Harry update

I don't think it's going well. Harry appears to be fine; he has a healthy appetite, and he's active and looks happy, but his gums are completely white (sure sign of returning anemia), and there is no positive progress.

I'm afraid that we're going through a repeat of what happened after the first transfusion (steady apparent wellness, followed by sudden deterioration). The vets in both clinics involved in his treatment believe that his bone marrow has lost the ability to make new blood and that a third blood transfusion would be pointless, just prolonging the inevitable and subjecting him to unnecessary distress.

I continue with all medication because I cannot give up hope until the very last minute, and he's very comfortable, has company 24/7, and enjoys all his favorite foods. Unfortunately, that's the best I can do for him.

This situation is very difficult for me. It is especially difficult to accept that this is not going to end well because he doesn't even look sick πŸ˜”

😻 Some good news at last! 😻

🐾 Millie's biopsy results showed that she does NOT have cancer! Her tumors are benign!!
It is rare for mammary tumors in cats to be benign, and her vet was convinced that her case was hopeless. What a lucky lady Millie is! Of course, there is the FeLV issue still, but at least she's fine for now. We'll go back to the vet in 1.5 months to decide whether she also needs surgery on the other side. In the meantime, she's safe and well, albeit quite lonely, as she remains isolated because of the FeLV.

🐾 Harry's latest blood test results showed improvement against all expectations! His vet insisted that he would need a second transfusion within days, and yet!
Harry's getting treatment for almost all possible causes of anemia, but his vet believed that the problem was caused by FIV attacking the bone marrow, which is fatal. However, it appears that this may not be the case and that one (or more) of the treatments is working. The improvement is small, but it is there, and we can now be cautiously optimistic!

🐾 Babi is also recovering from the struvite crystal ordeal, but slowly, and he remains in constant distress because of it.
He's no longer in danger at least. I don't know how other cats go through this, and this was the first time one of my cats developed struvite crystals, but it is horrible. Apart from being fatal when the urinary tract is blocked, it is also extremely painful. This condition is especially common among neutered male cats who are fed dry food and don't drink enough water; a predisposition toward developing crystals also plays a role. I have stopped giving dry food to everyone after this, both strays outside and fosters jnside. They only get a bit of dry as a snack. Sure, it's more expensive this way, but they won't die in agony.

Kind reminder that last month's trouble has left a deficit quickly approaching €800, with more to come in January, as the med costs and vet bills continue to accumulate. Any help will be very much appreciated ❀️

Time for a Harry update.

Harry received a blood transfusion on Tuesday with the help of Zoe, who volunteered her wonderful furbaby, Melenia, as a blood donor. The procedure went well; Harry's temperature rose impressively almost immediately after, he has a huge appetite, eating all day, and he's alert, active, and happy.

We still don't know exactly what caused this emergency, so he's getting medication for bartonellosis, FIP, and an autoimmune disorder. On the surface, he seems to be responding wonderfully; however, today's blood test showed that his hematocrit is only 13, which is better than the previous 7.5 but still dangerously low. Therefore, he might need a second blood transfusion 😒

The associated vet bills have so far come to €605, with €350 having been covered with very much appreciated donations ❀️

In addition, there has so far been another €400 for medication, special diet food, supplements, and transport to the vet clinics. The GS-441524 for the FIP alone costs €200, so it all adds up pretty quickly.

There is still €655 missing to balance the scales if anyone would like to continue supporting my efforts to help Harry 😊

Harry is currently hospitalized at Iasis Zoon fighting for his life.

He has extreme anemia with a hematocrit of 7.5 and has reached hypothermia. I've found a blood donor and will proceed with the blood transfusion tomorrow morning.

His chances are slim, and we still don't know the exact cause of his condition. The first priority is to survive the emergency, and then we can start looking for the root of the problem (most probably a complication of his FIV, but could also be something else like FIP or a blood parasite).

This is yet another unplanned vet bill, and it's going to be quite substantial. I really really need some support with this emergency.

Please help Harry!

There has been much cat trouble the past couple of days.

🐾 The only good news: the girls, Circe, Demi, and Terri, were vaccinated on Friday, and all three tested negative for FIV and FeLV. They have returned to their foster with Chantale and are eagerly waiting for adoption offers! 😻

🐾 Harry joined the girls' appointment on Friday as an emergency because he was not feeling well at all. He's FIV+, and at some point, he had also received treatment for FIP, which was fully successful. We did blood tests and are waiting to see if it's a FIP recurrence or FIV progression. The vet also gave him antibiotics as a precaution.

The vet bill for these four furbabies was €227.5.

🐾 Charlotte also had to be urgently taken to the vet clinic on Saturday for a full check-up and medication, as she was vomiting and generally feeling alarmingly unwell. We did an x-ray and blood tests and are waiting for the results.

Charlotte's vet bill was €120.

🐾 Finally, Babi developed a urinary tract obstruction, which is a life-threatening situation. He's been in the clinic since Friday afternoon. He'll continue with IV fluid treatment at home when he's released because his kidneys have also been affected based on the first test results. We'll know more when the urine cultures are ready.

Babi's vet bill will be at least €180.

I'll make update posts for Harry, Charlotte, and Babi when I know more.

Would anyone like to help with these wonderful vet bills that came out of nowhere right on time for New Year?

If you can, please do! Any help would be immensely appreciated ❀️

Happy holidays from the sweetest boy!

If we're lucky, and nothing weird happens, Mango's will be the last vet appointment of the year.

Mango has had trouble with his eyes and teeth for a long time and had been patiently waiting to enter foster care and receive treatment for months while taking cortisone, but there was always someone with more urgent problems taking his place on the queue.

His turn has come, however, as he can no longer eat even with the medication. He'll see the vet this Friday for assessment and to schedule his surgery for the beginning of next year. He's already had blood tests, and all results were excellent. Therefore, we can be hopeful that after treatment, he'll be perfectly ready to find his forever home 😊

Mango is the cuddliest furbaby who always tries to climb up for hugs and kisses even when he's in so much pain that he hasn't eaten for days. He's also adorably cute with all his fluffiness and his tiniest of meows 😻

Good luck little Mango!

The baby girls, rescued a few weeks ago and currently fostered with Chantale, have names!

Introducing Terri, Demi, and Circe! 😻

I have a vet appointment for them on Friday 27/12 for their first vaccination and FIV/FeLV testing. They can start looking for their forever homes right after!

Please consider helping with their vet bill, which will be €150 for all three 🧑

This is a random picture from last year of five neighborhood strays getting a bit of food. All five ended up in need of urgent rescue since then for representative reasons of what it means to live as a stray cat in Athens.

1. Millie: attacked and injured by humans, FeLV, cancer

2. Moby: dry FIP, liver damage, lost teeth, FIV

3. Bayou: every type of infection a cat can get, including pneumonia, FIV, bad case of stomatitis

4. Philomena: attacked and injured by humans, shock, stomatitis

5. Doko Jin (or his tail at least): badly infected blind eye that needed removal, respiratory and ear infections

All five furbabies required long and, in some cases, very expensive treatment to recover, and all (except Millie) can now live happily ever after if they find their own forever homes. They are the lucky ones.

Cats have evolved to hide their weaknesses for reasons of self-protection, and they usually must be in a truly terrible state to let themselves look sick. There is a general belief that a stray has a life expectancy of 2-3 years, when a housecat can live for more than 20 years. This is no myth.

So, the cute and healthy looking kitty you will see begging for food in the Athenian neighborhoods is actually in a constant struggle to survive. Apart from being pestered by all kinds of parasites, they are threatened by human cruelty, speeding cars, deadly diseases, hunger, thirst, extreme weather both in summer and winter, and attacks by other animals. They are hardly ever truly healthy at any one time.

Cats, as so many other fellow species, have paid a heavy price for our urbanized, alienated, overconsumerist societies. They have been left outside with the garbage and are often treated just as such. Most volunteers trying to help in Athens and other similar cities are exhausted and overwhelmed, and the tide seems never ending.

Please read Millie’s story

Millie was trapped, neutered, and returned to the neighborhood back in May. All went well at that time, and she was patiently waiting her turn for a fostering opportunity since then.

One Sunday morning at the end of September, I could not find her at the regular feeding hour, which was odd because she was always there. I looked around and saw her a bit down the road with her head against a wall, motionless. At first, I thought she was somehow stuck, but after gently moving her, she started going around in circles, dazed and unable to balance (clear signs of neurological damage). The fur on her back had been destroyed by an acid attack. I immediately took her to the emergency clinic, where she received first aid and treatment. She also tested positive for FeLV and remained in complete isolation during her recovery.

Millie managed to survive; by the beginning of November, she could eat by herself, had a healthy appetite, and her coordination was back. The entire patch of destroyed skin on her back was shed, and new skin and hair emerged. It was time to leave her isolation and find a temporary foster home, where she could remain until her second FeLV test to confirm that diagnosis.

Lucy stepped up and offered a wonderful month of peace and loving care to Millie, but time does fly, and this past Wednesday, Millie was back to the clinic. Her blood tests were good, but she tested positive for FeLV again, and the vet found three large tumors protruding from her mammary glands. Perhaps, there are several more, smaller ones.

These tumors are very fast growing, as they were not noticeable only a month ago, and are causing Millie considerable distress. Millie will have surgery to remove and biopsy the tumors as soon as possible (hopefully, this coming week). Her prognosis is not good, as the tumors are probably cancerous (FeLV causes cancer). However, she should not suffer during the time she has left.

She’s now again completely isolated but in a big, sunny room of her own with all comforts and a couple of hours of human company each day. She is doing well, eating well, and generally relaxing. Millie is still young, maybe 3 years old. She managed to survive life in the streets for years, she managed to overcome a horrendous attack, and yet, it seems, she has very little time left to live. It does sound quite unfair.

Scheduling her surgery is urgent, as the tumors are growing fast and causing increasing discomfort. Moreover, her general condition may deteriorate because of the leukemia, making surgery no longer possible. The total cost will be about €300. If you can help even a bit, please do.

Moby is out of the cage for the first time since April! I really hope he'll never have to go back in ❀️

His chances of adoption are very close to zero, as he is a FIP survivor, positive for FIV, and 10+ years old. He's also very shy with humans and only approaches me when he has reason to believe that there may be snacks involved. Wisdom comes with old age 🀭
