The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to maintain and rehome 250 plus animals which have been abandoned for a second time in their lives.

and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

🪷Soraya🪷 So—who? SORAYA!
If you’ve ever visited the shelter, you’ve probably... never met her at all 😞

Soraya came to us in 2021, along with her three babies—Athos, Aramis, and Porthos. She was rescued from a life on a chain. Frightened and timid, yet fiercely protective of her puppies, Soraya slowly began to blossom in her own quiet way.

Soraya's still a shy girl, but once she trusts you, she’ll let you into her small, special world—and it’s truly one of the most rewarding feelings ever. Soraya enjoys belly rubs when the timing and setting feel right. She also loves to play with her dog friends when she feels safe.

Soraya is calm, quiet, clean, and never destructive. She adores soft blankets and her sofa ❤️ One of our caretakers lovingly nicknamed her “Her Majesty”— because that’s exactly how she acts sometimes—a little like a queen, or a bit of a diva 😉

Soraya walks well on a leash but is sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements.

For Soraya, we’re looking for a peaceful home with patient, empathetic humans who will let her come out of her shell at her own pace. No small children. She enjoys the company of other dogs, and a friendly, confident resident dog would be a huge plus!

📏 Soraya is approx. 5 years old, weighs about 17 kg, and is about 50 cm tall.

✨Meet XAVIER✨

Xavier is one of the pups who were found when they were just a few days old—bottle-fed and lovingly raised in a foster home. At around 6 months old, he and his siblings came to the shelter.

At almost 10 months old, Xavier is more than ready to start a new chapter in his life.
He’s a small-to-medium-sized young boy, weighing around 10kg.

Xavier is active, playful, and full of joy! He’s also extremely social, affectionate, and trusting—thanks to growing up in a home environment with people, dogs and even cats.

He absolutely loves his playtime and is perfectly integrated into a large group of dogs. Running, playing, cuddling, snuggling—Xavier does it all. Bottle-raised, he has a deep bond with humans and shows endless affection to those around him.

✨Arabica✨

Arabica was just a little pup, sitting outside a coffee shop, when she was picked up and brought to the shelter.
That’s when she was given the name Arabica - after the coffee.☕️

Arabica is most likely the sister of Demitasse and just like her, she’s blossomed into a truly beautiful young dog.
And yet, somehow, Arabica and her sister have become nearly invisible.
It’s time she finally got the attention she deserves.

Here’s what you really need to know about our Arabica:

She is around one year old now - still young, full of energy and always ready to play with her best friends.

Arabica finds so much joy in running, playing and getting into a bit of harmless mischief now and then (😜), but she also knows when to settle down. She has a calm side and loves a good chill session just as much as playtime.

Arabica absolutely LOVES people. She enjoys her regular cuddles with our volunteers, it’s the best part of her day!❤️

She’s very intelligent and super quick to pick up new things too.

Arabica is a medium-sized shepherd mix - beautiful inside and out.

Urgently seeking a loving home for our beautiful LEMONADE! 🍋🐾

Lemonade is an absolute sweetheart🩷 She’s always seeking affection and loves nothing more than curling up next to you—or right on top of you—for a nap. Just looking at her gets her purring!

But don’t be fooled by her snuggly side—Lemonade is still young, curious, and bursting with playful energy. She loves to run, jump, and explore, so we’re looking for a home with another playful cat companion to help keep her active and happy.

🐾 Lives currently in a foster home with other cats and a dog and gets along well with them.

Meet SCOTT — living proof that lapdogs don’t have to be small❤

Scott—or Scottiiiiiii— loves nothing more than climbing onto people's laps for some quality snuggle time and we absolutely love seeing this side of him now, because things looked quite different in the beginning.

When Scott and his brother were found abandoned in front of the shelter last summer, Scott wasn’t thrilled about humans at all. Extremely reserved and shy, everything was scary at first—especially people.

But over time, Scott has made amazing progress. Once he overcame his initial shyness, he began to truly enjoy human attention and now follows staff and volunteers around everywhere.

Scott gets along beautifully with other dogs—regardless of gender, age, or size. He’s a social butterfly at heart and loves playing, romping around with his buddies, taking naps in the shade, and—of course—soaking up all the cuddles he can get!

For Scott, we’re looking for a home with kind-hearted people who will give him the time he needs to feel safe and show him just how good life can be❤️

Scott is currently about one year old with a shoulder height of 45–50 cm. He is neutered and weighs around 18 kg.

Who’s that beauty?
It’s TWIG! Aka Twiggles😍

The forgotten brother of the floral five. His four sisters have already found loving homes, but somehow, he was left behind💔

Born in July 2023, Twig will soon turn 2 years old.
Almost all of that time spent in the shelter.

We have no explanation for that.
Twig is an absolute gem, a hidden treasure just waiting to be discovered.
He’s very social with other dogs and absolutely ADORES people!

Twig is always seeking human attention, trying to find love wherever he goes.
He does the cutest little dances and makes sweet noises just to get you to notice him.
If it were up to Twig, he’d spend the whole day in your arms, soaking up every bit of love and affection he can get.

Sadly, it just hasn’t worked out for him so far. Maybe it’s the color of his fur, combined with him being male - we don’t know.
All we know is that it’s such a shame!
We just KNOW, Twig will make someone out there incredibly happy.

He weighs around 18 kg and is a medium-sized dog. Playful, energetic, funny, affectionate and just so sweet - Twig truly is the whole package!

✨OLY✨

Oly was found along with his five siblings when they were just a few days old and had to be bottle-fed.
He was lucky enough to spend the first few months of his life in foster care along with his siblings, other dogs and also cats.

Now Oly is around 9 months old and is staying at the shelter.
He gets along well with other dogs and loves his playtime in the yard.
Oly is a young, funny dog who adores human attention.
He is open, friendly and would be the perfect addition to any active family.

He is small to medium sized and weighs approximately around 10kg.

Here he comes! Make some room for TERU❤️

Teru is the little pup who was found on the street very close to the shelter.
He was picked up by Amelie and brought to safety.

He’s about 5 months old now (born in December 2024) and is the cutest, silliest little boy😜

Teru is super funny and just an absolute joy to have around. He loves running and playing with his buddies and he does the cutest little dances just for you.
Teru could also spend hours curled up in your lap - he’s so sweet and loving!

Give this little goofball the chance at a fresh start🏡❤️

REINA was abandoned and tied to the shelter fence in the summer of last year. She was recently adopted by a loving family, but once in a home environment, Reina began to show the typical Shepherd traits, and her needs proved to be more than the family was prepared for.
As a result, she is once again looking for her forever home💔

Reina embodies everything that makes Shepherds so special: intelligence, loyalty, and a deep instinct to protect and bond with her people. Like any true Shepherd, she displays the classic traits of the breed—a strong desire to have a “job,” a natural instinct to guard her home and loved ones, and a tendency to take control if clear boundaries aren’t established.

Reina is quick to learn, eager to please, and happiest when she has structure and purpose. She will thrive in an active household that can provide both mental and physical stimulation.

Because of her protective and observant nature, she needs a home with someone experienced in typical Shepherd behavior. She gets along well with other dogs but may try to take charge if not given the right guidance and boundaries. Her new home should be one without small children.

Melvin - our little shelter boss😍

Melvin is the last of Harper’s puppies still waiting at the shelter and just like his mom, he’s hoping to find his forever home.

Why he hasn’t been adopted yet is something we’ll never understand. Melvin may be small in size - just 11 kg and 30 cm tall - but he has a personality that fills the room!
He’s about 1 year and 8 months old (born in September 2023) and has been with us since he was just a tiny pup.

If you’ve ever visited the shelter, you have definitely met our Melvin!
He’s always nearby, looking for cuddles and kisses.

Little Melvin is a funny fella, either in the middle of the action or just happy to nap in the sun or preferably in your lap.

Melvin is very social with other dogs and enjoys playing and running with them in the yard and on the playground.

Five adorable puppies, ready to explore the world and find a place in your heart!

Inspired by the beloved characters from “The Magic Roundabout”, these three girls (Ermintrude, Zebedee, Aza) and two boys (Flap, Dougal) are looking for a loving forever home.🏡

They were dumped in front of our shelter but now growing up well in our care.
They are curious, playful, and full of joy – our Tinies are sure to brighten your days.

They are currently about 2,5 months old and will probably stay small.

Our Story

Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way.
