At the weekend I got to meet the lovely Sasha and her owners Ollie and Karen! Well to say it was a successful session is an understatement! Sasha’s owner’s contacted me for issues regarding lead pulling and reactivity towards cars! Reactivity towards cars in shepherd’s is quite common so we tackled both problems using systematic desensitisation and counter conditioning with positive reinforcement! All we had to do was establish Sasha’s threshold of reactivity and worked from there and then we applied focus! Sasha did not pull on the lead once with me or her owners and she did not react to cars. Well done to her owners, they did a fabulous job! Safe to say Sasha was knackered after the training. A lot clients ask me how do I stop my dog from pulling towards other dogs. This is your answer, focus training and counter conditioning. As a trainer it is always beneficial to have another training dog to implement reality to show the owner that the exercise can work. This exercise allows your dog to think for themselves and problem solve “rather than paying attention/ reacting or looking at another dog, they will willing choose to work with you and maintain focus. Yes we use food for this exercise to build the foundation of the behaviour, however, we ask the dog to work more for less rewards once it’s implemented. We also use toys and praise for reinforcement to maintain the dogs focus. Loose lead work, no aversion methods like choke chains, prong collars or pulling. Always work with a dogs threshold. No more Pulling! We are using positive reinforcement based training and rewarding Charlie for checking in with his owner Emma which is solving nag his pulling issue. Fantastic results.
