Being involved in scentwork training with your dog is not only fun and interesting but heightens your awareness of your dog’s overall wellbeing

Whilst observing your dog working to locate the target scent you are watching your dog more intently than you would do so in normal everyday activities. This can provide you with a powerful insight in being able to recognise if something changes in your dog whether that be displayed physically or psychologically

Prehaps your dog has lost some stamina when searching or they don’t want to reach up to a higher placed hides or crawl under to lower hides when previously they did

Possibly you may see changes in your dogs movement and stiffness in areas of their body.

Changes observed may not always be physical but shown in changes of behaviour, prehaps your dog is not as confident, showing signs of trepidation to search in enclosed areas or a reluctance to search at all. These can be signs of internal pain that requires further investigation

Scentwork not only strengthens a bond between you but also gives you a far deeper understanding of the overall wellbeing of your dog

🐾 The Dog’s Scent Picture 🐾

🐶 Paint by Numbers Analogy 🎨

When our dog's are seeking for the source of an odour they are working through the scent picture provided and collecting points of reference along the way. I see this as being similar to paint by numbers art. In this activity we seek out the number to paint in the colour provided until we complete all the segments

The number we are looking for could become a large part of the overall picture or could just be painting in the tiniest of areas. Without both the painting would not get finished

Dog's gain odour reference points within the search which leads them to source. The information they gather can be thought of as numbers

A particular number may paint many of the areas of the picture offering the dog lots of information to work with. Some reference points may offer only small but still invaluable pieces of information to complete the overall picture

Dogs use their incredible sense of smell combined with their cognitive brain to solve the odour puzzle and complete the scent picture

If science can’t fully understand the intricacies of how a dog assimilates a scent and track it to its source, then how can A.I effectively replicate the dog’s natural super powered abilities.

Technology to date can provide analytics in odour detection but the most efficient processes for deciphering complex odour information happens within very large structures of equipment. Smaller transportable scent detectors are in no way comparable to the versatility and effectiveness a dog provides in operational scent detection

For now our dog’s super powers in scent detection, their cognitive abilities in solving odour puzzles and immense adaptability in different environments is more than a nose a head of the A.I revolution

How does the dog’s nose aid humans?

‘Nose Work’ or ‘Scentwork is a popular dog sport activity for the companion dog owner. 🐕

It originates from operational detection scent work. One dog and one handler form a team where the dog must find a hidden target odour, ignoring distractions and alerting to the handler once the target scent is found. 👏

It is typically practiced by the police, military, custom search dogs, search and rescue more recently medical detection dogs.

Dogs are also trained for conservation work and public health aspects such as detecting bed bugs and dry rot.

Cadaver dogs are trained to search for dead bodies whether through natural disasters, su***de or unlawful happenings and can even detect bodies underwater
