As we're sure you all know, last year was a very tough year for the Stepping Stones team after the sudden passing of Madeline - the owner and founder of the charity.

Madeline died with around 100 dogs and puppies in her care in what was essentially her private home.

It was no longer possible for the dogs to stay there into 2024, so our mission became to find them all loving forever homes or foster homes by the end of the year. Thankfully, we managed it and all Madeline's dogs spent their first Christmas without her in warm, loving forever or foster homes.

However, we still have 2 dogs called Matty and Foxy that are living together in private kennels here on the island.

The owners of the kennels have been very kindly subsidising their long stay considerably. Additionally, 2 extremely generous private donors have been sponsoring their stay.

It has now come to the point where they can no longer stay in the kennels beyond April.

They would ideally be placed together as they are a bonded pair and would really help each other to settle we think.

Here is some extra information about them:

Matty is now around 3 years old and Foxy must be around 7 now I think, but I will check that for you.

They were both recently blood tested and are to the best of our knowledge in perfect health. They are full of fun and energy and we regularly take them out of the kennels for long walks together .

Matty is a beautiful boy and mixes exceptionally well with other dogs and cats. He is extremely affectionate with people that he already knows, but is wary of new people and needs lots of attention and love to overcome this initial fear. He is in no way aggressive though, and is very able to accept new human friends given a little bit of time and an environment in which he feels safe.

Foxy is similarly excellent at socialising with other dogs and cats. She is very calm and docile and gets confidence from being with her best friend Matt. She is a very sweet, special girl but has always been very shy around humans, so will need lots of love, time and patience whilst she adapts. Foxy was fostered briefly in a home, and was coping very well, but sadly the foster placement fell through as the person's personal circumstances changed.

Matty and Foxy really are the most beautiful dogs and are very close to my heart. They just need a special human friend with lots of love and patience to nurture them and not give up on them.

Matty is just bursting with love and kisses. Foxy is also very affectionate and loving, but she shows it in a much quieter way - like nuzzling your hand or quietly rolling over for you.

Sheba in her forever home! These photos were from the first days, she settled easily. This is what her new owner wrote to us:
Sheba had a good first night, little bit timid and I guess overwhelmed by everything! But her and Pepper seem to get a long fine and they've been walking nicely together today. Sheba met some dog friends at the park and had a play with them all. She's such a good girl! She is a bit scared of stairs so atm she is sleeping downstairs, I carried her upstairs last night lol

Stepping Stones is now closed, and all dogs have left. After a little deserved break, we (a few volunteers) are now focusing on rehoming our last dogs in fosterhomes.. Matt, Foxy, Jane and Hannah. Besides them, you will find a few other dogs on our website. They are fostered by people who have asked our help. Have a look at our website www.steppingstoneskefalonia.org

This is 💜POPPY💜, she was found abandoned and is now in fostercare with Rebecca Kefalonia Paws who is full time helping and fostering the strays. Poppy has to stay in an outdoor pen as no space indoors.. but with winter arriving and all the storms and thunders she is so frightened. We really need to find her a warm home asap. 🌟🌟🌟🌟Let’s find a home for FOXY 🌟🌟🌟🌟

We have a few dogs left that are now in private foster care and are in need of their forever home. The 6 year old Foxy is one of them! 🐕
Foxy is fostered by the lovely Eva Süllentrup! She is a volunteer for Tierfreunde Kefalonia Vienna and helped Madeline for many years with rehoming dogs. Therefore she knows Foxy and is very experienced in training dogs with social anxiety. Together with our volunteer Laura Van Der Waerden, Foxy gets daily walks and gets more and more used to new situations. It's all about babysteps 🥰👶

Some more about her character when she used to live in Stepping Stones..
She was always a very shy and soft girl. It took her time to come close to you but when she trusts you, she does. We have had her free for a period, she got better but it the end the amount of dogs was too much and she felt better in a kennel with only a few dogs. After many years with volunteers coming and out she is now better with the humans she knows. You still need lots of patience but we can touch her now. She will be a project but once you gained her trust we're sure she will be your best friend. The last period she started to play with other dogs, she felt more happy and got used to the volunteers and the less dogs around.

We believe Foxy would settle very well in a quit home with someone that can give her time and patience. She would love it to have another confident dog to show her the way. She's fine with cats too. (well.. she has too as Eva has many cats 😅)

We are happy to inform you that our single mission is now complete! 🥳🤩🥰🙏
The last 3 dogs are waiting to travel and then we really will close the gate for the last time...
If only Madeline's work was finished... NOT.

UPDATE - SHEBA is adopted!! 🥰🥳
‼️Urgent home needed - PLEASE share‼️
♡ SHEBA ♡

Sheba is a 7 year old, very friendly, affectionate, and sociable girl who loves walks and cuddles and meeting new human friends.😍

She was rescued as a stray with her 3 small puppies. Sadly, one of her puppies, Lola, had been badly abused and needed urgent veterinary care. Mum and pups were all rescued and brought to Stepping Stones.

Thankfully, Lola made a full recovery, and she and the other pups, Shelby and Simone, are all now in loving forever homes in Germany. 🤩

However, poor Sheba has been left on the shelf, and it's heartbreaking as she has been through so much 😢 💔 One of her back paws is disformed and she has a scar that goes around her ankle. We're not sure what happened here.. the vet couldn't tell us if she is born with a disformed paw or if this comes from an injury.. we're afraid it's the last one 😒

Sheba is a healthy girl, well-socialised with other dogs and cats and very confident with new people.

She really is such an easy girl and just needs someone to welcome her into their home.❤️

Please find a place in your heart for beautiful Sheba. She has so much love and affection to give and so deserves to finally enjoy life in a comfortable home as someone's special companion. 🥰🤞🤞

Please don't worry, we are taking care of everything. All dogs except of Lisa and sheba have homes or emergency foster homes to go to. Sheba and Lisa will of course not be left behind. All dogs are living in an empty house at the moment which is not ideal but we do our best to work around our schedules to pop in when we can. We need homes asap. Please help us to find homes for Lisa and Sheba 🤗🙏

Timothy has always been the wisest of them all. In his 8 years, he saw hundreds of dogs, people, some horses, some cats, chickens, and a few other birds. 🐕🧍‍♀️🐎🐈🐔🐦‍⬛
He has been 'Stepping Stones headmaster '.
It's now time for Timmie to retire! Who can give this mister a well-deserved retirement? 🥰🙏

We are so pleased to inform you that Chicco has found his forever home in Skala 🥰
Project 'Chicco' was another success! We took small steps for socializing him as no one could touch him.. Or at least that was what he was 'telling' us.. deep down, there was a scared boy who desperately needed attention. 💔😞
Our volunteers slowly managed to gain his trust.. until he allowed them to touch him. So the next step was a check by the vet and a good haircut! Not long after, we got a message from a lovely couple in Skala that adopted a small female dog 2 years ago!
We arranged for Chicco to stay for a good week with Despina. She was amazing and helped Chicco to get used to regular walks and to live in a more 'normal' home.

Our preparations for Chicco were definitely helping as his new sister was very happy to welcome him 😊. He settled in very well and was fine with his adopters.
It shows to never give up on a 'scared/anxious dog. It just takes the right TLC 🥰

Bye little Chicco! You deserve the best life 🥰

Yesterday I had a warm welcome from our friends 🥰 Trixie and Timothy looked a bit sad.. they miss Madeline a lot.
We are still looking for good forever homes for Sheba, Lisa and Timothy ❤️🙏
