The Saturday Kids Club. Helen Zammit Wilson Team leader. All H.A.C.K. rescued ponies are assessed, put into a routine, regularly handled and do a lot of road work /traffic training, with experienced adults in attendance, including all that it entails of pony ownership, and when they are ready ...it is the kids that do a lot of the work, because in turn they are assessed, taught about horse care, learn how to handle ponies in many situations that can arise, This in turn builds confidence, provides out door activities and a feeling of well being for all concerned. So ponies learn their manners, the kids have fun and everyone gets exercise , how fabnis that...Love Pam x

Well, that was a hard days work, blinkin snow....but at least it was Sunday, which means my son Peter was home and so I was able to hitch a lift with him in his Discovery (with heated seats, how fab is that) The steep hills each side of the sanctuary were a bit slushy and slippery but we got there safely. Ginger was able to walk down, so we manged to get all the hard work done,, all hay, feeds, and mucking out.....all fed, and goats, chickens,, and pigs well bedded down, everyone had extra treats in their feeds (we don't hand feed as it can cause problems with pushy behaviour and nipping, not allowed at H.A.C.K.) so all is well. Peter was able to take the hay on his tractor to the ponies on Pont-y-Capel, along with their water.

It is beneficial and good for mental health having access to the great outdoors, although can be challenging, but many of our volunteers have very demanding jobs so they find it rewarding supporting and helping the sanctuary. Here are a few photos of the equids today. love Pam x

Oh, The horse in the pink/blue rug is Eli the Arab who is 25 years old in the Spring, She has lost the majority of her teeth (even though I brushed them regularly for her) so she needs extra care, does she appreciate it... Nooo, little madam....

Well, Christmas went in a flash didn't it.....mind you a good part of my day was spent at the sanctuary and I have never really been a great fan of Christmas, probably due to the fact I never received the present I really wanted.. A Pony ...kid's ay... I Had to wait until I was a lot older.....But this time of year brings back a lot of happy memories, Pantomime and our wonderful little Buster " Super Star" an all the performances he did at The Little Theatre, Wrexham, with Tip Top Productions. It snowed, and as I was driving down the A483 in my old trusted Landrover (1974) I had to open the window so I could see where I was going...My friend Carol accompanied me and we got Buster there safely, 48 times.... Mind you It wouldn't be allowed these days, with all the animal welfare laws and health and safety... The thing is Buster really enjoyed it and was spoilt to death with carrots on demand, everyone loved Buster, what a star.
As many of you may or may not know, at the beginning of Oct my sister was rushed into hospital and was on end of life in critical care, as you can imagine it was a very stressful time, hours spent at her bedside, However long story short after a couple months she was transferred to the rehab hospital in Mold. On my visits there a patient on the same ward called out, "It's Pam", I was a bit "Oh" and just smiled and said hello. On my next visit Ali informed me that the lady in question was telling everyone all about Buster and his stardom because this lady was actually part of the tip top productions cast. We all wish you well Lyn for a good recovery. My sister has now left rehab and after 3 months she is now home.........Pictured here are Buster, H.A.C.K. girls and panto cast. Hope you all had a fab Christmas...Love Pam x x

Oh Ay, What a Day, what weather, you have to admire the H.A.C.K. volunteers who turn out on such a miserable, wet, cold winters day to take care and meet the needs of all the rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and the other animals that live at the sanctuary. Bill, Peter, Jane, Beth and myself battled against the elements to feed, muck out the fields and put the hay out, change rugs and then move horses onto higher ground because of the wet state on the land on the bottom fields. Well, that was fun, Ezzy got excited and fell over, more like sat down, unhurt, Eli decided to show off her paces, from extended trot to canter and flying changes, and Rishy ran the wrong way, when they get the wind under their tails they are a challenge. All we did was open the two gates so they could let themselves through, big adventure. Everyone was soaked to the skin and boy it was cold, but my day didn't end there, it was off to the feed merchants to collect this weeks feed, and so, It Rained, it snowed, it hailed, and blew a gale and our little van was battered, but we did it....Well tomorrow is another day and we do it all over again. Well done guys, such a good team and a credit to animal welfare....Oooo, I need a cup of tea. Love Pam x

Today was the last Fund-Raiser of the year. The Saturday Kids Club along with team Leader Helen, Father Christmas John with his wife Jane the elf Elf and their two dogs, not forgetting the H.A.C.K. rescued ponies, organised a tour around Bradley village, delighting Children and Adults alike. Thank you to all who donated in support of the sanctuary and we hope you enjoyed meeting the ponies. Well done to the kids club and all involved, what a fab team you are, and you managed to raised £214 .87. Well proud, Love Pam x

What a Day.... What's all this white stuff, if you think it is lovely, give a thought to those who have to venture out in it to make sure all the animals are safe, well fed, and have fresh water... Whilst Helen and Ali decided to walk to the sanctuary as they live locally I took the chance and took my van out, it wasn't too bad but on previous occasions I have been stuck down in the valley and not able to get out because the roads were too icy, (how I miss my landrover)
I don't think Ralph was too impressed with all this snow, and Irish looks resigned to it as did Eli and Ezzy. The ponies were there usual selves and tucked into their sweet smelling hay, but ever hopeful of a carrot. Here are a few photos of the horses, ponies and donkeys and our other animals.....After a long and tiring day, I was supposed to go Christmas Shopping but I suddenly felt too tired and went home instead....Well, tomorrows another day, lets hope it is a good one. Many thanks to Helen and Ali for turning out. Love Pam x x

Oh Boy, I have just seen the weather forecast for the next few days, it looks like we will be changing our not so native rescues into their winter rugs, we do not rug our Shetlands and/or natives (unless sweet Itch rugs,). as they have a double natural winter coat which consists of both short hair and long hair which keeps them toasty. They do have field shelters though.
Ralph being a thoroughbred (off the track) will deffo need his tog rated rug. Pictured here is Ralph, (cheeky Monkey) and is being ridden out by Amelia. They are doing very well, but I guess the bad weather that is coming in will stop play, lets hope it doesn't last long. In the mean time with short days and long dark nights the H.A.C.K. team work so very hard to look after all the animals and continually fund-raise. it is certainly not an easy task. Well done guys, you are the best. Love Pam x

It's been a nice couple of days, especially for November, after the morning frost it became warm with a bit of nice sunshine. Here at the sanctuary we have been having a switch around. Firstly moving some of the ponies onto their winter grazing via a walk through the park. Later the piggies were moved into their other paddock, although Arffa stays in his. We cannot move the pigs in together as they would fight and cause serious injury if not death.

We have been having a tidy up of the stable yard and land getting ready for the winter. We have laid mud control slabs to help with the dreaded winter mud and making life easier pushing those wheelbarrows and not getting your wellies sucked off leaving muddy soggy socks.. oh joy.. .short days and long dark nights. Here we go again, I just hope it doesn't snow Love Pam x

Our Fab Sanctuary

The H.A.C.K. Horse Sanctuary is a Rescue-Rehabilitation-Education Centre that is dedicated to the welfare of the horse.

Founded in March 1992 by Pamela Bluck it has grown from strength to strength into a successful small charity (no. 1025157). H.A.C.K. are also full welfare members of the National Equine Welfare Council, which means we have been fully inspected and passed the high criteria and standards that are required.

H.A.C.K. is unique in the fact that it is run entirely by volunteers who really are dedicated to the welfare of the horse. H.A.C.K. is fortunate in having Prof Derek Knottenbelt as advisor who has been of great support from the very beginning and also the late Graham Capper, law advisor and supporter, greatly missed.

H.A.C.K. also works within the community in many different ways from educational school visits, care home visits, Duke of Edinburgh awards, Saturday kids etc.
