It's set to be a hot one today β˜€

Temperatures of 30 degrees celsius outside can cause a car’s interior to soar above 55 degrees.

Even for short stops, don't leave your dog in the car.

If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, dial 999 immediately πŸ“ž

What makes a good rabbit diet?

βœ”οΈ HAY - this should make up 85-90% of your rabbit's diet
βœ”οΈ FRESH GREENS - 10% of diet
βœ”οΈ NUGGETS - 5% of diet
βœ”οΈ SNACKS - to be given in moderation
βœ”οΈ FRESH WATER - should be provided at all times

We would recommend avoiding muesli-style diets as these types of diet can encourage selective feeding, which increases the risk of the following problems:
❌ dental disease
❌ gut stasis and other digestive problems
❌ fly strike
❌ reduced fibre intake
❌ reduced water intake

Selective feeding occurs when rabbits choose some components of the muesli diet in preference to others. Rabbits will naturally select the higher energy (high sugar or starch elements) and reject the pellets. This results in an unbalanced diet as the pellets are often supplemented with minerals and vitamins as well as often being high in fibre.

𝐒 𝐓 𝐎 𝐏 ! Spot the signs of gut stasis...

Gut stasis is one of the most common problems we see in rabbits. It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in rabbits where the normal movement of food through the digestive system slows down or stops. This can lead to a dangerous buildup of gas and bacteria in the intestines.

Gut stasis can be caused by several factors including low-fibre diets, pain, stress and dehydration. It is important to recognise the symptoms and seek immediate veterinary care if you spot any of the below signs:

𝐒 - slowed or absent faecal output
𝐓 - tense abdomen, pain or bloating
𝐎 - off their food, reluctance to eat
𝐏 - posture changes

What to do if you suspect gut stasis:
βœ” Seek immediate veterinary care
βœ” Provide fresh water and hay
βœ” Do not force-feed
βœ” Monitor your rabbit closely

Did you know...

πŸ‡ Rabbits can live for around 8-12 years, requiring the same commitment as a dog or cat would do
πŸ‡ Like dogs and cats, rabbits also require annual vaccinations and we advise neutering
πŸ‡ Rabbits should live in bonded pairs to provide companionship
πŸ‡ While pet rabbits are inexpensive to buy, caring for them can be pricey
πŸ‡ Rabbits' accomodation should be cleaned daily and provided with fresh water, hay and bedding
πŸ‡ 'A Hutch is Not Enough' - Rabbits need enough space to exercise and roam freely, with a minimum space of 3Mx2Mx1M

This year's theme for is 'Happy, Hoppy Homes', highlighting the importance of creating a home that lets them thrive!

The minimum recommended enclosure size is 3M x 2M x 1M (LxWxH). Your rabbits' setup should allow enough room for at least 3 hops and space to stretch fully upright. A proper setup will include separate areas for feeding, resting, and exercise.

Pet rabbits should have permanent access to:
βœ”οΈ A secure shelter for resting
βœ”οΈ A safe, enriched space to explore, play, and express natural behaviours

It's Rabbit Awareness Week! πŸ‡

Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet in the UK, however they are also the most likely to be misunderstood and their complex needs overlooked. Many rabbits often suffer from preventable health issues due to misinformation or lack of awareness.

They are often seen as low-maintenance starter pets, but they are far from this, for a rabbit to thrive they require:
🏠 Spacious housing with room to hop, stretch and explore
🧼 Fresh water, hay and bedding each day, with their homes cleaned regularly
🩺 Regular vet checkups and vaccinations
πŸ₯¦ A proper, balanced diet consisting of: 85% hay, 10% fresh greens and 5% nuggets
πŸ‡ Companionship - rabbits should be housed in bonded pairs
🧠 Daily mental stimulation

We hope this week helps to raise more awareness about the health and wellbeing of rabbits and what they require to live a happy and fulfilled life!

β˜€ With the warm weather forecast we would like to remind you all to take extra care with your pets over the next few days!

🌑 We would advise, where possible, walking your dog during cooler periods of the day, and avoiding rigorous exercise during peak times.

πŸš™ Please also avoid leaving your pets in cars as the temperature inside vehicles can rise dramatically in a short amount of time!

🐱 For outdoor cats, we recommend using a pet-safe sunscream on exposed parts of skin, such as the tips of their ears and on their noses. This is especially important if your cat has white or light-coloured fur as they are more vulnerable to getting burnt. We recommend using an SPF 30 or higher for maximum coverage!

⚠ Please remember to take extra care if your pet suffers from an underlying health condition, or is an older or flat-faced breed, as these animals are unfortunately more susceptible to heatstroke.

❀ We hope you all have a lovely time enjoying this nice weather! As always, if you do need us, please give us call and we will be happy to help!

⚠🌞 With temperatures expected to rise, we please urge you to help keep your pets safe in the heat! 🌞⚠

If it's too hot for your hands or bare feet, then it's too hot for their paws! 🐢

If you do need to take your dog out for a walk, we recommend going out early in the morning or later on in the evening when the temperature is cooler. This will reduce the risk of heatstroke and burning their paws on the pavement. If you can't safely exercise your dog, missing a day won't hurt. 🐾

Please remember to take extra care with young puppies, older dogs and brachycephalic breeds, as they are at extra risk in the hot weather! ⚠️

We hope you all enjoy the heat, and please remember to stay safe! ❀🐾

Did you know that pets can suffer from pollen allergies just like humans?

🌼 Summer days can bring about high pollen counts, which can mean irritation for not only humans, but for pets as well. While the cause of the allergies is the same, the signs can be a little different.

Here are some of the signs that pets may show:
🐾 Licking or chewing at the paws
🐾 Excessive scratching
🐾 Itchy, watery eyes
🐾 Redness of the skin, especially around the eyes, ears and in between the paws
🐾 Head shaking
🐾 Hair loss
🐾 Sneezing or reverse sneezing

If you notice your pet showing any of the above signs, particularly during the summer months, we would recommend making an appointment with one of our vets to discuss 🩺

❗ Please do not attempt to treat pollen allergies on your own, always seek veterinary advice first before giving your pet a new medication ❗

We would like you all to join us in wishing our wonderful Maxine a Happy Retirement! 🍾πŸ₯‚

Sadly, tomorrow is Max’s last day at Tweed before she will be heading off to celebrate her well-earned retirement ☹️

Over the (many, many, many) years we know lots of you have had the opportunity to get to know and love Max as much as we do! Which is why we would like to give you the opportunity to join us in saying a final farewell. She will be working at our Yeadon branch until 2:30pm tomorrow if anyone would like to pop in to say goodbye!

Max, it’s been a pleasure. We wish you all the love and happiness in the world for your new adventures! Tweed won’t be the same without you ❀️
