We're safe, we're ok.
Thank you for all the support and for thinking about us.
This has been an experience that shook us to the core. Amid a coronavirus crisis, when we're quarantined and already feeling unsafe and panicking, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake woke us. This is the biggest earthquake in the last 140 years and isn't something that we were prepared for. Earthquakes here are usually so mild that most of us don't feel them. Not this one, every single person affected said that they were scared as never before.
We were woken up by cats flying around, like crazy cooped up birds smashing against the walls, it was terrifying. In a split second, I couldn't wrap my mind about what was happening. Everything from armageddon to alien invasion came to mind. There was an awful eery sound echoing, like thunderbolts crashing down, everything was shaking, moving around. Alarms started screaming, you could hear people screaming, panicking, doors slamming, most of our building rushed outside. I was aware that there was no way that we could save all of our animals and saw no point in breaking quarantine and endangering yet more people. I checked the load-bearing walls and was assured when I saw no damage, no fractures. Another 5.0 earthquake followed, this time it seemed shorter, without the eery noise. We've had 3 other earthquakes over 3 magnitudes, but nothing major and there are hundreds of smaller ones happening in the last 13 hours since the big quake.
Cats are calm, so we're calm. After the big quake, they were all shaken koup for more than an hour. Some peed from fear, others took comfort in small nooks around the apartment, while others rushed under our covers.
More than 600 buildings so far have been damaged, our hospitals are old and around the city center and they endured a lot of damage. The timing couldn't have been worse, yet it couldn't have been better, as the army and medical staff were doing all that they could to prepare for the intake of coronavirus victims and have put up numerous tents for emergency and quarantine. The obstetric hospital had to be vacated and women preparing for labor and the ones that just gave birth were rushed almost naked to the street. It was really cold with freezing winds(for days before we had mild weather with lots of sun) and snow started falling, but only a couple of snowflakes. It took some time, but they were all taken to safety with the help of the army and volunteers. They are being taken care of in tents that the army prepared as crisis tents for coronavirus patients. So we could say that this was a lucky coincidence for now.
Many of our friends and acquaintances had to leave everything and are seeking shelter. The ones that really worry us are the people who just like us foster a lot of animals, and we've seen really bad cases where a house almost collapsed and is unsafe, but the volunteer can't find a shelter for herself with 20+ cats. We're full, as the adoptions stopped and some of our adoptive parents are stuck all over the world, but we'll find the room to house a couple more cats.
there's a lot of lost pets, as animals managed to escape and now their owners can't walk around looking for them.
I'm writing you all of this because I know that many of you are in quarantine and you think that that's the end of the world. Things could be worse, much worse, and at a time that nobody expected them. I would have never, not in my wildest nightmares, dreamed of enduring a worldwide pandemic lockdown and an earthquake all at once, but things happen. We were extremely lucky that this happened when we had all the infrastructure set for the intake of coronavirus patients.
Quarantine actually saved lives, as the earthquake was bound to happen at some point. Public transportation wasn't working, all the shops, restaurants and markets were closed, there were no tourists in sight, just empty streets. Almost all of us were inside, in the comfort and safety. If this was just a regular Sunday morning, the streets would have been filled with people and we would now be counting bodies and tending to those injured. We were lucky.
Quarantine is here to save lives and today it saved a lot more than we could have anticipated. Keep yourself safe, avoid going out, relax and enjoy as much as you can. Things could go tumbling down real quick.
Our country is probably a week or so away from the Italian scenario we're seeing now, if this happened a week later we would be in a much bigger problem now. Before this, people in our country acted pretty selfishly, partying and BBQing instead of taking the quarantine thing seriously. This earthquake put a lot of fear into people and reminded them that they are not invincible. We are never going to be this lucky. We're all alive, only 17 with injuries and we have space to house those unlucky people who lost their homes. Learn something from us, don't be naive and stupid. Stay inside, it's not the end of the world.
We haven't been to our workshop today, so we don't know the extend of the damage, but everything can be replaced and made again.
We'll keep you posted and message everyone whose order might be damaged and delayed. We'll continue working, but for now, we have to take care of the unlucky animals and their humans.
Take care of each other, it's all that we can do.
Stay safe! ❤️
