A Cats Protection (Cats Protection) survey showed that over nine out of ten cat owners stated that owning a cat benefited their mental health. But cat owners truly don’t need statistics to tell them that.
Cats bring many great things into our lives, from mischief to joy and companionship. This International Cat Day, let’s celebrate cats and the special bond we have with our feline friends.

How good does it sound to pay a small monthly fee that covers all your pet’s preventative care needs, allowing you to spread these costs across the year?
Our Pet Health Club covers all routine vaccinations, parasite prevention treatments, additional savings on procedures (such as neutering and preventative dental treatments), and advice on dental care, diet, and behaviour.
It’s available for dogs, cats and bunnies, and you can join her: https://www.watkins-tasker-vets.co.uk/pet-health-club.html
Although some dogs are natural swimmers, others will not even like wetting their paws.
If you have a water-loving furry friend at home, keep an eye out for blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) while you’re out and about.
If you see green or turquoise wispy scum in freshwater during the warm summer months, there may be blue-green algae, which can be harmful for your pet.
Here are a few ways to keep your dog safe:
👉 Keep them away from any green algae blooms
👉 Always keep them on a lead near freshwater
👉 Carry bottle of clean water and use it to wash off any scum if your dog has been in the water
We’re always a phone call away if you believe your dog had any contact with these bacteria!
What’s your dog like? If they love the water, please share photos in the comments below!
After recovering from a spay surgery, Ivy (in the photo) is definitely ready for some summer adventures with her humans.
If your summer plans with your pet include a BBQ, here are some tips to make it pet-friendly:
👉 If your dog enjoys stealing some food when no one’s looking, make sure you keep the food out of their reach, especially anything that might be harmful, such as corn on the cob, kebab skewers, alcohol and bones.
👉 Leave the rubbish bin out of reach from any curious pets, too.
👉 Make sure no pets get too near to the grill to avoid any accidental burns.

Do you have a reptile at home in need of a vet consultation? 🤔 We love to treat snakes, geckos, bearded dragons (like Merlin in the photo), tortoises and other species! 🐍🦎🐢
We have plenty of experience and training to deal with exotic species. Two of our vets, Mario and Amy B, are pleased to welcome reptiles into their consulting room. Amy is currently undertaking a Postgraduate Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice. Our RVN, Nicola F, has also completed a certificate in exotic animals.
Our Portishead branch has an exclusive ward for exotic patients, with a dedicated consulting room. If your reptile needs hospitalisation, we have hospital-grade vivariums that can be adjusted to each species' requirements, ensuring they will feel at home, no matter their needs.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of celebrating Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month. 🥳
Your pets’ health and well-being wouldn’t be the same without the compassion, skills and hard work of our registered vet nurses (RVNs), who devote their days to caring for your beloved pets. 🐾
Help us give them the recognition they deserve! If you’ve had a great experience with one of our RVNs, please share in the comments below! 👇
Here at Watkins and Tasker Vets, we understand that no two pets’ health issues are alike! This is why, when you bring your pet to our physiotherapy services, we develop a tailored treatment plan targeting their specific health problems and improving their quality of life.
Check out our video of Alice doing wonderfully in her physiotherapy session. 🥰 Do you have a pet who’s doing physiotherapy with us too? Share their progress in the comments below!
Here at Watkins and Tasker Vets, we are privileged to work with several guide dogs, and today we’re celebrating these amazing heroes. 👏
Guide dogs help people who need assistance to live a more independent and confident life.
If you’d like to support this cause, you can donate to or volunteer for an organisation that trains assistance dogs. You can also become a foster family during their training period, or adopt them after they’ve retired or if their training was not successful.
Do you know any organisations that train guide dogs? Give them a shout-out in the comments below! 👇
Priya (in the photo) is here to wish you a Happy Easter and to remind you that some of the treats that we like to have in our homes during this time of the year can be dangerous for pets.
Don’t forget to keep your pets away from:
🍬 Sweets with xylitol, which can cause pancreatic damage in dogs
🍫 Chocolate or treats with cocoa, as these contain theobromine, which is toxic for pets
🍇 Baked goods with raisins, sultanas or grapes, as they can cause kidney damage
We hope you enjoy the Easter break with your family and pets, and we are here for you in case of emergency.
Do you own or are you considering owning a flock of chickens? 🐔 Chickens make great pets for any family, while also rewarding you with delicious free-range eggs! 🥚
However, there are a few things you need to be mindful of when caring for chickens, such as:
👉 Chickens are social flock animals. Keep groups of at least three hens, ideally more
👉 If you own a cockerel, he will need around 10 females to keep him company
👉 If you’ve got more than one cockerel, they should not be kept together
👉 Offering them a balanced diet, which is suited for their breed and age, and access to fresh water
👉 Providing them with an outdoor space to explore and an indoor area for safety
👉 Getting them some interactive toys for environmental enrichment
👉 Get in touch with us right away if you spot anything wrong with your chickens
Do you have your own flock? What else would you add? Tell us in the comments below!

Did you know that rabbits' teeth grow continuously throughout their lives? This means they require a diet of about 85% grass or hay to keep their teeth from overgrowing, as it naturally wears them down.
However, regular dental checks are still essential, as well as paying attention to signs that could indicate mouth pain, such as:
👉 Decreased food intake and weight loss
👉 Decreased grooming
👉 Abnormal behaviours
Dental issues in rabbits are common and can quickly evolve into serious problems, such as gut disease due to not eating, so don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns about your bunny's dental health!
We have specialised rabbit and rodent dental equipment at all our branches and are highly experienced in dealing with bunnies, like lovely Poppy (in the photo).
