With the weather improving, the grazing period is starting, so here are a few things to consider to prepare the cattle for turnout.
Preparing cattle for turnout.
Vaccinations: Black leg ( out of stock until further notice)
IBR
BVD
Leptospirosis
Boluses: Trace elements are vital for cows to capture and use the energy and protein as well as supporting other critical biological functions. Grass protein and energy levels are at their highest in the spring. Whilst they are the most significant ingredients in cattle growth and healthy production, they need to be in balance with trace elements and vitamins. Grass can be abundant in protein and energy but be deficient in minerals. Of grass is growing rapidly, and trace element levels are diluted. By offering a trace element bolus before turnout, you will have daily supply of the essential trace elements for up to 6 months.
Dosing for fluke: If a liver fluke treatment is needed at this time of the year, a product that targets adult liver fluke will reduce egg contamination on pastures. Here at Lakeland Veterinary Services, we have a few different dosing brands available for both cattle and sheep.
For gut worms, adult cattle do not usually need a treatment, and calves thay were born and raised indoors until now will be free of worms until they are released to pastures and do not need treatment for turnout. Dairy calves should be monitored closely and might need treatment soon after turnout if a high parasite burden is expected on grazing.
Spot on: Spot on treatment also should be used on cattle before letting them out. This will control lice flies and ticks and the diseases they carry.
