This video does not belong to us or the page it is being shared from but it highlights exactly how “good dogs turn bad”.

There is nothing bad about this dog’s behaviour or actions here, as bad as I feel for the child, children should be taught be ADULTS that dogs are not toys and playthings. The dog here is being held in place by an adult present.

We are a dogs guardian and should be giving their actions a voice where they cannot. It is on us to do better and to read the very clear signals and to communicate for the dogs. As well as teaching children good dog etiquette. And to have enough sense to not put dogs in positions like this for some social media likes!

What is most sad about this situation is if you watch the lead up to the warning bite this dogs body language and signals were literally SCREAMING “please stop and let me leave”. But he was ignored! Dog knows what happened to the poor dog after this event. I can only hope he wasn’t further punished for using the only communication tool he had left!

Yet family dogs that “turn bad” are the ones to suffer. The old nonsense about “once they’ve bitten or tasted blood” comes out and the dog usually pays with their life!

I still think owning a dog should come with some form of test like driving a car! A dog theory test if you will!

What do you think? Let me know!

🗣️Dog Body Language Matters! 🗣️

I know people think this is “just a bit of fun” but watch the dogs body language at the start. Poor Winnie is confused, unsure and uncomfortable about this bit of “human fun”.

Sure Winnie runs off and “understands the assignment” after the clapping bit, but this is the problem with social media and people creating content like this for all to see and it becomes normalised.

People fail to see or read a dogs communication. Communication is more than growling, vocalising or teeth baring. It often starts very subtle before it eventually escalates in the moment or with a build up over time.

The dog is shifting her gaze with her eyes darting and displaying whale eye, she is also showing signs of discomfort by trying to avoid the dog pats and ducking, she’s licking her lips, her ears are pinned back (hard to sometimes see or tell on a curly/longer coat and floppy eared dog but if you watch you’ll see it) and her tail/back end is tucked. In short this dog is screaming with her body language “please stop this is freaking me out”.

The public could all do with learning basic dog communication and body language for their own safety. If the recent UK bans on XL bully’s haven’t shown this I don’t know what will! These dogs aren’t monsters that woke up one day and chose violence. I don’t know how many social media posts I’ve seen with children climbing on them and the dogs body language screaming “somebody stop this”, couple that with most peoples opinion that dog training is dominance based and dogs emotions and behaviour being suppressed leads to powder keg situations that has become the norm almost. It happens in other breeds too but often not with the cataclysmic results from a dog as powerful as an XL Bully.

It’s sad to see an entire breed of dog being vilified because people fail to read dog body language or implement safeguarding for their dogs.
