The Souda Shelter Project

The Souda Shelter Project is a community whose goal is to rehabilitate and rehome stray animals in the Chania prefecture.

Economically challenged, our organization carefully and skillfully meets the needs of every temporary inhabitant in our space. Souda shelter in the Souda area of Chania, Crete was founded in by a well known animal activist of this area. In June of 2016, this "activist" without official notice but with a post to Facebook, cut off all ties with her shelter stranding 250 animals with the excuse that

she wished to downsize her obligations. The animals found themselves ONCE AGAIN abandoned in their lives, first by their owners and then this. They were left with NO security or plan. The Souda Shelter Project was founded by the workers of Souda Shelter who CANNOT walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter, a rather healthy environment. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to
1) maintain the same level of operations as before as pertaining to food supply and day to day living at the shelter.
2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now.
3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built.

Day 6- St. Nicholas Day✨🎄
On St. Nicholas Day, most boots are filled with chocolate… but behind today’s door, we have something even sweeter- our Boq❣️

Boq has had a long and winding journey, and he’s seen more ups and downs than any dog should have to. A few months ago, he had an accident and tore his Achilles tendon. He went through surgery, countless vet visits, and lots of crate rest.
Yet through it all, Boq stayed incredibly sweet and patient with everyone around him❤️‍🩹

The good news? He has made a full recovery and is now happy, playful, and full of life again.

Now just one thing is missing: a loving home to call his own❤️

It’s day 5! ✨
Who’s that beauty you want to know?

It’s Padmè 🤍
Padmè is a young, stunning shepherd mix who was found on the street a few months ago. Since then she has settled in beautifully at the shelter.

She truly is an angel 👼.
Padmè gets along with absolutely everyone – whether it’s our senior Kanello or dogs her own age.
Her very best friend is Sam (little spoiler: you’ll get to meet him behind another door…🤫).

Padmè is eager to learn and always wants to please her humans.
We’re genuinely surprised that no one has shown interest in this beautiful girl yet. She’s calm, friendly, affectionate, and has just the right mix of energy 🐾

Maybe this Christmas, someone will finally give Padmè the greatest gift of all- a loving forever home🎄

Here we are at Day 4✨- another quiet step toward Christmas❄️

Behind today’s door is someone truly special, someone who has touched many hearts❤️‍🩹
Meet Joseph, our wise and wonderful senior- the oldest resident of the shelter!

This year we’ve overcome several crises with him, but he recovered once again. He’s a stubborn old man, already 16 years old, who isn’t ready to go, and we’re so grateful for that☀️

He’s a little deaf, a little slower, and clearly aged- but he still longs for attention, loves his comfy mattress and of course: fooood❤️

Words can’t capture his gentle soul and wonderful personality, but one thing is certain: anyone lucky enough to meet him will be left with a lasting impression❤️

This Christmas, all we wish for is more time with him and many more healthy, happy days together❄️

It’s day 3! Today our Denver is in the spotlight❄️
Even though he doesn’t really like being the center of attention🙈

We posted him last year too, now he’s all grown up into a stunning beauty. What hasn’t changed is his fear- his fear of people, fear of new surroundings.

That’s also the reason why he was brought back after being adopted. Unfortunately, he’s once again looking for someone who can dedicate time, training and truly see him and the potential he has.

He’s cautious, he watches from a distance. But once you get past that shell, you’ll find a sensitive, gentle soul who’s quietly searching for someone with whom he can feel safe.

In the past weeks he’s getting consistent training. He’s slowly starting to open up- he now lets people he trusts touch him.

And with Wednesday, he has found an outgoing friend who helps him overcome his fears.
He’s even starting to play with her, no matter who is around❣️

It’s ✨tiiime✨again for the Souda Shelter project advent calendar! On day one, we introduce you to our beautiful little girl ❄️Dandelion❄️
This tiny 6kg sweetheart is bursting with life and curiosity!
Don’t let her size fool you- she has a big heart and an even bigger personality. She’s wonderfully integrated in a group of dogs her age. With her charming, cheeky spirit, she often becomes the little boss of the group.
Dandelion is now 6 months old and ready for her forever home. Could Dandelion be the one brighten your winter season ?🎄🐾

Best news of the year!
FAMILY REUNION 🥰
Momma and her 7 babies are together again.

The dog wouldn’t come within 10 meters of us.
While the puppies were safe at the shelter, it took almost a week until we were finally able to catch their mom as well.

But now they’re reunited- and momma is slowly learning to trust again❤️

A day to spotlight our beautiful black dogs ❤️

Many people don’t realize that black dogs often have a harder time getting adopted- not because they lack personality, but simply because they’re overlooked.
They’re “overlooked” for some simple reasons: their dark coats make it harder for them to stand out. Sometimes, even old myths still influence how people perceive black animals.
Yet some of the most loving, loyal, and wonderful dogs are black-coated companions waiting patiently for a home.

Black Dog Friday is our reminder to look twice, see their beauty, and give these amazing dogs the chance they deserve. 🐾

It feels a little ✨wicked✨ that sweet Fiyero is still waiting to this day!

Born in May 2024, Fiyero has grown up entirely in the shelter - together with his brothers Boq and Dillamond and his sister Elphaba.
This Wicked gang has yet to receive any applications💔

Fiyero is Leishmaniasis-positive, which sadly lowers his chances of finding a forever home. It breaks our hearts that being “Leish positive” is still such a dealbreaker for so many people - even though dogs like Fiyero show no symptoms at all and can live full, happy lives.

Since he has never known life outside the shelter, Fiyero is a little insecure at first and needs some time to warm up to new people and situations. But once he does, his playful, affectionate and goofy side shines through. He’s easily excited and finds pure joy in running and playing with his buddies. Fiyero is a young, energetic boy and gets along well with other dogs.

Beautiful inside and out - will this wicked-ly wonderful boy finally find the home he so deserves?

He weighs around 19kg and is medium-sized.

✨🎃Trick or Treat?🎃✨ For sweet Lemonade, it’s always treats! But more than anything, this beautiful girl is wishing for her forever home! 🧡

LEMONADE is ready to fill your life with love, joy, and just the right touch of mischief! 👻This young Greek beauty is playful, affectionate, and gets along great with both dogs and cats. There’s nothing spooky about her — she’s pure sweetness wrapped in fur!

🏡 Lemonade would love a home with another playful feline friend and access to a secure balcony or safe outdoor space.

✅ She has tested negative for FIV & FeLV

🦷 Her front teeth should be checked regularly and may need to be removed later if necessary.

While you were sleeping, we got new pups!
Yup, abandoned a couple of meters away from the shelter, at the junkyard, running on to the main road.
We had no other choice but to take them in otherwise it was certain death with the highway adjacent.

But a few days before this, we got another litter.
We have just named them. They are the Element litter and they are adorable, edible, squishable. They look like little bats with their ears standing. The Junkyard pups look like just that, Junkyard dogs.

We’ve lost count, or as they say here in Greece, “we’ve lost the ball…”

If you would like to help us, puppy food is a killer, we are feeding them Josera Family (mom and pup). You can pick up a bag from the pet shop ACROSS THE STREET from VIPS pet shop. We would appreciate it!

Abandoned, full of fleas, and in very poor condition. This is how the story of these five puppies began with us.

Now, a month later, look at these beauties!😍

Meet the four girls Breeze, Coral (reserved), Ember, Glen and their brother Meadow (their names are inspired by the elements of nature).

After such a difficult start in life, these playful and affectionate little souls are ready to discover the world. They are now looking for loving homes where they can grow up safe, happy and surrounded by care.

We are guessing that they are 2-3 months old.

Our Story

The Souda Shelter Project was founded by Elizabeth Iliakis, a previous helper at the Souda Shelter who could not walk away from these animals. Most all of these animals have spent a good portion of their lives in this shelter. They are clueless to the laws of the streets or fending for themselves. As the previous owner would just collect animals from the street and throw them into the shelter, Elizabeth got to know the animals personally and made it a goal to improve their lives and rehome them. The Souda Shelter Project has made it a goal to 1) create a healthy living environment for the animals living at the shelter which entails mental stimulation, routine veterinary check ups, drainage systems for waste, consultations with specialists pertaining to animal handling and behavior. 2) to rehome the greater majority of the animals residing at the shelter now. 3) close down the shelter which was established illegally and is structurally poorly and dangerously built. To build a new, legal, visitor friendly environment for both cats and dogs. We are a non profit organisation. At the moment we are down to 100 animals and would appreciate your help in any way.
