SEASONAL CANINE ILLNESS

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is a recently described condition which currently has no known cause. It affects dogs shortly after walking in woodland and can be fatal, though often isn’t if treated early. It’s most commonly seen between August and November, hence the name seasonal.

SCI has been seen in dogs of any age, gender or breed, but doesn’t seem to affect other animals such as cats. Dogs become unwell roughly 24-72 hours after walking in woodland, with symptoms primarily affecting the gastrointestinal tract. These can include signs such as:

Vomiting.
Diarrhoea.
Abdominal pain.
Lethargy.
Not eating.
Muscle tremors.
On examination some dogs will have a higher than normal body temperature.

Be wary of antifreeze ❄️

If your cat or dog ingests antifreeze, they're at serious risk of acute kidney failure or even death.

Pets enjoy the taste of antifreeze (especially cats) so it's important to keep it well out of their reach. If you spill antifreeze, be sure to clean it up immediately.

Symptoms of antifreeze poisoning include:
Vomiting
Depression
Seizures
Difficulty breathing
Generally appearing uncoordinated

If your pet shows any of these signs, contact your vet right away.

How cold is too cold for your dog to go on a walk?
Just like heatwaves, cold weather can also be dangerous to walk dogs in, with your canine friend at risk of developing hypothermia, frostbite and cracked pads from being outside in freezing temperatures.

Dexter & Teddy came into surgery last week for their castration
They comforted each other as they both recovered 🤒
If you have small furries that are companions that are used to being together we would always advise bringing them in together to help reduce any stress. ❤️
Even if one of them doesn’t need surgery we will happily look after them for the day just so their companion feels happier 🐰

What can be done about gum disease? 🦷 🐾

We all brush our own teeth every day to remove plaque build up and help prevent gum disease.

Pets need exactly the same 🦷 🪥
Some pets are less co-operative to teeth brush so starting them early can be a really good lesson. Trying a little bit at a time in adults and older pets can also be really good training too with plenty of reassurance.
Alternative products can also be used if brushing is a big no go!
• Dental treats
• Dental rinses
• Dental pastes
•Dental foods
Book in an appointment with one of our nurses who can talk through all the products available and give lessons on the best way to help your pets teeth 👩‍⚕️

What causes gum disease 🦷

Gum disease is caused by dental plaque, which is a bacteria laden paste that forms naturally on teeth. Plaque causes inflammation of the gum tissue, this is called Gingivitis. It can be identified by a red line where the gum meets the tooth.
When plaque is not removed it hardens into tartar. Tartar is a mineral deposit on the tooth which is firmly attached.
Tartar, also known as calculus, aids further build up of plaque by providing a rough surface for plaque to latch on to. If the gum inflammation (gingivitis) is not stopped by adequate daily plaque removal then this will progress to gum disease.

• Behavioural changes (less active or less inclined to play)
• Loss of part of the tooth surface
• Areas of your cat’s gums that appear to be enlarged

Looking After Your Cat’s Teeth 🐱 🦷

Happy cats have healthy mouths…
Part of being healthy is having a healthy mouth.
Good teeth & gums are important for more than just eating. Cats use their mouths to groom, catch things & to hold and play with toys
Dental disease in cats can be hard to spot as cats are great at hiding pain by eating normally.
All cats can be affected by dental disease however it is very common in crossbreeds, Bengals, Siameses, Maine C***s, British Shorthairs & Persians
During your annal health check the vet will check your cats mouth and make recommendations where needed
If you have any concerns you can always book in with the one of our nurses or vets
* Please note nurse consultations are free, however only advice on good dental hygiene can be recommended.
The nurse may refer you to a vet for diagnosis of dental disease if they have any concerns. A vet appointment charge will be applicable in this circumstance

There are lots of different insurance policies out there. Before you commit, make sure you get the right insurance for you. Make sure you get the right policy from the offset as changing insurance providers can have consequences. Anything noted in the clinical notes will be classed as pre-existing and unlikely to be covered if you swap policies.
