Here's the reality of what not brushing your dog does.
This sweet dog was so matted that the coat peeled off, still intact like a jumper.
So, why is matting so bad for your dog?
• Not only is it extremely uncomfortable and painful for your dog, it can also lead to other health concerns such as infections or skin irritations and can also mask other health issues or parasites.
• Matting can cut off circulation to your dog's skin and cause hematomas, it can also cut off the air flow in your dog's hair and can trap moisture, causing irritated skin which can encourage chewing and create hotspots or injuries from scratching.
• It makes the groom much less enjoyable and a lot more stressful, the safest and most humane way to remove the mats is to shave the dog's hair short as we have to get our blade under the mats to remove them as safely and less painful as possible. Shaving is not a groomers “short cut” to get the job done quickly, this can be a very slow, tedious and even dangerous process. Removing a heavily matted coat includes risks of nicks, cuts or abrasions due to warts, moles and skin folds trapped and hidden within the matted hair. Therefore, shaving a matted dog must be done slowly with utmost care.
• Please brush your dogs and if you ever need help with what to do in between appointments, reach out to your groomer, we're more than happy to help. Also, consider putting your dog on a 4-6-8 week schedule so that your dogs fur is maintained regularly which will help avoid mats, keeps your dog comfortable, keeps them clean and looking amazing.
