The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to maintain and rehome 250 plus animals which have been abandoned for a second time in their lives.

Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

Meet REINA!
Reina just joined us at the shelter. She’s about 10 months old and a real treasure. Let us tell you, anyone lucky enough to adopt her will be bringing home a true diamond in the rough!💎

We found Reina a few weeks ago, tied up outside the shelter early one morning. Despite her rough start, she’s a playful and joyful young lady who immediately made friends with everyone.

Day by day, Reina is gradually gaining confidence. She’s very attached to people and always eager for pets and affection from anyone willing to give it❤️

Reina is a wonderful addition to our dog group, bringing a fresh burst of energy with her playful and carefree nature. Even our usually more serious guys can’t resist joining in the fun with her from time to time😊

NYX IS ADOPTED!!!!!♥️

Our best boy, Nyx!
NYX is a two-year-old shepherd mix. Not only is Nyx stunningly beautiful, but he also has a heart of gold 💛

Maybe he's too good to be true? We can't understand why nobody wants to give this wonderful dog a chance.

Nyx is super social with other dogs, gets along with everyone, and never causes trouble. The ladies, the pups, the juniors, his buddies, and of course, we – everybody adores him! You simply have to love Nyx! ❤️

Nyx was abandoned as a tiny pup along with his three siblings about two years ago. While all of them have found loving homes, he is still waiting for his forever family💔

Nyx is a little shy at first and will need some time to get used to a new environment, but he will be the most loyal and grateful companion you could possibly ask for.

You may not like Mondays but we love ours!
MONDAY is one of the last ‘Days’ pups still at the shelter. Why?

He’s healthy. Both mentally and physically. Monday has had excellent puppy development and now he’s a healthy junior!

He’s always smiling. Monday brightens any space with his presence. Not to mention he is welcomed by everyone, people and animals because he’s an easy guy.

WAVERLY checked into the Souda Shelter Apartments with her entire family, including her mom, dad(most likely), three sisters, and one brother!

While her sisters have either already found loving homes or are about to leave soon, Waverly and her brother Dawson are still waiting for their forever families 💔

Waverly is just as adorable and loving as her siblings and a real water enthusiast 😄 (see comments for videos!👇🏻)

🥕🍅🥦Meet Our Veggies🥦🍅🥕

Do you remember ZUCCHINI and BROKKOLI, the two brindle bully mixes that were abandoned outside the shelter about three weeks ago? Well, make it FIVE!😱

Two weeks later, their siblings were abandoned just a few meters further. How do we know it's their siblings? Well, see for yourself!

Why the late arrival for the other three, you might wonder? We suspect that they tried to sell the remaining siblings and only abandoned them at our doorstep when their plans didn't work out..

Now, we are on the lookout for big dog enthusiasts because these cute faces will grow a little taller!😁 If you have room in your heart and home for a loving companion, consider adopting one of these sweet hearts! ❤️

We have three girls—ZUCCHINI, BROKKOLI, and PAPRIKA—and two boys—KÜRBIS (meaning "Pumpkin") and CHICORÉE.
Each one is as lovable as they could possibly be 😍

SELINI enjoying golden hour at the shelter with her buddies Lilou and Oscar ❤️ What a beauty she is!

Selini is a wonderful medium-sized dog, approximately four years old. She is super friendly with people and great with other dogs. She's sweeter than sugar 😊❤️

All her life, Selini was tied to a very small chain. She was always hungry, not fed every day, and when she was, she only received scraps and leftovers. Water was a luxury. The place she lived in was always dirty with f***s.

She's been with us for about half a year, but we think she deserves to finally experience the love and comfort of a loving home. What do you think? If you agree, please help us find this sweet girl a family of her own🙏🏻

We can't believe that all of Moira's babies are still with us!

ROLAND and JOHNNY are two of four siblings who have been with us for almost half a year now 💔

FREYA the cat that was hit by a car the day before Christmas is still looking for a loving home💔

Freya is a sensitive cat. She loves peace and quiet, she enjoys retreating to her own space and hardly makes her presence known. However, when her favorite human is nearby, she loves to receive affection from them, and at night, she loves to sleep next to them❤️

Currently, Freya lives in a foster home with other cats and a dog. She gets along fine with the dog and tolerates the cats out of necessity, but it seems that she could easily do without them. She can certainly be kept as an indoor/outdoor cat if the conditions are right.

In her current foster home she never goes far. She prefers to stay right in front of the house, chilling on the terrace and following her foster mom so she doesn't miss feeding time 😉

Her foster is leaving Crete soon and can't take her with her. Therefore we are looking for a quiet and empathetic home for Freya, with plenty of places for her to retreat and without small children.

Freya has fully recovered from her injuries after being hit by a car and has tested negative for FIV and FeLV.

Bella and Brave❤️

Hallo liebe Tierfreunde,
wie der Zufall es will haben sich unsere ehemaligen Schützlinge aus dem Soudashelter "Teddy"-alias Brave und "Bella" in Erkrath in der Hundeschule Vogt getroffen und trainieren seitdem fleißig jeden Samstag gemeinsam ihren Spürsinn beim Nasenspaß. Es wird gemeinsam getrailt, apportiert und gestöbert. Im Anschluss dürfen Teddy und Bella als Belohnung natürlich ausgiebig miteinander toben während sich ihre Frauchen Tanja und Katarzyna über ihre Vierbeiner amüsieren 🐾❤️🐾

Largest turn out ever! When NSA says they will support, well yes they do!
Thank you to everyone who came out to have a look see, to help feed, to meet our pooches.

On Saturday, February 25, 2019 two shifts of volunteers from NSA Souda Bay participated in a comrel at the Souda Shelter Project. The project consisted of feeding animals, playing and socializing with them as well as opening food packages.

Our wonderful JEMMA was abandoned with her three pups on a cold and rainy day at the end of 2022. Since then, she has been waiting for the right person to come along💔 Jemma is beautiful. Jemma is smart. Jemma is sensitive. The shelter environment makes her depressed, on some days, she won't eat at all. Jemma is happiest when she gets to play with her besties, Nyx and Pistachio, or when she gets lots of human attention❤️ She loves endless cuddles, walking next to her favorite human, and car rides. Whenever there's a chance, she jumps into the car, hoping it's finally her turn to go home. OCEAN has had a rough start in life. When he was just a little kitten, he was found with a severe eye infection. Ocean had to have his right eye fully removed, and his left eye also suffered some permanent damage. But this does not hold him back at all! Ocean is a happy, playful young cat who gets around just fine in his familiar surroundings. He loves playing and especially enjoys spending time with his sister, Pearl. They would make a great pair if adopted together. Ocean is also good with dogs. Other than his vision issues, Ocean is healthy, neutered, vaccinated, and has tested negative for FIV and FeLV. Since then, he's been patiently waiting for his chance to shine and find a loving home but has remained unseen💔 Though Twig is an absolute dream dog! He's funny, active, social, and a big cuddler. Now weighing around 17 kg and nearly fully grown, Twig's playful spirit and affectionate personality make him a perfect addition to any loving family! 🌟RUDI 🌟 What a funny guy! Rudi is an energetic and playful charmer, about one year old. He's very people-oriented, incredibly affectionate, and food-motivated😉 When called by his name, Rudi comes running right away♥️ Over the past few months, Rudi's communication skills have improved a lot. He has become much more social with the other dogs at the shelter and loves to run and romp around with his buddies. Rudi was surrendered last autumn along with another female we named Sugar. Before coming to us, he lived with people who loved him but couldn't properly care for him. Most of the time, Rudi roamed the streets on his own. Our Story

Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way.
