Γνωρίζατε ότι οι κτηνοτρόφοι και οι αγελάδες ενέπνευσαν την ανακάλυψη του πρώτου εμβολίου; Στα τέλη του 18ου αιώνα οι κτηνοτρόφοι που εργάζονταν με βοοειδή όχι μόνο παρουσιάζουν ανοσία στην ευλογιά των μηρυκαστικών αλλά και ιδιαίτερα χαμηλά ποσοστά θνησιμότητας σε εξάρσεις της ευλογιάς του ανθρώπου (ιού Variola).
Χάρη σε αυτές τις παρατηρήσεις, το 1796 ο γιατρός Edward Jenner ανοσοποίησε πειραματικά ένα αγόρι με ευλογιά το οποίο όταν αργότερα μολύνθηκε δεν νόσησε.Η λέξη "εμβόλιο" (vaccine) προέρχεται από τη λατινική λέξη "vaccinus" που σημαίνει "από αγελάδες". Εκατομμύρια ζωές ανθρώπων έχουν σωθεί κάνοντας έτσι τις αγελάδες "θρύλους" για τη δημόσια υγεία.
Σε συνδυασμό με τις σύγχρονες μεθόδους διάγνωσης και θεραπείας ο εμβολιασμός είναι ένας ουσιαστικός σύμμαχος στην εξάλειψη των μολυσματικών ασθενειών. Όταν πρόκειται για νέα στελέχη οργανισμών που προκαλούν ασθένειες, τα εμβόλια θεωρούνται ευρέως ως η καλύτερη ελπίδα για την ανθρωπότητα να σταματήσει ή τουλάχιστον να επιβραδύνει μια πανδημία.

Did you know that dairy farmers and cows inspired the discovery of the FIRST VACCINE ever? In the late 18th century, farmers and people working regularly with cattle seemed to be immune not only to cowpox, but they were often spared during smallpox, or Variola virus, outbreaks.
Thanks to those observations, in 1796 the physician Edward Jenner experimentally immunized a boy with cowpox; the boy did not get sick when later infected with the deadly smallpox virus. "Vaccine" derived from the latin word "vaccinus" meaning "from cows", saving millions of lives and immortalizing cows in public health.
In addition to well-developed treatments and diagnoses, vaccination is an essential ally in the eradication of infectious diseases. When it comes to new strains of disease-causing organisms, vaccines are widely regarded as the best hope for humanity to stop or at least slow an epidemic.

In the June issue of Dairy Farmer, STgenetics' CEO Juan Moreno approaches the impact of genomic testing, the breakthrough of feed efficiency trait and the opportunities arising from the purchase of Cogent.
According to Juan Moreno, genomic testing is much more than only about genetic gain. There is a lot of money to be saved in not having to raise a heifer for two years to find if their genetic value and performance is below average. Genomic testing allows farmers to know a heifer's genetic value sooner, determining whether or not she will be a profitable individual.
By Genomic testing through STgenetics, the results contain an EcoFeed® genomic evaluation, which is a trait that looks at feed conversion. With EcoFeed®, at the end of the day farmers are saving on the environmental side, and it is one of the few traits that is a win-win proposition for the producer and consumer. "That is the reason why we as company have devoted so much time and a significant amount of money to that research", says Moreno.
