TIPS ON HOW TO HELP REDUCE GROOM INDUCED STRESS 🐾🖤🙏🏻

Touching and massaging sensitive areas – For many dogs, grooming can be a stressful experience because it requires touching sensitive areas on their body, including their paws, groin, rear, belly, and ears.

* Desensitizing your pet to grooming sounds – Desensitization is an effective technique for treating animal anxiety. For grooming, this can involve running nail clippers or a blow dryer next to the pet in short intervals and rewarding them with a treat afterwards. With repeated practice, the pet will adjust to these once-terrifying sounds and learn that they’re nothing to fear.
* Simulating the experience at home – When dogs aren’t familiar with being groomed, the steps involved can be startling. For instance, some dogs become anxious when they’re lifted onto the grooming table. To help ease this anxiety, owners can practice lifting their pups onto a raised surface at home and brushing them or massaging them from that height.
* Creating positive grooming associations – To maintain their pet’s appearance in between grooming sessions, owners should take the time to brush their furry family members. This also provides an opportunity to build positive grooming associations. While brushing, owners should feed their pup treats and give them praise in an excited, upbeat tone of voice.
* Taking a long walk – Before any grooming session, owners should take their four-legged friends on a long walk to release any excess energy. That way, when it comes time for grooming, clients are relaxed and ready to enjoy some well-deserved pampering

Common reasons for pet grooming anxiety include:

* Being handled or touched in sensitive areas – For pets who are anxious about being touched in sensitive areas, practicing gentle touching and massage will prove the most beneficial method of training.
* Experiencing trauma in the past – Rescue dogs are often victims of past trauma. In order to overcome anxiety, owners should focus on positive reinforcement training.
* Experiencing pain due to an underlying condition – Grooming anxiety may be caused by experiencing excess pain while being touched or handled. This could be a sign of an underlying medical condition, such as arthritis. To rule out this possibility, owners should take their pet to the vet for a thorough examination.

Transparency post ⭐️

Not all grooming sessions go to plan ..
and today this gentle boy Rex is my example of stress overload, overwhelmed, anxiety, and fear
Rex now lives with his ever so loving family 🥰 who 💯 have his best interests at heart, but prior to this he has a history no one will ever know the full extent of. Today we have taken his groom at a slow pace - but this was still too much for Rex at times,

While humans find pampering relaxing & spa days luxurious, unfortunately for dogs this is sometimes far from the reality, Rex has had a part deshed of his fluffy undercoat.. and a bath shampooing him twice in a lavender & chamomile shampoo- I managed to trim some of his feathers on his spaniel x corgi fur .
Rex’s lovely Owner came back to help with the drying stage of Rex’s groom - we then witnessed his full extent of stress and we called it a day, no amount of personal preference, or aesthetically pleasing appearance is worth putting a very stressed pet through an entire groom 🥰

Together Rex’s owner and myself have decided Rex needs some gentle encouragement along with desensitising for me to gain his trust and him to feel comfortable ❤️ photos of Rex before his groom along with this post are

Baby Ozzy
Such a beautiful boy 🩵 today Ozzy has has had his 2nd groom
2 x bath with lavender & chamomile shampoo
We’ve used lavender detangle spray
A gentle dry without a powerful nozzle
Ozzy has had his face shaped
Paws tidied and paw pads clipped out
Sanitary areas tidied
He’s had his legs & tail and ears all shaped and his puppy fur on his body tided - going home smelling beautiful of baby fresh cologne 🩵🤍

And blow out of all (most of prinnys undercoat) we trimmed her edges and tidied her fluffy bottom 💓💓

His legs tidied all the way back
His paw pads clipped out
Ears trimmed and fur thinned out

Ozzy - the Cockerpoo 🐾
Had a a conditioning treatment to relax these curls- and so that we could work through any knots,
A double bath with mother fluffer shampoo!
Lots of detangling spray and we got to work -
Areas of Ozzy were clipped shorter due to some matting on his legs and feet - but overall his body & face were fine to work with .. This happy little chap has done absolutely amazing today 🤩
