Ball and toy throwing is the next topic. Im afraid if your dog does already have joint issues then it is best not to throw a ball, or a toy too many times. If they have severe issues stop throwing them at all. You can roll a ball along the floor, or you can hide a ball, or a toy for your dog to find. If you have a young dog please remember that ball and toy throwing puts huge forces through joints. It is best to roll the ball for dogs under 12 months and even with more mature fit dogs, keep the throwing to short periods. Long periods of time throwing toys can potentially do damage over time. Dogs do really enjoy these kinds of games but please remember adrenaline will take over and you often find although they will engage in these activities, even when they are in pain, they will suffer greatly for it after

So next we have flooring. Slippery flooring is a nightmare for any dog with joint problems. If your dog is struggling to get around and you have any slippery flooring, then put down some mats, or rugs to enable your dog to get some grip. It stops unwanted abduction, or adduction as they try to stabilise their legs

We have had a lot of dogs coming through with joint issues over the last few weeks, so I thought it was worth while going through the main points that can help your dog. So first up is weight.
Weight is not just an issue because it puts pressure on joints and organs. Although this image is extreme, we still see a lot of dogs carrying too much weight. Mum and dad think they are being cruel restricting the dog's food but actually it is vital to do so, if you want to help your dog. Weight puts a lot more pressure on the joints but fat also produces lots more inflammatory cytokines making your dogs plight even worse. If your dog is sufferering with its joints you need to make sure that you keep them at their perfect weight, or even just a little lean, to make sure you are doing everything that you can to ease their discomfort. It is not easy to get weight off your dog and they will always tell you that they are starving and need more but if you are feeding the right amount they do not need any extra, no matter what they are telling you. also weight the food, handfuls, or cups are never accurate, so you may be feeding more than you think you are

Morning. I have held out in the hope but yet again the weather on a Saturday is rubbish. Im really sorry all classes will have to be cancelled today both agility and hoopers. Really sorry. As we are nearing the end of the season now the 1pm class will not be running as of next session, so the last class will be 12.15pm. This means hoopers will start at 1.30 not 2.15 for the last few sessions.

tomorrow the temperature is supposed to reach 30 degrees late afternoon/ evening. for that reason I am cancelling all classes tomorrow evening, puppy, older puppy and gold classes
if you are doing puppy and older puppy you should have received an email from me with a zoom link on. I will hold a zoom meeting at 6.30pm to go through last weeks exercises and also the new ones for this week, so a class via zoom just for this week only. sorry but travelling in a car is not safe at that temperature and although there is a lot of shade in the garden, that is a bit too hot

So now all the exams are out of the way I have knuckled down and continued with the e books. The nutrition one is being proof read but this one is now available to buy. There are a few others to come. Canine amputation and IVDD guides are literally about to be downloaded. These can be purchased from Stan.store/lisajdogs

As I upload each one I will post. I am writing ones on canine cognitive dysfunction and Iliopsoas injuries along with a couple more. Watch this space for more exciting news.

So I have been a bit slack in following through with the session for people looking at walking with aids, or mobility scooters. is this something people would find useful. Maybe clients would be happy to share what types of equipment they are using and good places to buy from? let me know if this is of interest. a bit of a tea and chat along with some practical for those that want it. I want to do the session before the weather gets too bad again. comment if you think this is a good idea. thanks
