As our feline friends get old, it’s important to ensure we continue to look after them the best we can. Older cats can hide arthritis well, but will often be reluctant to jump onto high surfaces, or stop grooming their back legs and lower back, they may choose to snooze in warm areas, or change in habits - being more cuddly or less tolerant of being picked up.
We provide a free senior health pet check per year so we can make sure we do not miss any new or changing conditions, and to look after them the best possible way, this might include regular nail trims so their nails don't dig into their pads, pain relief for those with arthritis, and bloods for times when their behaviour, eating and drinking habits or weight has changed suddenly.

We are absolutely thrilled to have the wonderful Tracy back for a short period from the end of this week to allow Kelly some time off, please give her a big Alderney welcome as we have all missed her, and fingers crossed the weather is kind while she's here 💖

Check out our pet of the month for August!
Dave has had a very uncomfortable eye and we thought he might need surgery, but he has been a little superstar for his drops and his owners have been amazing at scheduling his medications and now he's much happier!
Well done Dave, and to mum and dad too

Edit: now reunited!
Two labradors have been handed in to us as strays, their microchip details are not up to date, if anyone knows who they may belong to please ask the owner to call the clinic on 01481822616 or 07781102365

Don't miss out! There is still plenty of time to draw your favourite Alderney animal or pet and have them all on a tea towel! Pick up submission forms in the clinic or email us with your details and the clear image to [email protected]
Closing date for all images needs to be the end of September so we can make sure they arrive in time for Christmas gifting!

Don't forget, you can draw your favourite Alderney pet on a tea towel and order in time for Christmas!
Due to popular demand this has now been opened to ADULTS as well as children!
Find submission forms as well as the entry box at the clinic, and get them back to us before the end of September, with details of how many towels you would like to order.
You can order a tea towel without drawing an image yourself if your pet is featured (or you just want a cute towel made by budding artists of our lovely animals) but again, requests to be made by the end of September

Exercise is great for dogs, it helps keep their muscles in good condition, their weight healthy, and gives them lots of fun activities to do, smells and the social impact of greeting other dogs and people. However, some exercise is more stressful to particular joints than others, sea swimming is stressful on the elbows, especially if the current or waves are strong; throwing balls and sticks can result in animals either using their elbows and shoulders to break suddenly, or turning at the last moment which strains the hips and knees; jumping down from tall heights means all the dog’s weight is on their shoulders in a high impact way; and pulling sports such as canicross can result on lots of strain on hind legs as the dog pulls along their owner!
The important thing to remember is everything in moderation (except throwing sticks please), so that they get variety, and are not being over-exercised, particularly when they are young. Over exercising puppies often leads to injury to the immature growth plates of the long bones and early onset arthritic changes which are irreversible and painful.

For anyone not already aware, Michele has now left us at AAW, and we wish her many best wishes for the future.
This does mean Kelly is solo again for a while so please be patient and kind when you can. Brief reminder:
Medications require AT LEAST 48 working notice, either leave a voicemail, an email, or a message at reception and Kelly will sort when she can.
Collections of food and medications is in reception during opening hours UNLESS they have been paid for when ordering, when they can be collected in the collection area opposite the toilet in the car park.
The new deal with Hills pet food means we get massive discounts, but can mean food takes an extra week or so to arrive, please order BEFORE running out, we have a very small space and cannot stock everything for everyone all of the time.

Thank you again for your patience, as ever Kelly is available on the emergency out of hours number 07781102365 if required when the clinic is closed, but please do reserve this line for urgent care (for example if you would attend A&E for yourself, a relative or your child displaying similar symptoms)

We would kindly ask that open food bags, sacks, and bin bags not be left at the AAW food bank. Open food bags quickly spoil and become unsuitable, and bin bags of food are difficult to identify accurately. The food bank is kept well stocked of clearly marked, labelled, and sealed pet food, which is safe and free for anyone to collect. If you are unsure if a donation is suitable, please ask. Thank you to all those who donate!

15/08/2025

Guinea pigs can make amazing and rewarding pets, they squeak and squeal, jump and play, but they have some important needs that any owners should be aware of. They have incredibly delicate spines, and so should not be allowed to climb on raised surfaces, or housed with rabbits to prevent injury. Much like rabbits they do need to eat lots of fibre constantly in order to keep their teeth worn down, this should mean their diet is mostly hay, with a good supply of widely varied fresh vegetables, and some pellets. The food pellets should not be muesli style, this allows Guinea pigs to choose to eat only the extra tasty and high fat seeds and nuts while ignoring the other ingredients, instead giving pellets which are uniform in size and shape which are much more reliably nutritious. Guinea pigs need regular Vitamin C, so ensure their fresh veg has a good source included, and they should not be allowed to breed if females have not given birth prior to 2 years of age.

Wow, what an Alderney week!
Thank you to everyone who came to our open day, Kelly had a mini adventure last Friday taking a seal from Jersey to rehab in the UK! This little baby is a common seal, ironically not very common in our Channel Island waters. But after being found alone and needing some help, South Essex wildlife hospital had found her space and with the help of some very short notice scheduling, lovely pilots who happened to be on holiday and thankfully cooperative weather she is now settled and fingers crossed on the road to recovery 🦭
It's amazing to see what we can pull off when we all work together, including the British Divers Marine Life Rescue Donna, our aviation heroes, all the help at each airfield, and to South Essex Wildlife Hospital the biggest thank you possible! Good luck on the rest of your recovery Bluebell 💙
