It’s been a wildlife week at Galtres this week. In addition to this orphaned fawn that vet Emily found when on visits this morning on the road, we have had a buzzard after a car accident who sadly didn’t make it, and a red kite that is still in with us receiving treatment. That is in addition to the litter of kittens and mother cat we have for rehoming. We are so grateful for the help of people like Whitby Wildlife for helping us today, it was a fair drive to get fawn dropped off but so worth it to see him comfy.
We have had 65 rescue calls today including for this fawn. Found on the road and taken to Galtres Vets where they administered pain medication and IV fluids. It's suspected that he was clipped by a car and has some scuff marks to his head. He is currently temporarily blinded (which is common in deer after undergoing high levels of stress). Vision will likely return in a few days. Galtres Vets very kindly transported the deer to us too which was hugely appreciated.
When you call us with a rescue needing help... We politely request patience! Our rescue and transport team are all VOLUNTEERS. Meaning, when you can't transport, our volunteers will respond and do their upmost to fit in these transport jobs when they can ... between work, children and their home lives.
So please be mindful of this. Please respect that we will always try to help BUT we can't guarantee anything.
Please also be aware that your rescue isn't the only one we'll be trying to help. Some volunteers may be driving from town to town collecting numerous rescues - all in their own time, using their own fuel.
We will therefore always ask if you can transport the animal yourself. And if unable to yourselves, genuinely, to see if you have a friend, a family member or a neighbour that could.
It can be very disheartening for us when a volunteer will have gone out of their way to collect an animal, only to find that the caller has a vehicle and was capable of transporting themselves. It's also very disheartening for us to have attempted to find help and only when patience has worn thin, do callers then admit they can transport themselves.
When you come across a rescue , it is once in a blue moon. But for us it is all day every day. Please make our lives a little bit easier. Thank you
