Tuesdays are to talk about... Conservation 🌿- Every Tuesday we are going to be bringing you a snippet of our conservation highlights!

This week we are highlighting our White Lip Tamarins who are part of an EEP ( Ex situ programme) which aims to conserve healthy species populations. They are also known as the Red Bellied Tamarin, as you can see from their remarkable characteristics.

White Lipped Tamarins play a vital role in the rainforest as seed dispersers for a number of fruit trees -Their main threat is due to habitat loss, we must work together to protect this vital species.

Leonie and Fella are now proud parents of a baby which is doing really well! A success for the species. Did you know that in 2022 you helped us to support The World Land Trust Operation Ocelot. This initiative is designed to preserve areas that are not already protected in the Atlantic Rainforest. We managed to protect an area of forest the size of our Wildlife Park which could be home to White Lip Tamarins in the Wild! 🐒

We still haven't named the baby Tamarin. Got a name suggestion? tell us about it!

When you think of Tuesday a word beginning with C comes to mind...................

That's right its Conservation 😉😅! Every Tuesday we are going to be bringing you a snippet of our conservation news!

🐌🐌🐌🐌 Do you remember last year we moved in 12 Critically Endagered Glutinous Snails?

Found in only one place in the whole of the UK, we are on a mission to bring this species back from the brink and back to England where it was once found. These were the first Glutinous Snails back in England for over 100 years!

So what is our news? We have successfully bred the snails over the summer but this picture is the first recorded image of mating in Glutinous Snails!!!! Amazing! Zoom in and excuse the algae (its what they like to eat)

Well done to our wonderful LVI Team for their dedication to our native species 💚

💚❤️ Practical Learning ❤️💚

Our students have access to incredible facilities across site including our Wildlife & Conservation Park. This last term alone on the Heritage Farm, students have been getting to grips with some of our farm animals. Including exercising, weighing, foot care and even watching eye surgery for one of our alpaca Hugo, by our fabulous vets from WestPoint. 🦙🐑

Storm Eowyn Update 💨💨💨

Yesterday the Wildlife Park sustained some damage in the storm including a power cut! We are still without power this morning.
We have a generator which has ensured our life support systems for our animals are running, huge thanks to our wonderful friends at John Wrights Electricals. However we do not have power to none essential to life facilities.

This does mean we will remain closed today so our staff can focus on the welfare of our animals. If you have a booking we will be in touch this morning. The college open day is still OPEN and will be held at the rest of the site which still fortunately has power.

We hope to be open tomorrow if the power grid get to our line as hoped by the end of today. Many thanks for your support.

Integral members of our Wildlife Park team, Lauren & Luke, who are leading our Tansy Beetle Conservation Project, attended Parliament yesterday as MP’s delegated and voted for the winner of Great British Wildlife Restoration Projects 👏

It great to see so many unique and brilliant Native Species Projects being started and fulfilled by Zoos, Aquariums and Wildlife Parks around Great Britain 👍🐾🌲🪲🦫🪳🐸🦌

❤️💚Heritage Conservation Farm💚❤️

Over the weekend Farm Keepers Kelly & Declan completed their routine health checks on our Devon & Cornwall Longwool pair 🐑🐑

Did you know that they’re known for their massive fleeces! It’s often said they’ll produce more wool per sheep than any other British breed 🧶

Have you made it down to our new farm and introduced yourself to our new flocks!🐑

Learning to Protect Nature

Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park is based at Askham Bryan College, York. The park is part of the college Animal Management Unit - it’s there to support students to become the next generation of conservationists, zookeepers and animal welfare specialists of the future. The park is open to the public weekends and holidays, when staff and students share their love of nature with our visitors.
