How to know if your Rabbit is Sick or ill

As a devoted rabbit owner, it's essential to be vigilant about your furry friend's health and well-being. Rabbits, like any other living creatures, can fall ill, and it's crucial to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of illness. By staying observant and proactive, you can ensure your rabbit receives the necessary care and attention promptly. Here are some key indicators to help you identify if your rabbit is sick or ill:

📢Changes in Eating Habits: A sudden decrease in appetite or a complete loss of interest in food is often a significant red flag. Pay attention to any changes in your rabbit's eating patterns, as a decrease in food consumption can indicate an underlying health issue.

📢Weight Loss: Frequent monitoring of your rabbit's weight is crucial. If you notice a significant and unexplained drop in weight, it's a sign that something may be wrong. Weight loss can be indicative of various health conditions and should be addressed promptly.

📢Abnormal Stool: Keep an eye on your rabbit's droppings. If you notice a drastic change in their size, shape, consistency, or color, it may indicate an issue with their digestive system. Soft, mushy, or extremely small droppings can be signs of gastrointestinal problems.

📢Changes in Water Consumption: Pay attention to your rabbit's water intake. An increase or decrease in drinking habits can be an indication of an underlying health problem. Excessive thirst or a sudden refusal to drink should not be ignored.

📢Lethargy and Weakness: Rabbits are generally active and curious creatures. If your rabbit displays a lack of energy, becomes unusually lethargic, or seems weak, it may be a sign of illness. Keep an eye out for reduced mobility or difficulty moving around.

📢Respiratory Issues: Labored breathing, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, or any other respiratory distress should be taken seriously. Respiratory issues can range from minor infections to more severe conditions and require immediate veterinary attention.

📢Unkempt Appearance: Rabbits are known for their grooming habits. If you notice a decline in your rabbit's grooming routine, such as a lack of self-cleaning or a disheveled appearance, it could indicate an underlying health problem or discomfort.

📢Eye and Nose Discharge: Watery or cloudy eyes, excessive tearing, or discharge from the eyes or nose may indicate an infection or respiratory issue. Additionally, any signs of crusting around the eyes or nose should be evaluated by a veterinarian.

📢Changes in Behavior: A noticeable change in your rabbit's behavior can indicate illness. If your usually social rabbit becomes withdrawn, irritable, or unusually aggressive, it may be a sign that they are not feeling well.

📢Unusual Vocalizations: Rabbits are generally quiet animals, but if you notice your rabbit making unusual or distressing sounds, such as whimpering or squealing, it could be a sign of pain or discomfort.

Remember, rabbits are prey animals, and they are adept at hiding signs of illness. If you notice any of these signs or have concerns about your rabbit's health, it's important to seek professional veterinary advice. A rabbit-savvy veterinarian can provide a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.

Regular veterinary check-ups are also crucial for maintaining your rabbit's health and preventing potential illnesses. By being attentive and proactive, you can ensure that your beloved rabbit receives the necessary care and attention to lead a happy, healthy life.

EAR MITE IN RABBIT.
Ear mite infestation in rabbits is caused by the parasite Psoroptes cuniculiis. They may be found in only rabbit ears and in some cases may spread to the surrounding areas the head, neck, abdomen, and ge***al regions. The main symptom is skin scales on the inner ear, which turn into larger, thicker crusted lesions with surrounding hair loss. If left untreated, the lesions can become infected, putting the inner ear at risk of infection and subsequent hearing loss.
SYMPTOMS
- Intense itching of the infected areas mostly the ears, head, and neck.
- Head shaking and scratching.
- Affected areas may become extremely painful.
- Thick, brown to beige crusty exudate in the ear.
- Chewing of ears.
- Hair loss and peeling of skin around the ears.
- loss of weight
- Inflammation and crusting of the external ear canal of one or both ear.
TREATMENT
Ear mite is contagious, so making it necessary to treat rabbits that are in contact with the rabbit that is infected, thoroughly clean and treat the environment in which the rabbit lives. Remove and discard all organic material from the cage, including wood or paper products, and bedding, the cage should also be thoroughly cleaned regularly. Antiparasitic drug called ivermectin can be used to eliminate the mites from your rabbit's ears and crusts on the skin should not be removed, as they will only reveal exposed tissue. Once treatment has begun and the mites are no longer infesting the crusted skin, the underlying skin will be able to heal and the crusts will fall away.

5 MISTAKES NEW FARMERS MAKE

1. Not writing a farm plan

A farm plan will help you design your farm's layout. If you intend to build a dam you will need to know the best site to place it. Making a plan will also help you to get to know your land; where any wetlands are, drainage patterns in the field and soil types on the farm. Knowing this information is essential because you want to grow your crops in the best soil and if you constructing buildings you don’t want to put them on the arable land.

2. Not writing a business plan

It still surprises me that so many farmers do not have business plans. Without a business plan you cannot apply for funding or loans. Without a business plan you are not running a business but maybe a hobby—a hobby that is probably draining money from your wallet.

3. Growing (or raising animals) without a secured market

This is the first thing you must find before even putting your crop into the ground. Without a market you risk making huge losses by growing produce that your market does not want.

4. Thinking about transportation at the last minute

Transportation can prove to be very costly especially for farmers searching for distant markets. I have friends in Honde Valley that grow bananas and some of their market is in Harare so you can imagine the transport horrors they face if they do not organize themselves in advance.

5. Not keeping or updating farm records regularly

Without records you do not know if things are going right or wrong. If they are going wrong it is easier to track at what point that they started to go wrong. Farm records also allow a farmer to compare yields from the previous season, to compare animal performance, to detect wastage or leakage.

Marketing your rabbits

Marketing rabbit has become a challenge to many farmer but this are few tips to get the market which I use...cause I talk about rabbit as if am preaching everywhere I go the public are the market ...rabbit market are not within farmers who already have rabbits but the public Ghana has a lot of population as well

Start by creating awareness among individuals, beginning with families, friends and colleagues, restaurants, hotels, eateries etc. Tell them about the nutritional value of rabbits, as well as the economic importance.

However, it is advisable that you carry out more research on your own even before setting up a rabbit farm. You must know the market strategies and the level of demand, as this will help you to avoid unnecessary losses and regrets ..is expected that before one ventures into rabbit production, one must find where to sell them. One should find a way of creating awareness through advertising. The rabbit farmer can print flyers and distribute to universities and research institutes or even secondary schools that use them for experiments. The farmer can also advertise in churches, neighbourhoods, farms and corporate bodies.tell people more about the meat and the benefit it has on young and ageing people...Rabbit is mainly produced for meat. Its meat is very tasty and nutritious. It contains high levels of protein, calcium, vitamin and energy, and very little amounts of cholesterol and fat thus making it the toast of people of all age brackets, especially old people.

Rabbit Maths (40 doe unit case study)

1, Each rabbit gives birth to an average of 7 kits

2, 7x40 = 280 kits (minus mortalities so let’s say 250 rabbits net)

3, With good breeding plan, a rabbit can give birth 8 times a year. So 8x250 = 2000 rabbits a year.

4, On an average you sell 1 rabbit for 50ghc. So 50x2000 = 100,000 ghc.

5, Minus cost of feeding and medication 40%. So 100,000-40,000 = 60,000ghc

6, 60,000ghc divided by 365 days = 164 ghc a day profit.

So basically if you take everything serious and things moves on smoothly for you, you can make 160 ghc a day as a rabbit farmer. Which job will pay you that much?

Let’s take rabbit farming serious.

No. Waste. Ever
Rabbits are more than just meat in our freezer.
They are tanned furs, 10x warmer than wool, being made into a blanket.
They are never ending perfect pooping machines, that fertilize our gardens.
They are nutrient dense heads for our dogs, so they can eat biologically correct diets.
They are food security, heading into uncertain times.
They are also a joy to raise, from birth to harvest.
I’ll never stop praising the value of rabbits on a homestead💛
