πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰FANTASTIC JOB OPPORTUNITYπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

Job Specification: Livestock Manager
Location: Perrystone Estate & Brockhampton Estate
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports to: Farm Manager
Context
Our farm is situated across two large, seemingly contiguous estates totalling 4,500 acres, of which 1,000
acres is grassland and 800 acres is woodland.
On the grassland we run a pedigree flock of Coloured Ryeland’s and a herd that will soon to be pure Ruby
Red Devon, but currently has some Devon cross cattle. Both are predominantly raised on grass.
We also run a small herd of native breed pigs in the woodland. These receive a small supplementary
feed, but mostly forage for their food.
This winter we will calve 80 cows. In the next year or so this will rise to 100. There are 60 Ryeland’s that
are due to lamb in the spring. We hope to reach 200 breeding ewes in the next couple of years. Currently
winter β€˜tack’ sheep supplement our flock. The pigs are bought in and can increase with demand.
Our estate is in beautiful, unspoilt, agricultural countryside. We are in the Wye Valley with significant
portions of the estate enjoying either AONB or SSSI status.
Our ground is bordered on two sides by the River Wye. We are currently involved in a Landscape Recovery
scheme alongside 49 other landowners covering 12,500 acres. The objective is to develop and
implement long term measures that improve the quality of the Wye Valley.
It is the natural beauty of the land and our responsibility for its care that has influenced our choice of
breeds and their husbandry. This mission to have the most positive of outcomes for our animals has led
to our desire to market our meat direct to customers who share our values.
We currently direct sell as much produce as possible and are in the process of developing our own on-
site butchery unit which will give us the opportunity and flexibility to turn our carcasses into the highest
quality meat.
Key Responsibilities
Your role will be to develop our premium livestock business. To this end you will work with the Farm
Manager and others (marketing team, butcher, etc) to enable the supply of the highest quality animals
to fulfil the demand of direct marketing channels throughout the year.
Animal Husbandry Duties:
β€’ Coordinate and execute breeding programs, including managing breeding cycles, record-
keeping and calving/lambing.
β€’ Manage grassland and feed resources to ensure optimal nutrition and health for livestock.
β€’ Maintain accurate records of animal growth, health, and breeding.
β€’ Conduct regular health and performance checks, liaising with veterinarians and other
professionals to ensure optimum health and performance.
β€’ Responsible for daily care of livestock, including feeding, watering, and health monitoring.
Marketing and Social Media Support:
β€’ Collaborate with the marketing department to develop content that highlights the livestock and
their care.
β€’ Through the marketing department use social media platforms to showcase daily farm
activities, animal welfare practices, and unique stories about the livestock.
β€’ Participate in promotional events, farm tours, and other activities to engage with customers and
promote the Estate and butchery.
β€’ Provide insights on the quality and characteristics of livestock to assist in confirming the
product offering for the butchery and menu development for the (potential) associated
restaurant.
β€’ Ideally be a talented communicator happy to present stories about the animals on social media
and become the voice and face of the brand.
General Management Duties:
β€’ Develop the livestock enterprises to meet the demands of the developing butchery.
β€’ Supervise and train staff in animal husbandry and care practices.
β€’ Ensure compliance with local and government regulations and schemes regarding livestock and
grassland management, including Wyescapes Landscape Recovery and Red Tractor Certified
Standards.
β€’ Develop and implement best practices for sustainability and environmental stewardship in
livestock and grassland management.
β€’ Participate in budgeting and resource management for livestock operations, working to the
agreed budget.
β€’ Assist with benchmarking to measure and manage performance.
β€’ Assist other Farm and Estate departments with β€˜front of house’ works to maintain Estate
aesthetics.
Qualifications/Attributes:
β€’ Relevant qualification in Animal Science, Agriculture, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
β€’ Minimum of 10 years’ experience in livestock management or animal husbandry.
β€’ Strong understanding of animal welfare practices and regulations.
β€’ Familiarity with social media platforms and their use.
β€’ Interested in food and cooking
β€’ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
β€’ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
β€’ Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
β€’ Full UK Driving Licence.
