A critical pillar of responsibile dog ownership is training your dog how to live within human society as a dog.
My 17 month old Asia with her almost 6 year old companion Levi out at a busy restaurant last night and dressed for the occasion. Yes they wear harnesses because control isn't about the tool its about a dog that feels secure and confident, a dog that takes life in their stride. The rowdy party table Infront of us didn't bother them, the children running round the courtyard mildly interesting but more so when said children came to feed them juicy morsels. Both my dogs do protection work, Levi has his gold canine good citizen and Asia her bronze ( working on the silver and gold). They trust me to make good decisions and I trust then to make good decisions. Yes training was involved and yes it started the day they arrived in my home, training that involved games, fun, encouraging confidence and calmness. Sure more titles would be nice but what brings me the greatest sense of pride is watching how these two interact with the world and how well adjusted they are. A breed often deemed as agressive and unpredictable has at the very least these two showing Johannesburg that well adjusted happy Dobermanns exist. That you don't need force or fear to control a dog and that it isn't really about control but actually about trust.
