The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to rehabilitate and rehome stray animals in the Chania prefecture.

Economically challenged, our organization carefully and skillfully meets the needs of every temporary inhabitant in our space. Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that

she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

He has been with us forever.

Luca is shy and he is timid and he runs away at the sight of someone even glancing towards him.

He has been with us forever, really.
Next year will be TEN YEARS he has been at the shelter. And the first of those ten years were horrible.

But not anymore.
Long gone are those horrible days.
Luca is meek. Luca is highly sensitive.
He would not hurt a fly.

Luca has never had the chance to go.
He was never considered by anyone to be their dog.
Everyone wants the fun pup, the outgoing dog, the pretty dog. Luca doesn’t fit to those standards.
He is adorable, to us.

Luca had a brother and a sister.
His brother passed last year at the shelter.
His sister Alice was adopted years ago and she was even MORE timid than Luca. When you would look at Alice, she was so terrified, she would defecate.
One day an angel of a woman walked into the shelter and asked for the most difficult dog to rehome and she adopted her.
Alice lives in Finland and is known as the Naked Ballerina. She loves to run outside without a coat and she dances.

We wish Luca would have such luck.

We think that Luca has accepted that the shelter is his home.
We also think that sometimes, when no one is watching, he is having a good time.
This is what we tell ourselves not to be sad.

This video, which one of the caretakers secretly took, proves it.

Even Bailey (right, reserved) can’t believe his eyes – that gorgeous Dillamond is still here, waiting for his family.

Dillamond is a young, social, playful, and affectionate boy.
He might need just a minute to get to know you, but once he does, his loving nature shines through.
The main reason he’s still at the shelter is his stamp: “Leish positive.”

Please remember: dogs with Leishmaniasis often face extra challenges finding a home. But with early detection and proper treatment – just like in Dillamond’s case – they can live long, happy, and fulfilling lives.

Take a chance on our Dr. Dillamond.
We’re sure you’ll be just as amazed as Bailey is!

Who’s that?
It’s Nero - the boy with the most beautiful eyes!😍

In the past, a few people have shown interest in him, but in the end, the choice has always fallen on another dog.
And while we’re truly happy for every dog who finds a loving home, our hearts break a little extra for our sweet Nero!💔

His name means “water” in Greek, because he and his six siblings were found and brought to us by the kind people from the water company when they were just tiny pups.

Today, Nero is a handsome young boy, around one year old, neutered and waiting for his turn! Most of his siblings have already left the shelter.

Nero is a social, calm and overall super playful and affectionate boy, always happy to get your attention and some cuddles.

Medium-to-large in size and weighing around 28 kg, Nero is the perfect balance of strong and gentle.

Can you picture him by your side as your best friend for life?

Give Nero the chance of a lifetime!❤️

Meet Gia!❤️

Gia is a very special young cat.
She came to us as a tiny kitten and moved from foster home to foster home, never able to settle down for good.
Now, at around two years old, she’s still waiting for her forever family.

Gia is a funny, playful girl with a unique personality. She loves hair ties and will even bring them back to you — just like a little dog! She also enjoys playing with her toys and cuddling her stuffed animals.
Having grown up with both cats and dogs, she gets along well with them.
That said, Gia would also be perfectly happy as an only pet, since she doesn’t like rough play.

She has only lived indoors, but recently started exploring the outdoors on a leash. Gia loves being outside, though she can be a little too fearless at times and doesn’t always recognize danger in general — so supervision is important.

At home, Gia is easy-going. She doesn’t cause trouble and her days are happily filled with playing, eating, sleeping and snuggling. She loves curling up on top of you or right next to you, but she also enjoys her independence. For this reason, Gia would do best in a calm household, without young children.

As a kitten, Gia suffered an injury to her back leg and later underwent hip surgery. While you can still notice it, it doesn’t slow her down — she can do anything any other cat can.

Gia is currently in foster care in Germany, but unfortunately, once again, she can’t stay there much longer.

Please consider giving beautiful Gia the forever home she truly deserves.
Be the one to finally see and appreciate this amazing girl!

Looking to adopt a senior?

Kanellos is the senior you are looking for.

He used to be king of the streets in Chania in his younger years.

Now he is at a stage in his life where he is happy with a soft bed, loads of blankets, brushing, kisses and cuddles.

Yes, this previous gangster has turned soft and we love him that way.

This guy is the coolest!

Nine more souls added to our big beautiful family.

Eight babies and the mom will be coming into the shelter ASAP!
The mom was making daily trips along the very busy airport road and we were afraid we might lose her.
So we had to take them in today!
That’s a lot of baby!

We’re going to start weaning them off of Mom because her milk is not enough and we’re going to need lots of good baby food. Maybe you can help?

Please find our donation information below🔽

We will be looking for names for the babies, so start thinking because finding names that we haven’t used yet is very difficult!
The mom has been named by the Foster and although it’s been used before we’re spelling it differently… she is KLOE.

Okeanos ❤️

This striking black-and-white beauty is 1 year old and weighs around 23kg.

Abandoned as a puppy and yet he wasn’t as lucky as his sisters - Okeanos is still with us.

Growing up in the shelter means the outside world is still a bit unfamiliar to him. New people, new places- they might make him a little insecure at first. But behind that initial shyness lies a heart full of love, just waiting to bloom🌸

Okeanos is an energetic dog who is also able to calm down quickly and enjoys attention.
He’s integrated into a large group of dogs and never caused any trouble.
He would benefit from having a second dog but that’s not a requirement; he would also be happy on his own.
A more rural environment and people who are eager to explore the world with him, enjoy new adventures, and guide him through training with patience and enthusiasm would be perfect for him.

Rocco❤️

Look at that face!
His personality is full of goofiness and fun!
He is 1 year 9 months old and weighs 21kg.

Rocco was picked up from a local coffee shop last year. He was covered in bite marks when he came to the shelter. What could have gone on with this animal to have been subjected to such abuse?
You wouldn’t know it though, if his scars wouldn’t be so apparent because his heart says otherwise. He’s incredibly friendly with humans and just adores attention.
He hasn’t shown any disturbances in his characters from his dark past.

He has a lot of energy and loves to play with his girlfriend Lucky.
He needs mental and physical stimulation but above all he must also learn to calm down.
He’s familiar with walking on a leash and knows some basics like sit or to wait for his food.

Heidi🤍

She’s one of the cats who lives outside around our shelter and has been with us for quite some time now. She’s neutered, around 6 years old and we recently took her in because she had problems with her teeth. In two surgeries they removed all of her teeth’s because they were inflamed. Since May, she lives inside and enjoys human attention. She would deserve to get cuddles all day long but we’re not able to give her what she truly deserves.

A real home❤️

She’s a quiet, sensitive cat who’s extremely friendly and mastered all the vet visits perfectly.

While her FeLV test came back negative, she was tested positive for FiV.
She currently gets treated because of inflamed areas on her gums but we already made a huge progress.

Apart from that she’s a loving and social cat, she was always seen with her best friends Jekyll and Utterson. Utterson sadly passed away last month🖤
Jekyll is also looking for a loving home and they could get adopted together.

Open your heart and your home for these beauties🤍

✨Cosima✨

She’s our little Christmas miracle as she and her siblings arrived around Christmas 2023.
Since then, she’s been waiting.
She grew up.
She saw her brother leave, then her sister.
But she stayed.💔
Days turned into weeks, weeks into months… and still, nobody seems to notice the absolute treasure she is.

That’s not just heartbreaking - it’s a shame.

Cosima is a shepherd mix and embodies all the best traits of her breed:
She’s incredibly people-oriented, loyal and eager to please. Cosima will do almost anything for a treat, which makes her a joy to train.

She gets along well with her friends, though she can be dominant by nature.
And yes - she can get a little jealous if she’s not getting her fair share of attention.

As you can probably tell, Cosima absolutely LOVES our volunteers, her cuddle sessions are always the highlight of her day. They’re definitely each other’s emotional support!😜

Cosima is a sassy queen, ready to follow you through life and devote herself entirely to you. Nothing would make her happier than receiving all the love and attention she dreams of every single day - something she simply can’t get in the shelter.

She’s almost 2 years old now and weighs around 24kg.

Are you ready for a lifelong best friend, cuddle partner and adventure buddy?
Consider beautiful Cosima.❤️🏡

Our Story

Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way. Thank you.
