York's Gemma was called to a cow with calving difficulty, and it's no wonder, as she was trying to deliver a Schistosomus Reflexus calf.

This is a poorly understood condition, which usually manifests as an 'inside out' animal with a twisted spine. The cause is likely a genetic abnormality, which cannot be predicted or prevented. The calf did not, thankfully, suffer due to Gemma's swift action.

Ewe health is essential for smooth lamb rearing - take care of her, and she'll take care of the rest. Fluid therapy and pain relief are the mainstays of ewe recovery post partum, even if she isn't looking under the weather just yet.

An unusual case - poor, lovely Gilbert (who is incidentally the most well behaved goose we have ever met) had a long standing eye problem that was causing him much discumfort. Alongside his dedicated owners, we decided ultimately that he would be out of pain with the eye removed, so Ami removed it at the Coalyard Clinic. We wish Gilbert a smooth recovery.

Let's focus on having the best start to all new lives on the farm this lambing season - have you got adequate colostrum stocks?

Make sure that if you are using a replacer, that it meets the needs of a newborn lamb. You can also harvest and freeze colostrum off high producing ewes where you have measured the quality of their colostrum.

Lambing is on the horizon and don’t let Twin Lamb Disease knock your flock, prompt treatment with glucose precursors and calcium are essential for rapid recovery and minimal losses.

A Bluetonge Virus Meeting has been arranged by AHDB for this evening at 6.30 at the Village Hotel, Henry Boot Way, Priory Way, Hull, Kingston upon Hull, HU4 7DY.

You will be able to hear from a panel of experts who will provide an update on bluetongue virus and the current BTV-3 strain that has been confirmed in East Yorkshire.

Some of you may already be aware that the Restriction Zone has been extended to include the whole of the East Riding of Yorkshire area. Ruminants cannot be moved out of this area without license.

Further information regarding movement restrictions, licenses required for movement (including to slaughter) and licenses over vaccination are available on the government website.

‼️🚛Medication/vaccine orders🚛‼️

🚛Our delivery time from our supplier has recently changed due to an overhaul of their delivery routes, our slot is now in the afternoon as we are at the end of the delivery schedule.

⏰We kindly ask our clients to understand that medicine and vaccine orders may sometimes take up to 48 hours to be processed due to our reception team working to field emergency calls and serve clients at the practice.

💉We’ll do our best to process your orders as soon as possible however, please bear in mind the lead time on delivery of products to the practice

This year Westpoint York has started working with UCLan Veterinary Medicine as an Intra Mural Rotations clinical partner, as of February this year we have started taking on vet students from their 1st year at university. The same students will return to us each year, and we can’t wait to see their skills and knowledge develop over their degree journey.

One of our vets, Gemma, recently went for a tour of the vet school clinical facilities and to do some training. She was really impressed by the quality of the equipment and the thought that had gone into creating the best learning environment possible, it was also a big throwback to her years at university!
