Being on an island means we might be at lower risk for getting infections from the rest of the world, but it also can mean that our population has been sheltered, and might have poorer immunity. We see this in people when tourists bring coughs and colds, but it can happen in our dogs too! Some infections we vaccinate against are picked up from urine, bites, or other direct contact (i.e. playing on the beach), so to reduce the risk we recommend keeping up to date with regular vaccinations each year from puppies, right through to older age.

Does anyone have any pigeon corn, poultry mix or wild bird seed that they could let us have for an exhausted & starved racing pigeon we have in ( & for the lots of other injured birds that we look after)
If you do please, could you drop it off to AAWS, you can just leave it on the clinic doorstep and one of us will pick it up.

We know we have feral cats on Alderney in various areas, and all cats naturally roam so will likely come into contact with each other if they go outdoors. We also know that both feral and pet cats already have diseases which can seriously affect their health here on the island. Cat bites, scratches, and getting pregnant are all routes of infection from one cat to another. To reduce the risk of this for cats who go outdoors, keeping their vaccinations up to date prevents potentially fatal viral infections, or consider neutering entire pets to reduce their motivation to go roaming.

Thank you to everyone for their amazing feedback from our Animal Health Chat videos by Kelly. These take rather a lot of time and effort to organise, and seeing as she got married over the weekend she is having a little break from these Monday video uploads, enjoying the Alderney weather, and we will be back with more videos in the Autumn.
Don't forget you can always ask us for advice and help at the clinic about any of your pets, on any subject!

Pet of the month for June, I know we are not at the end of the month yet but.....
Slipper came to us with a grass seed under her lower eyelid, with the grass seed barb stuck on the delicate tissues.
Her owner had safely removed a grass seed already but this bit was well and truly stuck.
Slipper was so good despite it being painful, she let one nurse hold her head and eye open, one nursing assistant shine a light in her eye and one nurse to get hold of the seed with forceps and gently remove it.
She was an absolute star, wagged her tail, took her treats and went home with pain relief and eye ointnent, with her eye looking much better.

Please check your dogs after every walk for grass seeds in the coat, around the eyes, between the toes and in the long hair in the ears.

Well done Slipper you were a superstar.

Flea infestations are a real itchy subject! They can be difficult and take time to remove once established, so preventative treatment can be given to ensure any fleas your pet encounters will die off instead of breeding and being spread into the home. Most of these will kill any fleas within 24-48h of attachment, and will last from 1 month or more, depending on the brand. Some are spot on topical treatments while others are tablets. A new innovation includes an injection for dogs which can prevent flea infestations for a whole year! This stops you having to remember to give the tablet or spot on regularly, please contact the clinic if this is something you feel interested in for your dog.

After the great feedback for our Animal Health chats please find our next one, this one on preventative care for dogs!
If you have any ideas for topics we haven't covered or if you have any questions or queries please do contact us at the clinic.
