom left picture shows how they start embedding in the skin. Not only do they cause pain, inflammation and infection, but if left undetected they can track through the body, in some cases tracking as far as the chest! 😲
🐾Here are a few things you can do to minimise this becoming an issue with your dog:
- 🐶keep fur on paws and ears trimmed short during summer and autumn.
- 🐶Check your dog routinely after a walk. As well as ears and paws, also check eyelids and lip folds which can also be problem sites.
-🐶Brush your dog regularly to remove seeds or burrs which can get caught up in the coat.
