🚨Juana has been seen! ⚠️🤯
In an incredible turn of events, Juana, the dog who went missing near Panajachel on our special outing has been seen in Tzununa!

By our very own Angus, who recently has left, on his way out sent me this picture not sure why this dog was looking at him so funny. He is ACTUALLY the Juana and we are so amazed to see him alive. 💜

However he has not yet been captured, and is still loose! If you see him PLEASE contact us right away. We are looking for him on the daily and would very much like to take him home. 🏡

🟠 I'm Sammy-boy! 🐕
🟡 Sammy is one of the cutest of the cute. Volunteers and visitors every day fall in love with Sammy all over again. Him and his brother Sonny were born nearby in our village in zuna, but then passed over to us.
🟢 Despite being completely full at the time, with the locals asking us nicely we could do nothing but open our arms to these little puppies. 😅✅
💙 Sunny and Sammy now are both over a year old, vaccinated and sterilized, very trainable and quite domesticated as well!

🟣 These dogs are just perfect for a brand new home. Either Sammy alone or with the two of them as a pair. Sunny will get his own lovely post as they are both very individual and wonderful pups.

Age: 3 years ☑️
Condition: healthy/vaccinated/sterilized. ✅
Training: high-level leash trained. But not very good with off-leash. Has a "prey drive" for chickens 🐓.❌
Personality: extremely friendly and a funny dog. She is a great protector and should be handled with care, and in a home with basic dog-training and experience. 👍

❤️ Pitaya is a special dog with a special story. She is the single only dog that was ever given to us through the help of the local police! 👮‍♂️👮‍♀️🚓
🟠 She was, in fact, a severe neglect case. She was tied up for extremely long periods of time, in a condition that is considered abusive by Guatemalan legal standards.
🟡⚠️ Believe it or not: Guatemala has excellent laws protecting dogs and giving them rights. However, the downside is there is virtually no enforcement of this at all. 😢

🟢 Here's where you can help! You can help Pitaya get adopted! 🙌
💙 Pitaya is one of the dogs with the most need for a home out of all of our dogs. For this we can say she's one of the highest priorities for homes: she does not like fireworks, she is afraid of local people for obvious reasons, and would be much much happier in a domesticated space and a happy family.

Meet Milagro 🐶, an adorable 9 month old puppy who’s very affectionate and extremely sweet. She’s a genuine and pure soul that doesn’t have a bad bone inside her. Milagro is an adventurous lady that loves to exercise and explore the world! She loves going on long walks and has incredible manners both on and off leash.

Milagro had a rough start at life once called the “machete puppy” she was found with her head cut open by a machete, despite this terrible act of violence she made a full recovery and showed everybody what a true survivor she is. This is where her spanish name Milagro which translates to miracle comes from!

Milagro has adapted incredibly to our giant pack, has a true heart of gold 💛 and is a highly socialised dog. This sweet lady is looking for someone that can provide her with an active lifestyle and a lot of outdoorsy fun. She’s excellent with other dogs and children and loves pets and human affection. Milagro can be a bit shy at first but once she warms up to you you’re sure to have found a buddy for life. Happy New Year! 🌟🎊🎆
Every year begins for us like every single day does, with feeding the dogs. Feeding the dogs is singularly the most ritualistic activity we have as a dog pack, the dogs need to eat everyday and this is an absolute essential! Many ask me in interviews: "what do volunteers do all day at the sanctuary?"

Well, if nothing else: you can expect to feed and walk the dogs. This is daily, all the time, every day of the year. This is the main "work", so to speak, of running a dog sanctuary.

The job in a sense is somewhat seasonal. A part of the year, we're rescuing, going around the streets, picking up puppies, and things like this. Once an optimal level of dogs has been reached, we take care of them, we promote adoptions, we promote sponsors, fosters, sterilization clinics, and anything else that can help the situation with the dogs.

We are so grateful to have such an amazing and incredible team that manages the dog sanctuary as a group and small community. And we're so grateful to have an incredible community of sponsors, donors, followers, friends and supporters who make the Perros Libres community what it is! Together we ALL make this possible! 🙏💗

Prayers for Mr. Burns! 🙏♥️✨
Our little puppy dog cute little nicknamed Mr Burns has gotten sick. 😢 He's caught distemper along with a couple of the other puppies from the streets. 🥺
Our little guys have already been given some of their vaccination rounds, and yet still seem to have fallen victim to this deadly illness. 🦠 Mr Burns has already gotten over mange, worms, and a very disheveled lifestyle from being brought up in the garbage. He also has had malnourished legs and development, and it is our utmost mission to save dogs like him that need excellent and acute rehab and organic food and medicine. 👍💊🩺

We have already lost two puppies from distemper this season. We are working around the clock, day after day, to fight this virus and to save the lives of our puppies including Mr burns. 💓🩸🐶

Welcome: Huisquil! 🥒
🟢 One of the vegetables of the Guatemalan squash family: Huisquil is the vegetable that comes from the Chayote vine. It's also indigenous to Mexico/Honduras/El Salvador.
🟦 We use it as a primary vegetable in our organic dog-food recipe. Imagine it kind of like a mix between a pumpkin and a cucumber. There are also various different kinds of Huisquil even here in this area.
♦️This Huisquil, the puppy 😂🐶, is the special addition to our Perros Libres family. He's from the family of puppies from Tzununa town center, who were seen in previous videos coming from the "garbage dump".
🟣 He is vaccinated and a recovering pup from mange, among other normal bugs & diseases active in this area. His health improves daily but he is adoptable, and available for sponsorship as well.

We are so happy to see Huisquil and his siblings doing great still at the puppy sanctuary. We await the improvement of their health and growth into healthy pups we can adopt into a healthy and happy family.

Doggie Christmas family! 😁🎅🐶
Here we have a combo group: some Mr mullet's volunteers, and are normal live-in dog sanctuary staff together at lunchtime! 😋👏💕

This photo is on Christmas Day 🎄, when we had a lovely volunteer Wednesday just like every week.
Our doggies had a lovely christmas, along with the team! Our team has seemed to grow, strengthen, and harmonize on a deeper level year after year. ⭐

(As you can see, we really got the community-vibe going on! 😜)

We are not like normal "volunteer places" around the lake. We don't charge people 💲 to volunteer here. We don't charge people for anything, but simply ask for your time and energy to help take care of our animals ☺️🐶. As a group we pitch in on food, but everyone works together! This "communal style" meal plan makes it easiest for real nonprofits and charities like ours to make sure we have 3 meals a day for everyone, and always enough for the dogs too. 💪✅

Every year, we get closer to perfecting the perfect dog sanctuary. We are young, we can be on various levels of experience, and can't say we always know what we're doing. Running a dog sanctuary feels like guesswork sometimes, but if you have good people and counsel by your side always, together we always figure out what is right for the dogs. ✨🐶👍

We also want to give a big thank you to all of the surprise donors 💓😉 on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! You guys gave us a very merry holiday with great funding to take us into the next month, the very first of the incoming 2025. You guys rock! 🤩🤟

It's with the warm cheer of gratitude that we thank you this holiday season. It's been a wild journey of 2024, but all the support you've given us this year have helped save the lives of dozens of dogs, another dozen in adoption, and many puppies and been the better for it! ⭐

4 pups to the vet! 🤯🐕🐕🐕🐕🚤⚕️
Today was a bittersweet day at the dog sanctuary: we had a couple new puppies showing some "sniffly-symptoms", and despite getting cough medicine they're symptoms have not subsided. So we took the dogs today to and are we sure glad we did!

🩸Since some of these weird symptoms have shown we got a blood test for , and as deadly and awful virus 🦠 as it is is quite common here.
🟠 2 of the new street puppies we got from are unfortunately sick 😷, and potentially others could be contaminated! 😰☢️

💛⚠️ Distemper is common in our area and we see it roughly once a year! We have effective and appropriate measures for separation and vaccinations for.

💚 The good news: the amazing vets at Vetitlan got on the case and did quite well administering and prescribing meds to our staff and teaching them how to dose everyone correctly.
🟦 Now all the dogs in potential contamination are going into quarantine to be safe, get their meds, and super-special diets with vitamins for their recovery. ⚕️🙏

💚✨Highly adoptable dog: Chonky-Chonk! 😁✨
Chonk came from a difficult background, originally from a loving home but was one day rejected and asked to be dropped off at the sanctuary. 🥺

🟦 We don't know much more besides, he supposedly bit the young child the couple had at the time. ⚠️ We can neither confirm nor deny their accusations, but Chonk was definitely a disturbed dog when we first received him (at least to me moved without explanation to him.) 😰

He was aggressive, scared, and definitely didn't know why he was there at our sanctuary. 🥲 All he saw was lots of other dogs and was very confused and afraid. 😭
That was almost 2 years ago, and Chonk has since well developed into our pack with incredible growth 💪 and lives happily ever after at the sanctuary! But his journey is not over!

We've had Chonk at our sanctuary for nearly over two years, and he is highly adoptable at this stage in his life as he's been well domesticated and developed into a happy loving cuddly and amazing protective dog. 🥹💖

Many many volunteers that are sanctuary and visitors fall in love with Chonk, but he's never found his future forever home. 🏡

Sanctuary changes! 💫 The sanctuary is undergoing some new and exciting changes: we're expanding locations! 🏠🐕🐕🏡 Our goal of expanding locations has been long-standing for years, and this will actually be our second attempt at a second static location. 🚨Emergency alert! 🚨 A dog we have heard report of in upper San Pedro de la Laguna has been, unfortunately, actually skinned alive.
