The date and nature of the original Thanksgiving is contested, but in 1941 President Roosevelt signed a resolution to establish the "fourth Thursday in November as the Federal Thanksgiving Day Holiday" (The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, 2021). At this time, Thanksgiving was about the start of shopping for the holiday season (Roosevelt was keen to support retail), sharing a special dinner and expressing thanks for blessings.
