This year's theme for is 'Happy, Hoppy Homes', highlighting the importance of creating a home that lets them thrive!

The minimum recommended enclosure size is 3M x 2M x 1M (LxWxH). Your rabbits' setup should allow enough room for at least 3 hops and space to stretch fully upright. A proper setup will include separate areas for feeding, resting, and exercise.

Pet rabbits should have permanent access to:
✔️ A secure shelter for resting
✔️ A safe, enriched space to explore, play, and express natural behaviours

It's Rabbit Awareness Week! 🐇

Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet in the UK, however they are also the most likely to be misunderstood and their complex needs overlooked. Many rabbits often suffer from preventable health issues due to misinformation or lack of awareness.

They are often seen as low-maintenance starter pets, but they are far from this, for a rabbit to thrive they require:
🏠 Spacious housing with room to hop, stretch and explore
🧼 Fresh water, hay and bedding each day, with their homes cleaned regularly
🩺 Regular vet checkups and vaccinations
🥦 A proper, balanced diet consisting of: 85% hay, 10% fresh greens and 5% nuggets
🐇 Companionship - rabbits should be housed in bonded pairs
🧠 Daily mental stimulation

We hope this week helps to raise more awareness about the health and wellbeing of rabbits and what they require to live a happy and fulfilled life!

☀ With the warm weather forecast we would like to remind you all to take extra care with your pets over the next few days!

🌡 We would advise, where possible, walking your dog during cooler periods of the day, and avoiding rigorous exercise during peak times.

🚙 Please also avoid leaving your pets in cars as the temperature inside vehicles can rise dramatically in a short amount of time!

🐱 For outdoor cats, we recommend using a pet-safe sunscream on exposed parts of skin, such as the tips of their ears and on their noses. This is especially important if your cat has white or light-coloured fur as they are more vulnerable to getting burnt. We recommend using an SPF 30 or higher for maximum coverage!

⚠ Please remember to take extra care if your pet suffers from an underlying health condition, or is an older or flat-faced breed, as these animals are unfortunately more susceptible to heatstroke.

❤ We hope you all have a lovely time enjoying this nice weather! As always, if you do need us, please give us call and we will be happy to help!

⚠🌞 With temperatures expected to rise, we please urge you to help keep your pets safe in the heat! 🌞⚠

If it's too hot for your hands or bare feet, then it's too hot for their paws! 🐶

If you do need to take your dog out for a walk, we recommend going out early in the morning or later on in the evening when the temperature is cooler. This will reduce the risk of heatstroke and burning their paws on the pavement. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt. 🐾

Please remember to take extra care with young puppies, older dogs and brachycephalic breeds, as they are at extra risk in the hot weather! ⚠️

We hope you all enjoy the heat, and please remember to stay safe! ❤🐾

Did you know that pets can suffer from pollen allergies just like humans?

🌼 Summer days can bring about high pollen counts, which can mean irritation for not only humans, but for pets as well. While the cause of the allergies is the same, the signs can be a little different.

Here are some of the signs that pets may show:
🐾 Licking or chewing at the paws
🐾 Excessive scratching
🐾 Itchy, watery eyes
🐾 Redness of the skin, especially around the eyes, ears and in between the paws
🐾 Head shaking
🐾 Hair loss
🐾 Sneezing or reverse sneezing

If you notice your pet showing any of the above signs, particularly during the summer months, we would recommend making an appointment with one of our vets to discuss 🩺

❗ Please do not attempt to treat pollen allergies on your own, always seek veterinary advice first before giving your pet a new medication ❗

We would like you all to join us in wishing our wonderful Maxine a Happy Retirement! 🍾🥂

Sadly, tomorrow is Max’s last day at Tweed before she will be heading off to celebrate her well-earned retirement ☹️

Over the (many, many, many) years we know lots of you have had the opportunity to get to know and love Max as much as we do! Which is why we would like to give you the opportunity to join us in saying a final farewell. She will be working at our Yeadon branch until 2:30pm tomorrow if anyone would like to pop in to say goodbye!

Max, it’s been a pleasure. We wish you all the love and happiness in the world for your new adventures! Tweed won’t be the same without you ❤️

As Hedgehog Awareness Week comes to an end we would like to share some signs to look out for that show a hedgehog is in need of help:

❗️Obvious injuries
❗️Lethargy
❗️Flies surrounding the hedgehog
❗️Trapped in something
❗️Wobbling when walking
❗️Hoglets without an adult

There are some great Hedgehog Rescues about that are doing a wonderful job helping our little friends. Please, if you do find a hedgehog in need of help, contact us (or your local vets) or a local rescue who will be happy to assist! 🦔

Did you know that rough estimates put the current hedgehog population in England, Wales and Scotland at less than one million, compared with a staggering 30 million in the 1950s!

Some of the reasons for this decline are:

🦔 Loss of hedgerows and field margins.

🦔 Loss of habitat in urban areas due to housing developments, car parks, etc.

🦔 New roads, fences and walls carve up suitable habitat and sometimes isolate populations which in turn prevents breeding.

🦔 Lack of wild areas means a lack of bugs resulting in a lack of suitable food sources. This is often a result of ‘over-tidy’ gardens.

🦔 With more cars on the roads than ever before, roadkill is a big problem.

🦔 Use of pesticides and slug pellers can poison hedgehogs and also kill the bugs that they eat.

🦔 Hedgehog Awareness Week 🦔

Hedgehog Awareness Week, an annual campaign organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS), aims to highlight the problems hedgehogs face and how to help protect them.

This year the theme is “Give hedgehogs the edge!”, emphasising the importance of creating wildlife-friendly spaces, particularly around the edges of gardens and green spaces.

Why not try these wildlife-friendly ways to give hedgehogs the edge:
🦔 Create a “wild corner”
🦔 Add hedgehog highways
🦔 Make ponds safe
🦔 Look out for litter
🦔 Leave shallow bowls of water out
🦔 Avoid using poisons and pesticides
🦔 Be careful of netting

☀ With the warm weather forecast we would like to remind you all to take extra care with your pets over the next few days!

🌡 Although we may not be experiencing extreme temperatures, it can still be hot enough to put your pet at risk. We would advise, where possible, walking your dog during cooler periods of the day, and avoiding rigorous exercise during peak times.

❤ Most importantly, we hope you all have a lovely time enjoying this nice weather! As always, if you do need us, please give us call and we will be happy to help!
