RELAX!!! It’s not what you think 👍🏻👍🏻

With Spring nearly over and Summer just around the corner you may have seen tiny little spots on some of your Goldfish’s heads??

The first thing that springs to mind for a lot of fish keepers is often whitespot, a parasite.

However, this time of year it’s more likely to be harmless breeding tubercles that males develop when they are ready to breed. These white lumps often appear on the head, gills, and flanks of the pectoral fins. They will disappear when the breeding season is over usually by mid August.

You may also be surprised to learn that a lot of aquarium fish also can develop breeding tubercles. Male members of the cyprinid family which Goldfish belong to all develop these small white lumps when ready to breed. This includes most barbs, sharks and some loaches 👍🏻👍🏻

Next time you see white bumps on your fishies head, gills and pectoral fins, don’t assume your fish are ill. They might be feeling quite the opposite 😉
