For the record, canine socialization doesn’t look like human socialization. It’s not about getting a bunch of unfamiliar dogs in the same room and forcing them to interact, play, and compete for dominance. Hell, humans have a tough enough time getting along, how can we expect our dogs to adapt to our definition of “socializing.” I’ll admit, it’s hard not to get trapped in the pretty language and potential enjoyment of dropping your dog off at daycare, or bringing them to that new brewery that is dog-friendly, but what we have to learn is what *quality* socialization looks like.
Proper socialization means exposing dogs to different environments, and experiences, and showing them the proper ways to succeed. It’s not about saying hello to every dog or person you pass on your walk, and it’s not about making sure they “play enough” with other dogs. There are plenty of dogs out there that live perfectly happy lives with minimal interaction with other dogs or people. It’s not about the frequency of the interactions, it’s about the value. Quality over quantity.
The reason we have such concern about large-scale facilities is that (most) are undermanaged, chaotic, and generally unhealthy environments to teach our dogs how to interact and “play.” So many small moments are being missed while dogs learn to pattern forceful play or submissive behaviors. The biggest tiff we have is the shockingly high percentage of dogs that come to us for dog reactivity, aggression, fearfulness, etc. that were at one point daycare attendees. There’s a theme, and it’s been going on for years now.
Look, if your dog is one of the few that actually enjoys these environments, great, this message probably isn’t for you. But if you’ve got a dog that’s showing warning signs, take note, because perceptions can change faster than you think.

Daycare Facility Alternatives:

• Dog walker
• Bring-your-dog-to-work-day
• Small-scale daycare (not 25 dogs in a room with one employee)
• Trainer-daycare (ask your trainer if they offer daycare services)

A healthy environment has structure, supervision, rules, and order. ~~~~~~

Everyone wants a quick fix, yet rarely does anyone want to continue the process. Busy, kids, work, sports, the list goes on and on. The expectation that a living, breathing, creature with predisposed genetic traits is just going to magically learn and maintain training criteria, is a common delusion…. Dogs are not Robots

It’s rampant Peeps…

Just about every dog owner I pass on a walk, apologizing for their pet’s ridiculously obnoxious behavior, all while trying to soothe Pookey’s reactivity with baby talk... “It’s okay Pookey”, “Leave it Pookey!” Pookey, you’re okay.” “Leave it, Leave it, Leave it, Leave it…”

Owners are being drug all over on walks, dogs are going berserk over anything that moves or startles them, and are guarding anything they feel is their property (even you). And this isn’t just one specific breed hosting all of these issues—It is now a norm to see EVERY breed, and EVERY size dog, in a nervous, anxious, defensive frenzy.

Here’s the thing... Dogs learn what TO DO, and what to KEEP DOING, through rewards. Lovey-Dovey undertones, soft and cuddly strokes to the head, and sweet reassurances send one signal, and one signal alone—“Good Girl!” When we use soft and cuddly tactics to try and teach our dog to STOP doing something, we may as well throw her a t-bone, and tell her “Nice work! Keep doing what you’re doing kiddo!”

The only way any species learns to make a different choice is when the outcome for making the original is unfavorable enough to make a NEW consideration the next time around.

Humans have turned consequences for bad behavior into something that is unhealthy for development, relationship, and growth. Yet permissiveness, allowance, and all the cuddly stuff we so readily dispense, is the leading reason dogs are being euthanized at an alarming rate year over year.

Consequences shape all behavior. Saying “No” is not abuse.

Without the “No” and a believable correction for doing something wrong, none of us get the full scope of learning. “No’s” create clarity. Rules are muddy without them. And it is only the anticipation of what COULD happen, good or bad, that changes behavior.

Rule the walk, manage the house, enforce rules, set boundaries, and discipline behavioral infractions that are convincing enough to stop the biting, pulling, barking, guarding, and just plain freaking out.

“No” is not abuse folks. It’s a necessary ingredient in the learning recipe.
