Unofficial: Faith, Hope and Charity

Unofficial: Faith, Hope and Charity Faith, Hope and Charity are rescued working horses located in the Gili Islands, Indonesia. Faith was pregnant when rescued and Charity had a foal with her

The Gili Islands are 3 small islands located between Bali and Lombok. There are very popular tourist destinations in S.E. Asia but overall do not have great infrastructure. One of the main draws of the islands is the fact that no motorized vehicles are allowed so only horse drawn carriages (called Cidomos) are the only mode of transportation besides bicycles. This means that there are many horses

and ponies on the islands and their welfare has become a big concern. Several non profits such as Animal Aid Abroad, Jakarata Animal Aid, Gili Eco Trust and Horses of Gili work diligently to help all of the animals they can but some still need more help then that. In September we rescued 1 pregnant mare whom we named Faith and this rescue was quickly followed by Hope and then Charity. This has resulted in 5 horses(technically ponies) (Faith was pregnant and Charity had a foal by her side). Our goal is to chronicle their recovery and training and ultimately use these ponies to help teach Indonesian youngsters about proper horse care and give riding lessons. We do accept donations to help pay for their food and care and would love for people to follow us and learn more about the lives of these wonderful animals!

ā€œTo love a rescuer you must love all of her. You must love the scars covering her body from panicked and hurt animals she was trying to help. You must love her fractured heart, that has been broken so many times she no longer even takes the time to mend the pieces.

To love a rescuer, you must embrace her grit and determination, and know that although she fights a war she can never win, she can and does win a few battles. You must love the tears she will shed over those she lost. You must give her comfort that she refuses to accept, as she blames herself for things she could have never foreseen.

To love a rescuer you must acknowledge the rage she feels towards the world at times, and know that anger is driven by a love of life too few have. You must give her space and room to cry and mourn for the losses that others have caused out of carelessness or cruelty.

To love a rescuer you must understand her passion to heal and save is a calling, not a choice. You must accept that to save animals is part of her soul and without that she could never be happy.

To love a rescuer you must be patient. You must accept her work comes first. She will forgo sleep, forgo food, forgo her life for animals in need. She will work tirelessly until her body and mind fail her completely and she cannot go on.

To Love a rescuer, you must be strong. You must not be threatened by her focus and love of animals. You must accept that the things you love about her, the strength and convictions and loyalty are also what drives her sense of duty to animals in need; you cannot have one without the other.

To love a rescuer you must never ask her to choose, because she will, and it will not be you. ā€œ

This pony is a great example of first impressions. He works each morning from 8am until 12 as a cidomo pony carrying tourists. Each evening about 6 he goes to the beach to offer sunset rides for tourists. Notice here he is walking happily down the road behind his ownerā€¦no lead ropeā€¦free to go wherever he wantsā€¦

His owner says he gets harassed by tourists in the mornings saying heā€™s mean to make his pony work pulling a cartā€¦thatā€™s itā€™s cruel & the pony is ā€œsufferingā€ā€¦yet each afternoon the same tourists fawn over the pony saying how healthy & friendly he is.

So peopleā€™s first impression is that this is an abused, dehydrated, over worked, unloved ponyā€¦& they berate his owner over itā€¦yet when they see the same pony saddled their perception is completely different. Heā€™s a fat, healthy, friendly pony & is well cared for and loved.

We have three types of tourists it seemsā€¦

1 - they donā€™t notice or bother about horses one way or the other. To them they are like vehicle to go from point A to point B. These tourists may carelessly overload a cart simply out of ignorance.

2 - overly concerned bleeding hearts who are convinced every pony is abused & suffering and that all of them should be in large grassy paddocks & never worked. In their mind work equals abuse. These tourists often harass drivers for simply doing their jobs or guilt trip other tourists for using horse carts.

3 - realistsā€¦these tourists see the ponies as working animals & realize most are in good condition. They understand that there are things we want to improve but that also we have limited ability to make changes. These tourists use horse carts responsibly by not overloading them & this helps support the community

What we try to do in addition to helping the community with free services & educationā€¦is to also educate tourists about the use of working animals. We too get harassed & told we are supporting cruelty & spoken harshly toā€¦

We spend countless hours online & in person speaking with people. We love these ponies & this island.

We promise to do our best to help improve their standard of care; in return we ask that you as visitors to please be kind & respectful šŸ™šŸ»
