There has been lots of talk about the overuse of unnecessary parasite treatment, and the environmental impact this has. We aim to strike a fair balance between preventing pets getting parasites we have lots of (like fleas and ticks) while considering their lifestyle and risk factors. Once you buy a product you will get reminders when the next one is due, you can always discuss with us if you feel things have changed and would rather reassess.
For example, a cat who hunts outside is very likely to get worms and fleas, where a “handbag dog” who refuses to walk near grass probably isn't!

Our next animal health talk will be 25th September!
Please let us know by email, RSVPing to the event https://www.facebook.com/share/rhNZ6EvBxihXCvG9/ or in the clinic if you would like to attend and which topics you are interested in so we can make sure you don't miss out!

Due to an unfortunate increase in the number of "no shows" where people (and pets!) do not arrive for their appointments, we are introducing a fee for this failure to arrive.

While we understand things get forgotten when life is busy, not letting us know you cannot attend an appointment in advance takes treatment time away from other pets, which may mean a delay in rebooking your appointment to a later time or date due to how busy the veterinary nurses in the clinic are.
This is not a change we are happy to make but feel it has become necessary.

Did you know we have our own blood machines? We can take bloods from your pet, get the results quickly and discuss them with the vet in Guernsey to get result information easily.
This means we can assess hydration, infection, kidney and liver function as well as specific conditions like thyroid disease, cushings and diabetes.

Pet of the month!
We couldn't choose just one pet in July so here's two:
Freddie went to the UK for a referral after he had symptoms of spinal pain / nerve damage, thankfully after some investigations he's doing ever so much better, and was the goodest little boy for his laser sessions which help to reduce inflammation and pain, while encouraging healing.
Lars the cutie had a dental clean and couple of lumps removed, he was super brave about it and is doing fabulously!

Beware the grass seeds!
Please check your dogs feet while the grass is in seed, this horrid little bunch of seeds had impaled between a sweet dogs toes and had to be removed today leaving rather a hole!
Thankfully a much more comfortable pup after we had gotten rid of it though

There are thousands of pet foods to choose from - it's so confusing!!
What's great is that our nurses can recommend foods suitable for your pet according to their age and health concerns (if any).
Overall:
Wet food can be more appetising, your pet gets some hydration from this food, but it often leads to dental disease
Dry food is easier to store long term, reduces the amount of dental disease (if they chew it), but can mean they need to drink more to stay hydrated.
Raw food or homemade diets can be very appetising, but can be expensive, carry infection risk from things like salmonella, and can be difficult to manage the amount of vitamins, minerals, fibre and carbohydrates your pet needs to stay healthy.

Be very careful of sneaky campaigns! Manufacturers use terms like “whole meat” and “human grade”, but these do not always mean what they appear to, and do not indicate a higher quality of food. If in doubt, ask us to check it out with you!

Thank you to all our visitors who came to the AAWS open afternoon.
Sorry if you had a bit of a wait but we were overwhelmed with the support, interest and kindness of our visitors and so many people asking so many relevant questions.

Congratulations to our art competition winners, thank you Sure and Cycle and Surf for sponsorship.

But most of all thank you to the staff who set it all up and gave up their days off to show everyone around, the committee members for helping organise and fundraise, our music man Vaughan, Hilary for running a raffle, Claire for the beautiful gardens and floral tub displays, and PJs for supplying hot dogs and refreshments.
What an afternoon …………all your donations and pledges will be used carefully for our next new expansion plan.

Vet nurses go through years of training to be suitably prepared to take care of your pets. They learn everything from radiography, blood work, organ diseases, nutrition, surgery, medicines and behaviour - and this is for a whole range of species from dogs and cats to rabbits, reptiles and wildlife!
Our vet nurses work closely with the vet to ensure we can appropriately ensure your pet gets the right advice, treatment and care no matter what the conditions. There will always be the odd thing we don't know (we are human after all) but we will do everything we can to find the right answer for you and your animals.

As next week is Alderney week the clinic will be open for urgent appointments other than Monday for Cavalcade day when the clinic will be closed.
As always if the clinic is closed and an animal needs our care urgently or in an emergency, please call the out of hours number.
Also, please give at least 48hours (ideally 5-7 days) notice when requesting any medications, we often work solo on Saturdays so medications cannot always be made up the same morning at the weekend, and some medications or foods need to be ordered in especially.
We hope everyone has been loving the sunshine, while pets stay cool!

As your pets get older does your cat struggle to groom themselves, or your dog gets out of bed slowly?
Symptoms of old age come to pets at different stages depending on their health, other conditions and size, for moggies and terriers this might not be until after they are 12 years old, for larger cats like Main C**n or heavier dogs like Labradors this might be around 9 years old.
Pets get arthritis and joint pain just like people, but there is lots we can do to help!
Joint supplements act like lubricants so knees, elbows and hips move more comfortably, and some amazing drugs can help even stop arthritis progressing! There are also a huge range of pain relief medications available to ensure your pet enjoys their senior years, some of these are tablets and others are injections, ask us what might be suitable for your pet, especially if they have changed behaviour recently.

Dogs can experience periods of fearfulness or anxiety much like people. This can be transient around an event, like moving house, a new baby, the bereavement of an owner, or rehoming. Or it can be apparently without cause.
There are lots of calming medications available for pets, and they have a variety of effects, which depends on the pet too. Some are best for short term use, while others can be given long term, and some have no side effects at all.
The best way to use anti-anxiety medications is alongside reward based training, as when they feel happy and content, they are more likely to learn from training sessions instead of panicking or feeling overwhelmed.

This is Freddie, Freddie is our "Pet Superstar of the month" for June, he came into the clinic with sudden injury to his liver and was incredibly poorly, so he needed to stay in the clinic for a while to help his body recover. He is absolutely full of character, and thankfully after his stay with us getting lots of cuddles, meds and TLC he was able to go home last week to go back to his usual crazy antics with his family.
While Freddie still has ongoing treatment he needs, we are absolutely over the moon when the hard work, diligence and care we put into treating the islands animal's pays off, and we see your pets getting back to their usual antics (although not too much mischief please Freddie!)

15/07/2024

Due to the bank holiday tomorrow the clinic will be CLOSED on Tuesday.
We will reopen as normal on Wednesday morning and as always for any urgent or emergency medical care for your pets please contact us on the out of hours mobile.

12/07/2024

Heatstroke can quickly be fatal, it happens to pets when the body gets so warm, the normal methods of cooling like sweating or panting no longer work. Unlike humans, dogs and cats only sweat through their paws, so to actively imitate sweating you can spray your dog with cold or cool water and allow this to evaporate. Do not apply wet towels as these trap in warm air, unless they are changed regularly.
For panting and sweating to work, your pet also needs to stay hydrated, so ensure they drink plenty; chilled or frozen yoghurt, home made broth, veg in water and ice cubes all encourage your pet to drink more, and can keep them entertained indoors on hot days. You can also chill or freeze licke-mats, Kong's stuffed with paste, use cool mats, add water to their food, or swap to wet food for a while.
Pets with flat faces, senior pets or those with other illnesses and darker furred pets are more prone to heat stroke, so take extra care with these and use fans or shelter to provide active cooling and shade. Pale or sparsely furred pets may also get sunburn, pet friendly sun cream is available in the clinic.

Another grass seed! This poor pup had two pieces of grass seed between his toes deep under the skin and had developed an abscess over the area, so needed sedation to investigate what was going on.
Please be super careful walking in longer grass as these blighters can be a nightmare to find and treat, and extremely painful for your pets.
Either avoid long grass in seed, check paws thoroughly after each walk, or ideally do both!

28/06/2024

If your pet limps, hops, or walks awkwardly all of a sudden, they are most likely sore
somewhere. Pets do not often show pain by yelping, but will try to change how they move to use the painful area as little as possible. With mild cases this may resolve with a short period of rest, but anti-inflammatory medications, laser therapy and a longer rest period may help in other cases.
Untreated lameness that goes on for a while will affect the sore area, as well as others, and can increase injury or arthritic changes your pet experiences as they get older.

How gross would it be if you didn't brush your teeth?
Unfortunately dogs and cats get plaque and tartar just like us. If untreated it can lead to pain, infection, wobbly teeth and costly extractions.
Best practice is to brush teeth - ask us to demo how this can be done, it's surprising how many pets don't mind, or even enjoy it!
If you cannot manage tooth brushing, there are gum wipes, sprays, special biscuits and water additives which can also help.
Some pets are more prone to dental problems than others and it is a common cause of smelly breath in many pets, especially as they age.
