【雌性刺蝟需要絕育嗎？】
【Do Female Hedgehogs Need to be Desexed?】

🦔刺蝟患有腫瘤的風險相當高，其中最常見的類型是子宮腫瘤。
患上子宮腫瘤的雌性刺蝟會出現腹部腫脹和尿液中帶血的情況。嚴重的甚至會失血過多致死！子宮感染、化膿也是雌性刺蝟常見的疾病之一。

✅絕育的好處：
絕育手術會切除子宮和卵巢，有助預防子宮腫瘤、子宮蓄膿等可能危及生命的狀況。

💊絕育手術的風險：
絕育手術需要全身麻醉，因此選擇一位對刺蝟麻醉有豐富經驗的獸醫至關重要。使用平衡麻醉可降低麻醉風險。對刺蝟來說，在問題發生之前進行絕育，其健康益處遠超過麻醉和手術的風險。

🦔Hedgehogs are at a high risk of developing cancer and uterine cancer is one of the most common types.
Female hedgehogs with uterine cancer can have a swollen belly and blood in their urine. In severe cases, they can lose so much blood that they can bleed to death! Infections in the uterus (pyometra) can also been seen in entire female hedgehogs.

✅The Benefits of Desexing:
A desexing surgery is the removal of the uterus and ovaries. This can prevent uterine tumors and infections which can be life-threatening.

💊The Risks of Desexing:
Desexing requires general anesthesia. Therefore, it is very important to choose a veterinarian who has a lot of experience with anesthesia in hedgehogs. Using balanced anesthesia is important to decrease the anesthetic risk. Balanced anesthesia means using several different medications – injections and inhaled anesthesia. For hedgehogs, the health benefits from desexing BEFORE a problem occurs far outweighs the risk of anesthesia and surgery.

Rehabilitation medicine is similar to physiotherapy for people and is helpful for pets who have joint/bone/muscle pain related to surgery, an injury, or arthritis.
This year-long program was through the Chi University in Seoul and Taipei which is also where she studied veterinary acupuncture and palliative care. 【Abscesses Q&A】

❓問：什麼時候需要去看獸醫？需要去急診醫院嗎？‍
🧑‍⚕️答：寵物身上出現任何腫脹都是異常，但緊急程度各有不同。
如寵物虛弱、昏昏欲睡或食慾下降，需要緊急處理。
如寵物在其他方面表現正常，我們建議1至2天內去看獸醫。
很多寵物都是善於隱藏病痛的高手，為了安全起見，最好立即尋求獸醫的幫助。

❓問：聽說倉鼠得了膿瘡就會死​​，是真的嗎？
🧑‍⚕️答：不！我們經常治癒倉鼠和其他寵物的膿瘡。然而，由於倉鼠體型較小，膿瘡很容易影響其他部位，如眼睛、鼻腔和腹部器官，令病情加重，甚至導致死亡。
我們建議每天至少一次檢查寵物是否有新腫塊，並在發現問題時盡快就醫。

❓問：細菌培養的費用昂貴，可以不做嗎？
🧑‍⚕️答：強烈建議膿瘡患者進行細菌培養，讓獸醫診斷細菌感染的類型並使用最合適的抗生素。服用無效的抗生素不但浪費金錢，並且會延誤治療。

❓問：餵抗生素很麻煩，若腫脹消失，可提早停止服用抗生素嗎？
🧑‍⚕️答：在未與獸醫討論之前，請勿停止任何抗生素治療！
如果難以使用抗生素或你的寵物感到壓力，請聯絡獸醫看看能否使用其他方法，例如使用不同口味或不同的方式用藥。
提前停用抗生素會令感染復發和產生抗藥性。
根據獸醫的建議停止使用抗生素也很重要，超過必要的時間使用抗生素會導致不必要的副作用。

❓問：如兔子、龍貓或天竺鼠的頭部有膿瘡，是否需要進行電腦掃描(CT Scan)？
🧑‍⚕️答：是的！電腦掃描可以提供許多 X光無法看到的細節。顱骨/頭部電腦掃描可在無全身麻醉或鎮靜情況下進行，而顱骨 X 光檢查則需要全身麻醉。
頭部膿瘡可能源自耳朵或牙齒，並擴散到顱骨的其他部位，只有電腦掃描才能讓獸醫知道膿瘡的確切位置，以便計劃最有效的手術治療。儘管電腦掃描的費用高於 X光檢查，但在許多情況下更具成本效益，除了減少支付麻醉費用，你的寵物亦可避免沒有療效的重複手術治療。

❓Q: When do I need to see a veterinarian? Do I need to rush to the emergency hospital?
🧑‍⚕️A: Anything swelling on your pet is abnormal, but the degree of urgency varies.
It is an EMERGENCY if your pet is weak, lethargic, or has a decreased appetite.
If your pet is otherwise acting normally, then we recommend scheduling a consultation with your veterinarian in the next 1-2 days.
It is important to remember that a lot of our furry friends are good at hiding signs of illness. Therefore, it is always better to be on the safe side and seek immediate veterinary attention.

❓Q: I heard that hamsters will die if they get an abscess. Is this true?
🧑‍⚕️A: No! We often successfully treat abscesses in hamsters and other pets. However, because hamsters are small, an abscess can easily affect other areas such as their eyes, nasal cavity, and abdominal organs.
This can make the hamster very sick and may even lead to death.
Therefore, it is absolutely critical to check your baby at home at least once daily for any new lumps and seek medical attention as soon as possible when problems are discovered.

❓Q: The cost of a bacterial culture is expensive, is it possible not to do it?
🧑‍⚕️A: It is strongly recommended that all patients with abscesses have a sample collected for bacterial culture. This allows us to diagnose the type of bacterial infection and the best antibiotics to use. Without these results, your pet may be on an antibiotic that is not effective. This can be a waste of your money and the delay in appropriate treatment could be very dangerous to your pet.

❓Q: It is troublesome to give the antibiotic to my pet. If the swelling goes away, can I stop giving the antibiotic earlier than recommended?
🧑‍⚕️A: Do NOT stop any antibiotic therapy without first discussing it with your veterinarian. If it is difficult to administer the antibiotic or if your pet is stressed, please contact your veterinarian so they can discuss a different method. Your veterinarian may recommend a different flavor or a different way to administer the antibiotic.
If you stop an antibiotic too early, the infection may recur and/or the antibiotic may become resistant which means that you will need to start over from the beginning with a new culture sample and a new antibiotic.
It is also important to stop the antibiotic when recommended by your veterinarian. Using antibiotics for longer than necessary can lead to unwanted side effects.

❓Q: My pet rabbit, chinchilla, or guinea pig has an abscess on their head/face. Is a CT scan (computed tomography) necessary?
🧑‍⚕️A: Yes! CT scans can provide a lot of information and details that cannot be seen on x-rays. Additionally, CT scans of the skull/head can be performed WITHOUT any general anesthesia (GA) or sedation, whereas proper skull x-rays require GA.
Abscesses on the head can arise from the ears or teeth and can spread to the other bones in the skull. Only a CT scan can let your veterinarian know the exact location of the abscess so that they can plan the most effective surgical treatment.
Although the cost of a CT scan is higher than x-rays, in many cases it ends up being more cost effective because you do not need to pay for GA and your pet may not need to undergo repeated surgical treatments that may not be curative.

Abscesses can be concerning, but knowing the signs can play a key role in preventing them.
🦷Dental problems are a common cause of abscesses, especially in dwarf rabbits or those that eat pellets. Common signs of a dental problem are decreased eating and/or excessive drooling.
🐽Guinea pigs can develop a lump near their neck due to infection or inflammation in the lymph nodes around their head.
🐹Hamsters can develop lumps around the eyes, a**s, and/or testicles.

If you notice any of these signs in your pet, be sure to see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment can reduce pain and medical expenses. Remember, that preventing an abscess is easier than curing one! That’s why we recommend 💉annual health checks in all of our patients.

Vaccinations for dogs not only protect their health but also protect you and your family from zoonotic diseases (diseases transmitted from animals to humans), such as rabies and leptospirosis.

▶️Core Vaccines:

【Treating Abscesses】

When dealing with abscesses, early detection and aggressive treatment are key. Delaying diagnosis and treatment often makes abscesses more difficult to treat.
Abscesses can only be treated once the cause of the abscess is identified. The source of the abscess could be caused by an ear, tooth, or skin infection.

Rabbit pus is extremely thick – similar to the texture of cream cheese! Therefore, rabbit abscesses are impossible to “drain” and surgery is very often required.

1️⃣ Drainage and wound care
🩺Surgery is essential to treat most abscesses. The surgery can range from simple drainage (not in rabbits) to surgical removal and depends on the severity and cause of the abscess. When the abscess is mild and not affecting the underlying tissue, we can consider surgical drainage (removal of the pus). This less invasive procedure can sometimes be performed under sedation. Removing the pus can also give us the opportunity to collect a sample for bacterial culture so that we know what type of antibiotics to use.

2️⃣ Surgery
💉When the bones are involved, surgery is almost always necessary.
🦷This is very common with tooth related abscesses. Because of the specialized teeth in rabbits and rodents – their “reserve crowns” (or roots) can be the cause of the infection. Without surgically removing the infected tooth, the infection will be impossible to cure and will likely recur.

🐰Ear infections which are common in lop-eared rabbits, often require surgical intervention. These are not really abscesses, but they can rarely be cured with just antibiotics.
It is normal to be concerned that surgery will be painful for your pet. But, many pets feel significantly better AFTER surgery to remove abscesses because the pain from the pressure and inflammation of the infection is removed.

3️⃣ Medication
💊Antibiotics and painkillers are crucial before and after surgery.
The selection of antibiotics needs to be based on the results of culture and sensitivity testing to ensure maximum efficacy and avoid resistance. Conditions involving bone infections usually require a longer course of antibiotics (4-8 weeks).

【治療膿瘡】
【Treating Abscesses】

在處理膿瘡時，早期發現和積極治療是關鍵，延誤診斷和治療往往會使膿瘡更難以治療。
治療膿瘡前必須先確定原因。膿瘡的來源可能是由耳朵、牙齒或皮膚感染引起。
兔子膿瘡中的膿液很稠，質地有如牙膏，打開膿瘡時難以排出，因而無法「引流」，通常需要手術治療。

1️⃣ 引流及傷口護理
🩺手術對於治療大多數膿瘡都佷重要。手術範圍從簡單引流（不適用於兔子）到手術切除，取決於膿瘡的嚴重程度和原因。
當膿瘡較輕，不影響下層組織時，可以考慮手術引流（去除膿液）。 這種侵入性較小的手術有時可以在鎮靜狀態下進行。 去除膿液還可以讓我們有機會收集細菌培養樣本，以便知道要使用哪種類型的抗生素。

2️⃣ 手術
💉當涉及骨骼時，大部份情況都需要手術。
🦷這在與牙齒相關的膿瘡中很常見。由於兔子和囓齒動物的牙齒特殊，它們的「備用牙冠」（或牙根）可能是感染的原因。如果沒有透過手術去除受感染的牙齒，感染將無法治愈，並且可能會復發。
🐰耳部感染在垂耳兔中很常見，通常需要手術介入。 這些並不是真正的膿瘡，但僅用抗生素很少能完全治癒。
擔心手術會令寵物痛苦是人之常情，但是，許多寵物在膿瘡切除手術後感覺明顯好多了，因為壓力和感染發炎引起的疼痛消失了。

3️⃣ 藥物治療
💊抗生素和止痛藥在手術前後至關重要。
抗生素的選擇需要根據培養和藥敏試驗的結果來決定，以確保最大功效及避免抗藥性。 涉及骨感染的病症通常需要較長療程的抗生素（4-8 週）。

🦜鸚鵡生病了，一個溫暖、漆黑和安靜的鳥籠能讓牠們更快復原。

▶️鳥籠的溫度應保持在26-28℃之間，並用毛巾圍蓋著最少三面和籠頂，放置在遠離冷氣、電視、音響及窗邊的地方。
▶️生病的鸚鵡需要充足的休息，不應在籠內攀爬和玩耍，因此您應把企棍移除，在籠底墊上報紙或柔軟的紙巾，讓牠可在鳥籠的底部休息，減少體力耗損。
▶️此外，可在籠底多處放置食物兜及盛水兜，並儘量接近病鳥，方便牠們無需移動即可進食和飲水，但注意必須經常更換食水以確保清潔衛生。

🦜When your bird is sick, it is important for them to stay in a warm, dark, and quiet cage for a better recovery.

▶️The ideal temperature to keep your bird is 26-28℃. You should have 3 sides and the top of the cage covered by a towel. The cage should be kept away from the air conditioning, TV, stereo, and windows.
▶️Do not let your sick bird play or climb around the cage. All perches should be removed so that they can stay at the bottom of the cage to save their energy. You can cover the floor of the cage with newspaper and soft paper towels for your bird to sit on.
▶️You can place several food and water bowls on the floor of the cage so that your bird doesn’t have to move far to eat and drink. Make sure to change the water frequently to maintain hygiene.

如果你看過之前的post，懷疑你的寵物可能有膿瘡的症狀，記住要尋求獸醫的幫助！
膿瘡會導致腫脹，癌症和創傷也會導致腫脹。即使腫脹是膿瘡所致，治療方法也取決於感染原因。

你的獸醫會為動物進行徹底的💊身體檢查，記錄可疑膿瘡的位置、大小和其他詳細資料。 檢查口腔和耳朵也很重要，因為膿瘡可能是由牙齒或耳朵感染所引起。

If you followed previous post and think that your baby may have symptoms of an abscess, remember that the first step is to seek help from a veterinarian!
Abscesses can cause swelling, but so can cancer and trauma. Even if the swelling is an abscess, the treatment will depend on the cause of the infection.

Your veterinarian will perform a thorough 💊physical examination and record the location, size, and other details of the suspected abscess. A check-up of the mouth and ears is also crucial, as abscesses can be caused by tooth or ear infections.

Usually, your veterinarian will recommend further testing such as a 🩸blood test, diagnostic imaging (X-ray or CT scan), bacterial culture, etc. Diagnostic imaging is particularly important because it can help your veterinarian understand key information such as the location and source of the abscess. This is information is vital for successful treatment, especially when abscesses are caused by dental disease.

🩺The successful treatment of abscesses is not only about removing the pus. Without identifying and removing the source of infection the abscess will recur. This leads to more pain/distress for your pet and the repeated treatments will result in an increased total medical expense.

【認識膿瘡】
【What is an Abscess?】

膿瘡通常是因為細菌感染，膿液積聚所致，可以在動物身上任何部位出現。牙齒、耳朵及手術後的感染，或是異物（如碎片）、外傷或咬傷都會造成膿瘡。

▶️小動物易患上膿瘡
兔子、天竺鼠、龍貓和倉鼠獨特的牙齒結構，令牠們容易出現膿瘡。垂耳兔通常會出現耳朵感染而導致膿瘡，天竺鼠的下巴位置較容易出現膿瘡，而倉鼠的頰囊或睪丸亦會出現感染。
任何腫脹的部位，尤其是臉部周圍。口腔膿瘡通常在眼睛、嘴巴、臉頰或下巴附近，耳膿瘡常於耳根部位出現。雄性倉鼠可能因膿腫而出現睪丸腫大。

An abscess is a painful collection of pus, usually caused by a bacterial infection. Abscesses can develop anywhere in the body. They can be caused by tooth infections, ear infections, post-surgical infections, foreign body reactions (like a splinter), trauma, or bite wounds.

▶️Why are small animals are susceptible to abscesses ?
Rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and hamsters have unique tooth structures that make them prone to abscesses. Lop-eared rabbits often develop ear infections that can lead to abscesses. Guinea pigs more commonly develop abscesses on their jaws, while hamsters may develop infections in their cheek pouches or testicles (for male hamsters).

▶️Common sites
Watch for lumps and bumps on anywhere, but particularly around the face. Dental abscesses often swelling near the eyes, mouth, cheeks, or chin. Ear abscesses may appear at the base of the ears. Male hamsters may have enlarged testicles due to abscesses.

▶️Common symptoms
If your pet feels unwell, they may show non-specific symptoms such as a decreased appetite and lethargy. Pay special attention to any suspicious lumps or swelling. If you notice anything unusual, please schedule a consultation with us at ☎️25271718.

【E蟲會導致側頭症嗎?】
【Does E. cuniculi Cause Headtilt in Rabbits?】

兔腦炎微孢子蟲（俗稱E蟲）感染是一種非常複雜的兔子疾病，幾乎不可能在活兔子身上確實地診斷它是否側頭症的成因。E蟲可以感染許多不同的身體部位，而且很難治癒。

E蟲是一種在世界各地都很常見的真菌，高達 75% (數據因國家而異) 的兔子接觸過這種真菌。 這種真菌形成的孢子可以在環境中停留很久。 兔子可能會因為吃了其他兔子排出的傳染性孢子或在兔媽媽子宮內受到感染。 真菌在兔子的腎臟內分裂，然後通過尿液排出以感染其他兔子，主要是影響腎臟的疾病，但也會影響其他身體部位，例如神經系統和眼睛。

由於這種疾病非常普遍，許多兔子都接觸過，牠們的身體可能會抵抗感染，或是無症狀的潛伏感染。如果兔子接觸到這種真菌，我們可以從兔子的免疫系統得知，在血液中找到抗體（“IgG”和“IgM”）。這讓我們知道兔子在某個時刻接觸過E蟲，但不能確定是何時被感染、牠們當下是否被感染，或者牠們是否會因感染而生病。因此，這個測試只有在陰性的情況下才有幫助。

E. cuniculi (Encephalitozoon cuniculi) is a very complicated disease in rabbits. It is nearly impossible to diagnose a live rabbit, it can infect many different body parts, and this disease is very difficult to cure.

E. cuniculi is a fungus that is very common all over the world. Depending on the country, up to 75% of rabbits have been exposed to this fungus. This fungus forms spores that can stay in the environment for a long time. Rabbits can be infected by eating the infective spores shed by other rabbits OR from their mom when they are in her uterus. The fungus divides inside the rabbit’s kidneys and is then shed in their urine to infect other rabbits. This is primarily a disease that affects the kidneys, but it can affect other body parts such as the nervous system and the eye.

Because this disease is so common, many rabbits are exposed. When a rabbit is exposed to this fungus, their body may fight off the infection and they never show any signs of illness. If a rabbit is exposed to this fungus, their immune system will let us know. We look for antibodies in the bloodstream (“IgG” and “IgM”). This lets us know that the rabbit was exposed to E. cuniculi at some point in their life, but it does not tell us when they were infected, if they are currently infected, or if they will become sick from the infection. Therefore, this test is really only helpful if it is negative.

Medications such as fenbendazole and albendazole may prevent E. cuniculi infection, but they do not eliminate the spores from the body. Even if the spores are gone, there can still be damage to the organs. Therefore, there is not a lot of benefit to using fenbendazole. In fact, there are many studies showing that fenbendazole can cause severe side effects such as damage to the bone marrow which can cause a decrease in the red blood cells (anemia), platelets, and white blood cells. If fenbendazole is given to your rabbit, we recommend that they have their blood tested at least once weekly during treatment.

So, does E. cuniculi cause head tilts in rabbits? The short answer is that it can cause head tilts if the spores are in the brain, but there will be lots of other signs of a brain infection such as seizures, blindness, headache, etc. There are MANY causes of head tilts in rabbits – a head tilt does NOT mean E. cuniculi and does NOT mean that your rabbit needs fenbendazole!
