A snail bigger than your handโฆ as a pet? Woof, Iโll stick to manโs best friendโฆ
Giant African snails are just one of the many weird exotic creatures people have tried to import as pets in Australia.
The problem is, these slimy behemoths could escape their enclosures and wreak havoc on Australiaโs plant life, including the food we grow. Any attempts to import these snails has ended in serious trouble.
While exotic creatures might look cool, there are actually very strict rules about the kinds of pets you can import to Australia โ they might carry dangerous pests and diseases that could devastate our unique environment. Our best friends, dogs and cats from approved countries, are of course welcome, provided you follow all the biosecurity steps to bring them in!
Horses and some bird species can also come here from approved countries, also with strict rules.
Many of these animals that are allowed into Australia, also need to spend some time in quarantine before they can be released into the Australian animal population.
If you want to bring your beloved animal in, just make sure you follow the law.
