Most equine owners know that a negative Coggins test is a document required to be able to transport their animal across state lines, enter them in a competitive event, or board at someone's barn. But what does the phrase "negative Coggins test" actually mean?

A "Coggins" is a blood test that can only be performed by USDA-approved laboratories and checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) antibodies in the blood. EIA is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that is primarily transmitted by biting flies, particularly horseflies—which means that your animals are at risk even if they never travel or live in a closed herd.

The clinical signs of disease can vary dramatically from an acute infection to an inapparent form, but what is important to know is that it produces a persistent infection. Once an animal tests positive for EIA it becomes a lifelong source of disease transmission, so the owner can only choose between quarantine for life or humane euthanasia to ensure that large outbreaks of the disease don’t occur. There is no vaccine and no treatment for EIA.

Take-home message: While a Coggins test is a necessary travel document, don’t forget that it's also first and foremost a way to identify and remove EIA carriers to keep the disease under control.

Train according to horse ethology and cognition

𝐄𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 is the study of animal behaviour that provides information on how horses have evolved to live.

It helps to explain natural equine social structures, including the complex dynamic social organisation, with a social order that determines access to resources.

Horses need the company of their own species and readily form attachment bonds, so isolation is detrimental. They have evolved to walk and graze for about 16 hours per day and their digestive system and behaviours have adapted to this regimen.

𝐂𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 refers to the ways animals process information about the world. Compared to humans, their prefrontal cortex is diminished, so horses may not recall events as we do.

They excel at memorising and recognising stimuli that trigger certain responses, which is what keeps them safe. We must be careful not to overestimate equine intelligence (e.g., ‘he knows what he did was wrong’), especially in an attempt to justify punishment.

Equally, we should not underestimate equine intelligence by supposing that horses don’t have emotions and feelings. Both over- and underestimating horses’ intelligence can have negative welfare implications.

Although domestic horses have been bred in captivity for many generations, their social behaviour and social needs remain relatively unchanged.

Training according to the horse’s ethology and cognition means paying regard to the way horses have evolved, to their natural needs and to what motivates them.

BOX REST - my tips to make it a little easier ⬇️

👩‍⚕️ As a horse owner, rider and Vet, I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs with my own horses over the years, with plenty of required box rest and careful rehabilitation.

Whether your horse is on box rest due to a wound, a ligament injury, recent surgery or laminitis, here are my top tips to surviving these tricky times;

1️⃣ Make the best of the available ventilation… can you remove the covering from a window? During the day, could you use a grid or chain across the front of the stable instead of having the door closed all the time? This also allows the horse better visualisation of their surroundings and reduces stress levels.

2️⃣ Try altering your horse’s eating position. Consider alternating feeding hay from the floor with a safely hung haynets to mimic hedgerow browsing positions. Hide healthy treats such as sliced apples and carrots through your horse’s low-dust bedding to encourage natural foraging behaviour. Some Veterinary practices have specially trained staff who can offer independent nutritional advice, alternatively most feed companies provide excellent advice over the phone or at your yard

3️⃣ Treat balls are an excellent distraction from the monotony of box rest, just be mindful of what you are putting in them and make sure you take that out of their daily feed allowance to prevent over-feeding and unnecessary weight gain

4️⃣ If your horse is struggling with stress, speak to your Vet about available medications that might help with this anxiety. It is usually better to utilise these products to keep your horse calm, relaxed and eating well. A stressed, box-walking horse is more likely to suffer from gastric ulcers, as well as slower healing of injuries and wounds

5️⃣ Ask if your horse REALLY needs to be in a stable… would a stable-sized patch of field be suitable? This should always be led by Veterinary advice

6️⃣ Cut yourself some slack- having a horse on box rest is HARD! Take help where you can get it and try not to feel guilty!

7️⃣ Be proactive with your horse’s all-round health. Don’t forget regular farrier visits and physiotherapy or chiropractic appointments as well as routine dental care

8️⃣ Acupuncture is a great tool for aiding healing in a wide range of conditions, as well as dealing with any compensatory problems which could hold your horse back once you’re finally allowed to get back on board and have fun!
