About the Before You Acquire A Dog course:

The ‘Evolution’ of Dog Behaviour and Training Services

For future, new as well as experienced dog owners. Are you are thinking of, planning or have already decided to acquire a puppy, adult or rescue dog? If the answer is `yes`, then the Before You Acquire A Dog online course is the service you`ve been looking for. You can start practicing /developing y

our handling skills, learn about the behavioural needs of your new comer and how you can better adapt them into your home environment, even if… you havn`t acquired them yet! Every dog owner needs guidance on what should be done in order to facilitate an easy life with their dogs. Therefore, among other things a dog owner will need to develop their handling and training skills, become aware of the dog’s behavioural needs, learn how to prioritise the delivery of the training tasks, and understand the catalytic role of their home environment’s unique characteristics. This guidance should ideally be provided some time before acquiring your new dog. The reason behind this golden rule is that as soon as you acquire a dog the clock is ticking and it is very difficult on the one hand to digest new information from experts and on the other hand to apply it successfully. Moreover, the dog is growing fast and your professional, family friends and other personal commitments inevitably restrict the time available to practice or think deeply about several dog behavioral aspects and issues. Nevertheless, the clock is ticking…

The service I provide is based on the principle that prevention is much better than cure, and aims to better prepare the dog owner for this demanding role. Your dog will be delighted you have attended the sessions. A few words about me:

As a registered Clinical Animal Behaviourist, listed in the directory of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC, UK) and a full member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC, UK) you can be confident that I meet the highest standards with regards to my theoretical knowledge, skills and the expertise required to fulfil all of my professional responsibilities and to ensure the welfare of every dog committed to my care. I use humane, reward based and effective methods to help dog owners to train their beloved four – footed partners, manage/solve their behavioural problems and develop symbiosis with them. I have been providing dog training sessions and behaviour sessions since 1994 and 2004 respectively and I have helped hundreds of owners to better train and communicate with their dogs. It was an absolute honour to participate last Tuesday as a speaker at the Power of the Human – Canine Bond event organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Dog Advisory Welfare Group, The Society for Companion Animal Studies (SCAS) and Our Special Friends. It was a privilege to be part of such a meaningful initiative.
The event begun in the afternoon at the Portcullis House, with a drop-in session, where all speakers briefed MPs on various research and practical aspects of this important subject. In the evening, we delivered our talks/presentations to the attendees in Committee Room 11 of the UK Parliament. It is always a real pleasure to meet/work with likeminded colleagues and contribute to events that promote Dog Welfare and the Human-Canine Bond.
Many thanks to Dr Marc Abraham, Dr Elizabeth Ormerod , Dr Bin Johnston and Agria Pet Insurance for organising the event!

Happy to delivering again a webinar for SCAS!
In this webinar I will briefly explain my method/approach on promoting shelter dogs welfare, optimising dog - shelter staff interaction and increasing the potential for successful adoptions. Parts of this method/approach were first presented in the 2019 annual conference of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, UK.

This webinar presents the InKennel training method and looks at dog - staff interaction in the shelter/kennel environment.

Tips and Food for Thought (No4)
Puppy habituation to the vet clinic environment and socialisation with the vet staff are absolutely crucial and important training processes. Begin with short-stay visits where the puppy will always get favorite treats in order to create pleasant associations and nice experiences.

Tips and Food for Thought (No3)

It is very important to choose carefully the ‘friends’ of our dogs so that they can both feel good and play safely.

Tips and Food for Thought (No2)

This is Goofy, a 3.5 months old male beagle puppy. The need for exercise and body stimulation is very important for the puppy development… and is more than apparent in this video!

A puppy who is not given the opportunity, on a daily basis, to run of the lead (in a confined and safe area of course) is very likely to develop unwanted behaviours in the house environment such as excessive barking and destructiveness.

TIPS & FOOD FOR THOUGHT (No 1)

The lead is not only controlling our dogs’ movements. The way we handle it, can also convey information to the its other end, about our psychological state and mood. Dogs can ‘get informed’ about our stress levels and tension by the way we handle the lead. If only we had the same perception ability*…! That would help us a lot to better communicate with them and make less mistakes while using the lead…
*This ability is developed – to a certain extent – as we become more experienced in dog handling and we are able to focus on dog’s body language and overall behaviour.
