From time to time we are asked about our euthanasia policy, especially with paraplegic cats.
We will always euthanise cats who are dying. We never allow cats to suffer but what about our paraplegic cats, we were asked recently, do they have quality of life? Our answer is always come and meet our special needs cats and decide for yourself.
GingerRogers was our first paraplegic cat. Prior to GingerRogers we were guided by outside vets who felt their inability to defecate or urinate by themselves meant it was impossible to care for them. We agreed, for a non veterinarian people, but for our vets this was not an issue. Our vets made the decision with GingerRogers that we could "toilet" him and that he would have a good life!
When GingerRogers arrived at Villa Kitty, Drh Tyas, our senior vet called me over to meet him. One look into this little boy's eyes and we agreed we'd care for him. Then Evie came along two weeks later. Once again, Drh Tyas and her team agreed we could care for little Evie, as well.
You see there is a lot more skill required than flicking the bottoms of kittens who need bottle feeding when they've been taken from their mothers and tossed out.
GingerRogers and Evie spent their day playing in the garden outside my office and I would spend some time each day playing pingpong with GingerRogers - I called him the PingPong wizard. He was amazing. Evie would watch and sometimes put a paw out but she was happy just to watch.
GingerRogers could also climb the tree to the levels above and I remember being shocked at seeing his little face peering at me in my office.
When we moved to our new premises we built this area we called the Special Needs. Since then, we have added nine more paraplegic cats and kittens and a couple have been able to walk after initially believing they would also be paraplegic. Very wobbly walks of course.
We have only euthanised 4 paraplegic cats since then. These decisions are made with care and understanding of the patient's ability to live a good and full life! One cat had been shot in the back and she had difficulty moving about. She had no quality of life and it was only right to allow her peace from her suffering. We know when a paraplegic cat can live a happy life and when it’s best to allow them peace, We make these decisions with our vets and senior staff.
Just like GingerRogers and Evie, all our resident paraplegic cats receive excellent care and live in a loving environment with us. Please visit and like so many who visit these beautiful feline citizens of Bali you will understand.
