This little lamb was in for a hernia repair surgery this week 🐑

Hernias are holes in the body wall where lengths of fat, intestine or abdominal contents can pass through the hole and sit under the skin.

1. Getting weighed before his surgery ⚖️
2. Assessing the hernia before surgery prep 👀
3. All prepped and ready to go 🧼
4. Surgery finished with some silver spray to protect the skin/wound ✨

Blood serum eye drops! 👁️ 🩸

A treatment for eye ulcers that we commonly use is serum eye drops. This requires taking blood from your dog or cat, spinning it down to remove the blood cells and keeping the pale serum which contains many natural healing properties and protective enzymes to speed up ulcer healing.

This is then used as an eye drop 3-4 times daily until the ulcer is healed.

Corneal ulcers are very common in cats and dogs, and serum eye drops are an essential part of the treatment given to them ❤️

Meet Voodoo, a 2-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who ingested over 100 tablets of ibuprofen, a common household pain medication. Her owner found the chewed-up packaging on the floor and noticed she had vomited large clumps of pills - Voodoo ingested a minimum of 10,000mg of ibuprofen! ‼️

Voodoo was immediately taken to an emergency hospital for evaluation. At that time, she was not acting like her normal happy, friendly self. Voodoo was unable to stand and walk without support. The veterinary team there acted quickly and transferred her to CASE for further treatment with the Extracorporeal Team (Dialysis with a specialized carbon-based filter).

Ibuprofen, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is great for our aches and pains in people but not so much for our four-legged companions. Ibuprofen can cause serious side effects dependent on the dose ingested. Side effects can include gastric ulcerations, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, kidney failure, central nervous system depression/coma and can potentially be lethal.

When Voodoo arrived at CASE she was initially very depressed. She was given a medication called naloxone, this is used to decrease the neurologic effects reducing the risk of developing pneumonia. After this she slowly started to stand up and was able to (very wobbly) walk around with her tongue sticking out!

Our Extracorporeal team got started on prepping Voodoo to undergo a procedure called hemoperfusion, a treatment made available by Aimologic. This is a special dialysis treatment used in the removal of toxic substances such as ibuprofen. We accomplish this by moving the patients entire blood volume about 5-7 times over through a charcoal filter that traps these harmful toxins. Halfway thru our treatment Voodoo became more awake and by the end of treatment she was able to walk on her own and became more active! Due to the large amount Voodoo ingested she required a second treatment the next day when she became quieter again. After 2 hemoperfusion treatments, and a total of 3 days of hospitalization, Voodoo was discharged from our hospital and has since made a complete recovery!

Does your dog or cat have bad breath? 🥴

Have you checked their teeth recently? 🦷

By the age of 3, most dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease. Early signs include bad breath, plaque build up on the teeth and red and swollen gums. When left untreated, bacteria builds up and causes infection, pain, inflammation and diseased teeth!

The only way to treat this is through a professional cleaning. Once plaque/tartar has built up on the teeth and dental disease is present, brushing won’t help. Removing the plaque from beneath the gum line is vital.

A dental exam once a year with your vet is important to maintain your pets oral hygiene and health. Brushing, feeding a dry food diet and giving healthy dental chews can help with reducing plaque build up in between cleanings.

Check your pets teeth today. You might be surprised at what you find!

‼️ As we all get ready for the Christmas weekend, it’s important to be conscious of what you’re feeding your pets! ‼️

I know we all like to give our dogs a little treat on Christmas Day but just be aware of what and how much you are feeding!

Keep chocolates and other toxic foods up high and away from reach of your pets and if feeding some of the Christmas dinner as a treat, keep the portion small and unseasoned with just plain meat and veg with NO BONES so as not to cause any upset stomachs or blockages 🐶🤮

If you are worried that your dog has ingested any food that may be toxic to them, make sure to get them to the vet as soon as possible! We will have vets on call throughout the Christmas period for emergencies!

An important read for all puppy owners 👇🏼

An important read for all puppy owners 👇🏼

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

🔥🌡

With the heat we are currently experiencing at the moment, it is so important to protect your pet from heat stroke!

Dogs and cats cannot respond to heat the same way we do so we have to be extra careful to provide them with a cool, well-ventilated and shaded environment with access to clean, drinking water and to not walk them during the middle of the day when temperatures are at their highest.

It is best to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening to prevent heat stroke and burnt paws from the hot pavement. If you think your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, please contact us immediately.
