Myiasis in a cat.

He was slightly sedated before work began.

The growing larvae were taken out one by one and deposited in a container near by. The resulting holes were then irrigated. He also received some shots.

SENSITIVE CONTENT WARNING ‼️‼️

This is a classical case of myiasis on a bunny.

Myasis is an infestation of the skin by developing fly larvae, commonly known as maggots. The fly eggs hatch into larvae and burrow into moist of wounded skin. As they grow older within the skin, they feed on the host and cause great pain and discomfort.
If left unchecked, they can burrow into the intestines or brain, the condition can prove fatal.

What has flies laying eggs got to do with my pet?😒🙄😤

It is quite common in dogs and cats who have urine-soaked skin, who have moist or wounded skin, or who generally “practice” poor hygiene (which is certainly not a fault of theirs😑). Dogs with short limbs who like to play farmers are also at a high risk of getting myiasis. Then there are those who just enjoy playing in mud. It is very easy for such dogs to pick up eggs laid in the soil (the soil they normally dig into is moist). The rest is history.

Keeping a clean, mud free environment can go a long way to protect your lovely fur balls😽🐶 from harm's way.

By the time the doctor arrived, there was a thin blood clot formed, temporarily stopping the flow of blood. Immediately he stood up, the clot shifted and blood began to gush out once more. His eyes and gum were very pale. He had lost a considerable amount of blood.

The severed vessel was quickly sutured. He was put on fluids as well to rehydrate him. As there are no pet blood banks in Ghana, haematinics were prescribed for him.

This is what met her eye after she responded to the call of her dog's whimpering.
He was slouched on the floor, with his limb raised in a manner to slow down the flow of blood. A quick emergency call was made - at dawn.

What had happened here?

In the wee hours of the morning, he had gone out to play with his sibling. As they jumped high and low, run through nooks and crannies in search of any form of entertainment, disaster struck. It appeared one of his major blood vessels was sliced through quickly by an iron sheet located at the back of the house.

Blood began to gush out immediately. This quick thinking individual quickly bundled himself to his mum's door, knocked on the door while whimpering incessantly. He lifted his cut limb to slow down the loss of blood, while waiting.

It's December 🎉🎉🎊🎊🎊🎈🎈

Christmas is right around the corner and festivities are about to begin. Here are a few things to look out for with your pet:

✅ No chocolates!!! Ignore those puppy eyes. Chocolates are a no- go area if you want to keep them safe.

✅No sharing of your food. The onions, garlic and ginger content in our food, though safe for us, has proven to be poisonous to dogs and cats, even in smaller quantities (when they build up over time).Do not allow pets to eat even the leftovers and be mindful of the trash.

✅Christmas trees are a must - have during this season. But beware of the ornamental balls and bulbs, which could double as chew toys.

✅Anything else to look out for??

How did I end up on face flat on the floor, with a stinging pain originating from my thigh and a dog looming over me, momentarily stunned and unsure of what to do after taking a jab at me?
Especially after all my years of experience expertly dodging the jaws of dogs and claws of cats?
It was a simple vaccination case. Except, it was with an aggressive dog.
Knowing the dog was aggressive, I offered to bring a restrainer along; a suggestion which was short down at once with the excuse he could handle the dog himself. That wasn’t a problem as well.
When I got into the house and saw the dog, it was obvious he was ready to attack, with the cage being the only barrier. That did not faze me. What made me pause in my steps however, was the worn out collar and leash around his neck.
“Are you sure that leash can hold?”
“Oh yes! It was the same thing used to restrain him the last time”
“Really? You are sure we do not need a restrainer?”
“Oh no, I can do it myself. Its no big deal.”
“I see. You’ll pay damages if your dog bites me oh. Id have to get rabies shots since he hasn’t been vaccinated yet”
“Don’t worry koraa. It will be fine”
It will be fine. It will be fine.
How then did the leash break?
How did you end up shifting out of the cage for him to pounce on me?
It will be fine????
I quickly jumped out of harm’s way and lay flat on my face, unfortunately, still sustaining a few wounds on my leg. He halted, confused as to the next course of action. That was when Mr. Fine called out to him to get back into the cage.
As I slowly got back up, disoriented about the whole ordeal, his next words shocked me.
“Hmm. This is so sad. The last time, a metal chain and collar were used to restrain him. I felt sad for him so I swapped it out for this. Hmm. Even the members of my household do not want to get close to him, even to feed him”

Sir?????
📌That is why home training is important. Train your dogs to be comfortable with a mouth gaurd. Or train them to understand when to attack and when not to.

The decision to euthanize might be one of the hardest decision a pet parent has to make. Even when that decision is made out of love and compassion in an effort to take one’s fur friend out of pain and distress, there is sometimes feelings of guilt and despair.

Euthanasia, simply defined as mercy killing, is the act of painlessly killing a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or situation. It is done to end a patient’s suffering.

Larger dog breeds tend to live less than ten years and most dogs rarely live over 15 years. As they grow older, the quality of life significantly reduces.

Eating becomes a chore as they can go for days without being able to eat, walking is accompanied by excruciating pain such that they would rather not move, there is difficulty breathing, there is recurrent distressing skin lesions and irritations, there is difficulty urinating or defecating and hoards of other medical issues.

Day to day activities become unbearable.

As painful as it is to accept, every dog will at some point pass away.
Sadly, there’s literally nothing that can be done other than to celebrate their life and memories made. Always speak to your veterinarian first to guide in a proper decision making.

It was a sad event when this family of four had to bid their four-legged companion goodbye. At the ripe age of 13 years (equivalent to 74 human years), his body had began to fail him.

Within a couple of weeks, she was taken in for surgery to have the pr*****ed va**na surgically removed. The removed portion was tested to figure out what it was.
Turns out, it was cancerous tissue. She was suffering from cancer of the va**na.

Thankfully, it appeared the cancerous tissue was limited to that region and had not yet metastasized (moved to other organs).

Tumors of the va**na and v***a are the second most common reproductive tumors in dogs, second to mammary gland tumors.

As with all cases of cancer, the root cause is unidentifiable. Most seem to be caused by a mix of environmental and genetic factors, as well as the breed, s*x and age of the subject.

Some risk factors for cancer in general include
Age (older dogs)
Obesity
Exposure to chemicals like pesticides or herbicides
Smoking (Yhup, some pets are inadvertently secondary smokers due to exposure to to***co smoke)
Infection
Genetics
Reproductive status (unspayed dogs are more likely to develop cancers).

Most va**nal tumours are caused by hormonal issues. Thus, the majority of dogs who develop them are unspayed females. There is also another form of tumour which is contagious and has no hormonal element. Canine transmissible venereal tumors are cancerous canine tumors that can be spread from dog to dog by touch. It is s*xually ransmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact or through biting, licking and sniffing the tumor affected areas.

Treating a skin infection .

Common causes of skin infections are bacteria, fungi and allergies. Ticks, mites and fleas can also cause serious distress such that they would scratch until the skin breaks. This then gives microbes a leeway to get under the skin and wreck havoc.

In this case, he had ticks under his fur. The alopecia (loss of hair) was suspected to be as a result of mites.

Treatment began immediately.

Lethargic.
Redundant.
Frail.
That’s how she looked. Vomiting, complete loss of appetite, inability to stand for long. Those were the signs she presented with. Immediately, samples were taken to the lab for analysis while she was given symptomatic treatment in the form of fluids and other medication.

Even though she appeared to be getting better, the results from the lab did not look good. Her liver was inflamed and her kidneys were not in good shape. An ultrasound scan was arranged in her home.

According to the ultrasound, there were abnormal growths on her liver which appeared to be tumours. Arrangements were made to start chemotherapy the next week (the ultrasound was done on a weekend). Unfortunately, the next day, we received a call that she was vomiting blood, with clots in it. It was an aggressive cancer. A decision had been made. She was to be put down.

A quick visit was made. Her father sat there, unwilling to sign the consent form. Reminiscing how they first met.
He was on a motorcycle, going somewhere he had forgotten about. On the roadside was she, hoisted up for sale. Once they made eye contact, he knew he had to have her. So much that he turned his bike around to get money after making enquiries on the cost.

Now, 7 years down the line, drowning in memories, he had to make the difficult choice – a signature that will end it all; including her suffering.

06/11/2023

She also received some shots to aid in wound healing and prevent the wound from festering.

Her paws were red and raw.
She had sustained multiple injuries on the pads of each paw, which unfortunately, was hidden with the dirt until we cleaned it off.

Due to the pain she was in, her appetite had significantly dropped.
The paws were cleaned with antibiotic wound solution. A wound healing spray was also used.

06/11/2023

After hurting all four paws (probably from cat fights in the neighborhood), this old lady could barely rollover.

We soon figured out why she could not even put up a decent fight after cleaning the paws

Treatment began for the two and a prescription was handed over. The third dog was thankfully not affected.

Over the next couple of days, they were hand fed food (which they gulped down) and water. By now, only their heads could move. Their medication was hidden in the food given.

Within the week, they could stand on their feet once more.

While the other one was being attended to, this one started going down.

There were 3 dogs in the house. They had a history of pouncing on, killing and gobbling up any living thing that was unfortunate enough to stray into their house. Out of the 3, two were currently paralysed, while the last one pounced on a bird that strayed too close to the ground, right before our eyes, in the middle of treating the other two.

Both had no history or apparent evidence of ectoparasites. It was believed to be a case of paralysis due to poisoning.

Just a lick of poisonous creatures could render them poisononed and paralysed.
Note: Extra care needs to be taken in training pets in certain environment, especially ones with lots of plants.
