How to soothe pet hiccups

Most of the times, pet hiccups are brief and harmless. However, if you observe your pet’s hiccups are causing them discomfort, here’s several gentle remedies you can try to help them subside:
1. Offer them a few sips of fresh, cool water as act of swallowing can hep reset the diaphragm’s rhythm and soothe irritation.
2. Gently stroke your pet’s chest and belly in a circular motion as this can help relax their muscles.
3. Distract them with your pet’s favorite activity or toys as a simple change of focus can be all it takes to break the hiccup cycle.
Consult your veterinarian if your pet experiences frequent and prolonged hiccups to rule out any health concerns!

Introducing kids to dogs

Pets could provide various benefits for kids such as teaching empathy and compassion; provide love, loyalty and affection; help with self esteem; promote physical activity; as well as teaching responsibility. However, introducing kids to dogs may be a difficult thing to do. Here’s what you could do to help with the introduction:
1. Kids should approach dogs casually with quiet confidence as dogs could sense when someone is apprehensive or scared.
2. Avoid using treats or toys during initial introduction to avoid too much excitement and playfulness.
3. Let your dog do a lot of smelling before petting attempt is made.
4. Avoid quick movements or loud sounds as remaining quiet and calm is the best way to keep peace during first introduction.
5. Do not let kids interrupt your dog during their sleep and eating time as they can become easily agitated.
6. Explain various dog’s body language prior.
7. Ideally, two adults should be present during the introduction and limited to only one to two kids so it’ll be less overwhelming.
8. Kids should be taught to pet gently and not too aggressive.
9. If your dog feels uncomfortable, find a safe and relaxing place away from interactions and distractions.

Caring for your senior dog

Most dogs are considered seniors when they are between the ages of 7 and 11. As they tend to need more care, here’s how to plan and properly care for your dogs when they become a ‘senior’:
1. Vet visit is a must once a year for a well check exam, including blood work, a f***l test and any needed vaccinations.
2. Feed them senior food, which is a high quality diet that is lower in fat but high in protein.
3. Softer and easier to digest food may be necessary as their dental health degrades as they age.
4. Regularly brush your dog’s teeth as it is could significantly decrease incidence of problems.
5. Make sure they are comfortable with the living environment.
6. Regular exercise such as walking with help them from being overweight and keeping their heart strong.
7. Playing with toys and devices that challenge their mind could aid in weight management, maintaining health and great for entertainment.

Tips for a less stressful bathing experience

1. Introduce them early to bath, just make sure to pay extra attention to drying them off quickly so they don’t lose much of their body heat.
2. As many are anxious and may be horrified, it is recommended to have proper preparation such as a good walk or play session.
3. Protect their ears by placing a small cotton in the ears to prevent issues such as ear infection.
4. Use lukewarm water as it is the best temperature for bathing pets.
5. Make bathing experience fun by bringing toys and/or treats.
6. Remain calm during wet mishap.
7. Wrap them in a towel during drying to keep them comfortable.

Common dog pawrenting mistakes!
-
1. Waiting too long to socialize your dog. The best window of opportunity is within the first 3 to 4 months.
2. Inconsistent training as in order for training to be effective, it needs to be consistent through time.
3. Letting your dog walk you instead of the other way around. Pawrent should always remain in control and never let your dog assert their dominance over you.
4. Not setting boundaries would lead to disobedient dog and a strained pup-human relationship.
5. Focusing on punishments instead of praises or rewards. Much more desired approach is to reward positive behavior to reduce opportunities for mistakes in the first place.
6. Leaving dogs alone (no other dogs or humans) for more than 6 or 7 hours could lead to undesirable behaviors such as not eating, being destructive, or withdrawn.
7. Allowing them to be overweight as it could destroy their body from within.
8. Skipping annual checkup as it is an important tool for getting ahead.
9. Forgetting heartworm and flea preventatives! Be sure to put a note or sticker on your calendar every time you give them preventative medicine.

The most common dog allergens are of the following:
1. Grass, weeds, bushes and trees
2. Mold spores
3. Dander
4. Dust mites
5. Fleas
6. Cleaning products
7. Cigarette smoke
8. Food ingredients with specific proteins
9. Feathers
10. Perfumes
11. Medications (topical or oral)

Although it is impossible to avoid all allergens, you could certainly minimize the effects of inherited environmental allergies by keeping them away from offending allergen. You could also employ countermeasures to help minimize the effect of an allergen by using antihistamines, special shampoos, steroids, immunosuppressive drugs and special foods!
