About the rescue
This rescue of our native European hedgehog was set up in 2017 to help the local wild hedgehog population. The rescue was built in 2017 and completed in 2018 with a purpose built insulated shed. There are six built in units within the hospital area with heat pads in addition to heating of the ambient air. Cupboard units where purchased second hand and are white with easy clean surfaces for hygiene. Hedgehogs are admitted from the local area and also the veterinary practice who work with and support Stillingfleet Hedgehog Rescue.
The age of hedgehogs most commonly admitted are from around six weeks of age from around the weight of 96grams. They are life threateningly ill with parasite burdens and sometimes injuries and would not survive without treatment and rehabilitation back into the wild. Most of their conditions are infectious through direct contact so hygiene is paramount between them and also as protection for the carer when treating them. This requires medical supplies such as specific disinfectant, gloves for handling, cleaning the units and treatments, syringes, needles, paper rolls, general disinfectant for dishes, microscope slides, cover slides.
Food is a large part of the costs second only to medical supplies. As an estimation on average it cost about £5 per week to feed each hedgehog. An average stay at the rescue is 6 to 8 weeks depending on treatment needed. It can be less time than this or it can be much longer but this is less common.
There is a fuel cost too as rescue work does involve quite a bit of driving around to and from Vets, people locally who have found a hedgehog that needs help and taking hedgehogs for release. Part of rescue work is education that involves travelling and delivering talks or running events.
