🖤 From the Sewer to Safety: Jiti’s Fight to Survive

After a chaotic, heart-wrenching rescue, our team pulled a dog from deep inside a sewer—where she may have been trapped for days. No food, clean water or light. Just fear… and the will to survive.

We rushed her to the vet where we found out that she’s a 5-year-old female – emaciated, dehydrated, and suffering from severe hair loss.

💔 But what broke our hearts even more; When she passed stool, it contained many pieces of plastic, probably from scavenging garbage to survive. Further tests revealed many small tumors near her tail and legs and her thigh. She’s now under close observation and fighting for her life.

We’ve named her Jiti – a name that means “to live.”

Because that’s what we’re fighting for: her chance not just to survive, but to truly live a good life.

🙏 Please help us give Jiti the care she urgently needs – treatment, vaccinations, sterilization, and daily comfort and care so she can heal.

💛 Every donation brings her closer to living her best life.

WHERE DOES COMPASSION BEGIN?

Are we born kind or cruel? Is empathy in our DNA, or do we learn it from the world around us - parents, siblings, teachers, friends, elders, priests or companions?
At BAWA, we witness heartbreaking cases of animal cruelty every single day, and many involve children. In a case we received the other day, children repeatedly are being cruel to animals; shooting and killing innocent birds and other wildlife.

Each case shocks us. Saddens us. Angers us. We ask ourselves: how can we make a difference?

💡 We believe in education.

This is why BAWA reaches children in public schools across Bali, starting in primary classrooms, creating a space to ignite and empower empathy. We help children learn that compassion is normal. That kindness is strength. That animals feel. That each animal’s life matters.

We also work with village leaders and officials, advocating for laws to prevent cruelty. But fear of punishment isn't enough. True change must grow from within.

We’re planting seeds – one child, one classroom, one village at a time. Because we believe cruelty isn’t inevitable, and compassion can be learned, lived, and passed on. 💛

Please share this post and stand with us in our calls for change.

🌟 VILLAGE PRIDE IN ONE HEALTH! 🌟

One day last week, in a remote village nestled between two volcanoes, near Lake Batur, we sterilized 21 animals, vaccinated 32 against rabies, and left a whole community empowered with lifesaving animal care knowledge!

🐶 From learning how to hold a puppy correctly to understanding the power of clean water bowls and daily meals, even the simplest changes can mean the world for an animal’s health and happiness.

💛 What touched us most? Seeing just how proud the community was to get their pets vaccinated! They now know why it matters – and they’re ready to keep their animals safe and healthy!

This is a remote, challenging area, but thanks to the support of the Bangli Vet Association and local village leaders, our One Health program is making a real difference 🐾

Healthier animals = Healthier communities.

Thank you FOUR PAWS for partnering with BAWA and supporting this One-Health program. 🙌 💛

A Pangolin at a Dog Shelter? 🐾

It was early morning when our Ubud rehoming center staff discovered something they never expected: A small pangolin, curled up quietly on top of a dog kennel!

We've rescued pangolins before, but always in the wild, near river valleys. Our center is on a main road, walled in, surrounded by development. So how did she get there?

Did someone find her and drop her over the wall? Did she crawl through the rice fields from the distant canal?

However she arrived, this pangolin’s appearance tells a heartbreaking story: Bali's wildlife is being pushed out. Development is swallowing habitats. Animals are getting disorientated, lost, sick, and dying...

We cooled the little one down and rushed her to our partners at the Friends of Nature, People and Forests (FNPF) Center in Tabanan, who, after a quick check up, returned her to the wild – to the protected forests of Besikalung sacred Temple. We’re so grateful for their fast response and care.

Pangolins are critically endangered, victims of habitat loss, illegal trafficking, and overhunting.
If we don’t act now, we may lose this species forever... even here in Bali.

We urge the Government to protect the remaining river valleys and green corridors, and to act urgently to preserve what wildlife we have left. Let this pangolin be a wake-up call to us all, that change is urgently needed.

You can watch a video of this special pangolin’s release back into the wild where she – and all wildlife – belongs, here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=thnn94zIpw8

Green School Supports BAWA’s Animal Health Day Initiative 🐾

Huge thanks to Green School for their continued support in improving the health and well-being of community dogs. In a joint effort to create a safer, healthier environment, Green School partners with BAWA to carry out a catch-neuter-vaccinate-release program in the surrounding area, and to help local families who cannot afford sterilization for their dogs.

Thanks to this collaboration, 34 animals were sterilized and 50 were vaccinated against rabies in just one day. This not only protects the dogs but also safeguards the wider community and provides education on the health and welfare of their companions.

BAWA’s Animal Health Day initiative is part of a One-Health approach — because when animals are healthy, people and communities are healthier too.

🙏 Thank you Green School for being part of the solution.

Let’s bring this life-saving program to more villages across Bali.

THREE SURVIVED JUST IN TIME

The BAWA rescue team rushed to a heartbreaking call – four kittens drowning in a river. Tragically, one had already succumbed to the current. But three survived, and they are now safe and recovering at our shelter.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the kind person who reported the kittens. Thank you for caring, for acting quickly, and for giving them a chance at life.

But our shelter is bursting.

Every day, more animals in desperate need are reported to us. We have taken in the three survivors, but our resources are stretched to the limit. We are already providing life-saving care, food, medical treatment, and healing to hundreds of animals – many who have endured unimaginable trauma.
We need your help.
To keep rescuing, healing, and caring for animals like these kittens, we urgently need support. You can make a difference by:

🧡 Donating – Every bit helps us cover food, medicine, and veterinary care.
🐾 Fostering or adopting – Give an animal a safe, loving home.
🙏 Providing supplies – Towels, food, deworming and parasite treatments are always needed.

Please, stand with us. Let’s make sure every animal in Bali has a chance at life and love.
Donate. Foster. Adopt. Share.

🙏 From all of us at BAWA – thank you 🧡

Proud moment for Program Dewata!

At the 6th ICAM International Conference, BAWA (represented by Ade Andreawan) and our long-time partner FOUR PAWS (represented by Marissa Arief) shared our joint work: “Program Dewata: Bridging Animal Welfare and Public Health Through a One Health Approach to Humane Rabies Control in Bali.”

Through health days, dog population mapping, education and awareness, capacity building, and multi-stakeholder advocacy, Program Dewata turns compassion into action. It’s not just about rescuing animals, but about shifting mindsets and empowering communities to protect animals, people, and the environment.

Together, we’re building a future where every village in Bali can be a sanctuary for animals. 🐾🌿

THANK YOU, THINK PACIFIC & UK STUDENTS - GLOBAL TEAM PROJECT

We had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate once again this summer with Think Pacific, an organization that arranges educational trips to Bali for college and university students from the UK. The purpose of these trips is to foster learning and exchange through special projects—and specifically with BAWA, to focus on animal health and welfare. Last week, BAWA presented two projects to the students aimed at addressing some of our current issues.

In just four days of learning about BAWA’s mission and challenges—responding daily to calls about sick and injured animals while building long-term sustainable programs—they offered fresh, thoughtful, and creative ideas to support our work.

From strategies to boost adoptions, to proposals aimed at engaging businesses in our sustainability efforts, these students brought genuine passion and innovation.

Thank you, Think Pacific, and every student who contributed your energy, insight, and heart to help us make a greater impact.

UPDATE: INCIDENT IN PERERENAN

Following our urgent post regarding a suspected dog slaughter in Pererenan, the BAWA team conducted a full investigation.

We can now confirm: the animal killed was not a dog, but a goat.
While the original report was made in good faith by a deeply distressed witness, and the scene understandably caused alarm, we want to clarify the facts and ensure our supporters have accurate information.

At BAWA, we take all reports of animal cruelty seriously. We acted swiftly out of concern and compassion, and we remain committed to transparency and accountability.

🙏 Thanks to the klian of Pererenan who spoke to the construction workers - and educated them about the illegality of the dog meat trade. Thank you to everyone who helped us investigate, shared information, and spoke out.

💛 Our mission remains: to protect all animals in Bali and advocate for their welfare and for them to be treated with compassion.
