The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to rehabilitate and rehome stray animals in the Chania prefecture.

Economically challenged, our organization carefully and skillfully meets the needs of every temporary inhabitant in our space. Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that

she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

Elphaba❤️

Elphaba was abandoned as a puppy with her siblings Dr. Dillamond, Boq and Fiyero- all of them still looking for their forever home.
She’s now almost 1 1/2 years old and a beautiful junior dog who weighs around 15kg.

Elphaba has so much to give but she is easily overlooked because she needs a little time to trust and get to know you. Once she does she is affectionate, friendly, playful and happy. She can’t wait for a family of her own where she can finally enjoy the world outside of the shelter!
She is food motivated and therefore eager to learn.
And did you see her white front paw?
Like she is wearing just one sock and forgot about the rest😂

How is it possible that sweet Demitasse (left) and Arabica (right) are still waiting after all this time?

They’re 1 year and 3 months old – and have spent almost their entire lives in the shelter without receiving a single application.
It truly breaks our hearts, because these girls are absolutely amazing.

Affectionate, playful, funny and deeply people-oriented – Demitasse and Arabica have it all. They adore human company and light up around people.❤️

Our sweet LUCKY hasn’t been very lucky so far.

It’s hard to understand why this beautiful girl keeps getting overlooked, because she truly has so much to offer.

Lucky is the star of the show - the one who brings dogs together and creates a beautiful dynamic of playfulness, calmness and respect in every group. She’s a true social butterfly who gets along with every dog she meets.🦋

And with people?
She absolutely adores them!🥰
Lucky loves human attention and affection just as much as time with her buddies.

She walks nicely on a leash, knows some basic commands and is ready to shine in a loving home of her own.

✨Scrolling back in disbelief that we haven’t introduced this handsome boy yet!✨

Better late than never – meet AXEL😍

Axel is one of three remaining brothers (his siblings Nash and Beckett complete the trio). They came to us as tiny pups and have spent their whole lives in the shelter. Born in May 2024, Axel is now just under 1.5 years old. He’s medium-sized and weighs around 18 kg.

Just like his brothers, Axel is very people-oriented and absolutely loves all the affection and attention he can get.❤️
 He’s a social boy, though large groups of dogs can sometimes overwhelm him. He much prefers spending time with his closest friends (like our sweet Alexia🥰).

Axel is wishing for a forever home with caring people who will give him the time, love and patience he needs to adjust. He still has to learn what life outside a shelter (and in a home) is like and with gentle guidance he will gain the confidence and trust he needs to truly thrive.
In short: He’s looking for people who will love him unconditionally – just the way he is!
He’s also very food-motivated, which makes him easy and fun to train.

Baby Dandelion is a favorite.

We named her first, before her siblings Yogi, Bear, Booboo, Mookie and Ranger.
We named her first because she was the runt of the litter, teeny tiny, but such a strong little girl who always kept up with the others.
Tough, like a dandelion which manages to grow even through city sidewalks.

She is precious♥️

If you have been to Souda Square, you know Daisy.
Daisy is the local old lady hound that rests, eats and sleeps at the square.
Supposedly everyone loves her.
Supposedly everyone cares for her.
Until she is injured and hands must go into their pockets, then sadly, she is no one’s dog.
She is a stray.

We received a phone call one morning that there was an injured dog at the square that needed help. We asked if it was one of the regulars. “No, just a stray”.
And this was from the cafe that had “housed” her for so many years.
We asked for a photo so as to know who we are looking for and they sent us Daisy.

“That’s Daisy! Why did you just call her a stray! Years ago when we wanted to take her from the square you yelled and insisted we not touch her! That you all loved her and would care for her!
We will of course pick her up but please, we are a non profit, can you collect any funding so that we can cover her costs?”
Dead at the other end of the line….

Daisy was attacked by another dog.
We don’t know when or who or how.
All we are allowed to know is that she was injured and that we must help.

It has now been 3 months since Daisy came into our care.
She has made good progress, though we’re not at the end of her recovery yet.
But Daisy is enjoying life now; cuddles, cooling mats and she has even started to lie on her very own bed❤️
Step by step she’s settling in and finding comfort.
Daisy is around 9 years old and weighs 27kg.

Any room in your heart for an overweight, old hound?
She is docile and just wants comfort and care.

These are human eyes.
Casper is such an old soul.
Don’t be mistaken, he is not an old dog, he is an old soul.
He is kind, to everyone.
His beautiful little smile highlighted by white hair.
He is so very sweet and loving and adores his humans.

A funny medium-sized dog, around 16kg, with the fate of being overlooked like so many black dogs…
Casper is almost 3 years old, and after one year at the shelter he still has not received a single request.
Abandoned in front of the shelter, that’s where his story with us began.

Casper is a quiet and relaxed dog who loves people and loves to give hugs — he loves to be close to humans🥰.
A little reserved at the beginning, he quickly learns to trust, and you will get to know his great loving nature❤️.

He gets along great with other dogs, is used to walking on a leash, and is ready to find a home. Give him that chance!

These two are shelter favorites!🤩
Selena (brown, mom of the Nut Litter) and handsome Cretan Ichnilates, Azor.

Together they are a powerhouse duo.👑

Selena is deviously smart, she knows how to get what she wants and she expects it. Selena is a good animal who likes to be boss.
She needs a home that will appreciate her intellegence and give her the love she so deserves.

Azor is a bouncy, brilliant guy who opens latches and jumps meters in the air.
He is kind and good with any company.
He definitely loves action. He would be the perfect animal for mountain trekkers and active people.

Last night, while three people were inside the shelter, working hard to get the meds to our animals, to feed pups and to let animals out to play, a very disrespectful citizen/tourist (?) did not get anyone’s attention but sneakily ‘dropped off’ five babies covered in fleas in a very bad state.

Please don’t do this.
Speak with us.
Give us a chance to discuss the options, to fix a space, to figure out what is next.

The caretakers had begun their day at 7am.
At night, the schedule is tight and methodical, this is why we don’t accept visitors.
This surprise set them back.
They went home very late and very frustrated only to have to wake up again real early to go to work.

Please, although a far fetched plea, consider OTHERS beside yourself. Your actions harm others.

Our Story

Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way.
