We base our breeding on love toward dogs and the breed. Our dogs live with us, in our house, yard, room. They travel with us, they spend vacations with us. We don't keep our dogs in crates and we don't have large number of dogs in our home. Part of the dogs live with co-owners and in arrangements with people that have them as pets. We show our dogs regularly, for fun, friends, dog socialization, p

resentation of our breeding and comparison with other dogs in the breed. Our dogs are under regular veterinary control. Dogs that are used in breeding have their hips x-rayed, and most of them even elbows. Part ofl dogs in our kennel have their DNA profile made so parenthood can be proved to their progeny. We feed our dogs with combination of natural food and superpremium dog food. Every Vala Liburna litter is bred because of believe that particular combination can contribute to the breed and breeding. We look for a good, loving homes for our puppies. We look for homes for all dog's life with people that are aware of potential difficulties of having tornjak but also all beautiful traits and moments that they will for sure have with them. Feedback about health and temperament of our puppies is highly important to us. When we think that puppy has a potential we look for the owners that will show the dog and make all necessary for the responsible breeding or make an arrangement with us to do the same. Tornjaks are our native breed and it is on us to take care of it.

Mraz Vala Liburna ❤️ vjerojatno cu zauvijek pamtiti tvoj dolazak na svijet. Mozda zaboravim tvoj miris. Mozda i kolicinu pusa koje si davao. Ali onih par trenutaka kad sam te prvi put imala u rukama ne vjerujem da cu zaboraviti. Cuj, tamo gdje si otisao prvo je isla jos jedna nezaboravna - Malina, a slijedio ju je njen sin Feral. On te ceka tamo da jos koju godinu provedete skupa. Nadam se. Ova mala dvonozna ti porucuje i da je tamo papiga koja govori, mace, zecici, velika livada…ma svasta nesto lijepo. Znamo to. I vidimo se, znas? .poldrugo i ostatak familije znaju kako voljeti tornjake.

Mareta Vala Liburna ❤️ jesi li uopce otisla ili si se samo malo preselila? Meri Beri aka Fritula je ljubomorka pa ces morat malo pazit koliko joj se vrtis oko Nenota. Moki mislim mislim da ce lakse djelit, a njoj se napuknuto srce mozda ipak opet malo zaokruzi. je zaduzena za tvoju prisutnost na drustvenim mrezama, a i moze doprinjeti. Uglavnom, to ti je jedna super familija pa se vidimo uskoro. Sigurna sam da te ceka svasta nesto lijepo, samo se umili Merki onako kako ti to znas i kako si vjezbala ovdje s drugim kujama. I ljubi je od mene. (To ti je Unina mama, znas?)

How Does a Tornjak Think?
The Tornjak is a dog that is highly aware of its surroundings. It has an excellent ability to notice patterns and rules, quickly registering even the smallest changes. If you take it out of its familiar environment, alter just one detail, and then bring it back, you can be certain that this change will be the first thing it investigates.

This breed has a remarkable understanding of context, which can sometimes give the impression of a “split personality.” If we don’t understand how a Tornjak thinks, we might be surprised by completely different reactions when moving it from one context to another.

For instance, you might have a well-socialized Tornjak that behaves impeccably while walking through the city or sitting at a café, unbothered by passersby. However, that same dog might surprise you with barking when you take it into nature and encounter unfamiliar visitors. Similarly, you could walk the same familiar path at different times of the day and feel as if you’re walking two completely different dogs. During a training session, the Tornjak might be obedient and attentive, but in other situations, it could ignore your commands as if it had never been trained at all.

My first Tornjak, Vala, once barked in the forest at a plastic bag caught in tree branches by the wind, curiously observed a woman in the city wearing a wide-brimmed hat, and reacted with barking at an oversized statue of a runner on a popular walking path. That was my introduction to Tornjaks, and my experiences with others only confirmed what she had already shown me.

Mantrailing
Lutka Vala Liburna, better known as Lumi, is training mantrailing.
Mantrailing is a canine discipline where a dog searches for a person using their scent. It is typically practiced in urban environments, with the help of the person’s scent, a long leash, and a reward like food or play.
What happens in mantrailing?
The most important aspect of mantrailing is the collaboration between the handler and the dog.
The dog uses its sense of smell and mental abilities while moving, and the handler provides motivation and guidance. Dogs are trained to ignore environmental distractions.
The goal isn’t speed but working in increasingly challenging conditions and developing motivation.
How did Lumi adapt?
Lumi is a 2.5-year-old female Tornjak who started training at 8 months old.
• She is quick and accurate in makidecisions.
• She has no fears – crowds, noises, and people don’t distract her.
• Dogs and cats are minor challenges, but she keeps working even when a cat crosses her path!
Challenges and solutions
Like most Tornjaks, Lumi isn’t highly motivated by play or food. Unlike some other breeds, it’s hard to find an effective and systematic motivator for her.
In training, we use a combination of food, play, and petting (which she adores) to keep her motivated.
Hormonal changes during her heat cycles have affected her performance, but those fluctuations are now reduced to a minimum.
A Tornjak in mantrailing
Many find it incredible to see a Tornjak excel in a discipline like mantrailing, as it contrasts with their natural instincts.
Lumi successfully ignores distractions, and after training, she switches back to her “Tornjak mode,” behaving as a natural guard dog.
We enjoy the training sessions, both of us end up tired, and I’m thrilled to showcase this fascinating breed in a completely different context.

The Tornjak, also known as the Bosnian and Herzegovinian–Croatian Mountain Dog, is a livestock guardian breed originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Croatia. The first recorded mention of this breed in its native regions dates back to the 11th century.By the 20th century, the breed was nearly extinct due to urbanization and industrialization. However, a group of enthusiasts began efforts to revive the breed in the late 1970s. On November 7, 2017, the Tornjak was officially recognized as a breed of dual nationality.Today, while the Tornjak is primarily kept as a pet, guarding homes and families, there are ongoing efforts to preserve its traditional role as a livestock guardian. Working Tornjaks can still be found in various countries, including their native ones.
