DOG TRAINING
What does it mean to be consistent?
: marked by harmony, regularity, or steady continuity : free from variation or contradiction..
Being consistent gives a clear understanding β€οΈπ
In dog training if we allow the dog to perform a behaviour like barking at other dogs or noises in the house , surely we are building a foundation behaviour that is practised on a regular basis ? Then why would we punish the dog when it performs the behaviour whilst out on a walk , in the park etc . Here the main problem is INCONSISTENCY which gives the dog mixed messages and creates confusion , anxiety, over arousal. Can the dog comprehend the difference from barking/lunging in the house whilst away from home ? Can we talk to the dogs and advise them ?
NO! So whatβs answer :- manage and control the environment in the house thus not allowing the dog to rehearse the unwanted behaviours ? How ? Well if the dog barks at the window in the lounge when dogs, traffic, people go past . Donβt allow the behaviour to happen. Stop the access to the window when not supervised where you can influence the behaviour and use a method of counter conditioning to change the response ..
The same in agility . If your dog constantly disengages in the ring and runs around not focusing, what are we practising ? Building a behaviour that occurs in that show environment . This probably means the dog is over threshold and not able to do what is required . Is the dog lacking focus due to lack of value ? Have we put the dog in the ring too soon ? Letβs concentrate on building focus just it the training environment, building value and the to the show environment!
Can your dog focus at home with distractions ? Can you dog listen whilst on a walk in the park? Can your dog focus in the car park, in the exercise area , by the ring . If no then itβs time to work on building that focus and engagement trying to prevent the dog rehearsing the u
