PRE-EXERCISE MEAL NO LONGER A NO-NO!

Why could we not feed horses just before exercise in the past, yet nowadays we're encouraged to?

The answer is...

In the past, feeds tended to be high energy, high starch concentrates including cereal grains, grain-based mixes and nuts. They were often fed in relatively large amounts e.g. 2kg (4.5lb) per meal or more. It would not be healthy to exercise a horse straight after that sort of meal.

Nowadays, a pre-exercise meal of high-fibre feed is often recommended in order to ensure the stomach isn't empty during exercise, which may lead to acid splashing and a lack of blood supply which in turn can lead to damage of sensitive stomach-lining tissue.

So the difference is down to both the type of meal and also to our understanding of stomach health.

FORAGE ALONE CAN MAKE YOUR HORSE TOO FAT ❗️

This one is worth repeating.

Grass (in summer and winter), all types of hay (including organic meadow hay) and haylage can all cause obesity.

Don't assume that all fat horses are overfed from a bucket. Some will happily eat double the normal intake of forage if fed ad lib (free choice).

Some owners already know this, but more and more horses and ponies who aren't fed much in a bucket are obese, and there a persistent myth that if you feed natural non-ryegrass hay, they will regulate and stay a healthy weight.

This is simply not true.

Some will overeat more after restriction; some will regulate if fed ad lib (but not many); some will literally eat themselves to death (yes, even on just hay).
Horses are all VERY different so be open minded and MONITOR your horse or pony regularly and carefully.

Also worth noting is that horses and ponies can come down with laminitis on hay-only diets, without grass. This is more unusual than those who get laminitis whilst grazing, but I have come across several cases of the former.

Monitor, monitor, monitor your horses and ponies to avoid and manage obesity.

Please help spread the word by sharing - thank you

We have had Tamlaght Equestrian Care to our yard three times for the entire day where Lynette looked after many clients. The time, effort and care she gives to each horse and rider is exceptional. I couldn’t recommend her enough. Well deserved, lots of hard work and dedication have made this happen!

Well it's official. I'm now a Qualified Saddle Fitter with the SMS as well as a Level 4 Advanced IASF fitter.

Both of these organisations exist to ensure horse welfare comes first and I am very proud knowing I have 2 super organisations behind me. The Society of Master Saddlers International Academy of Saddle Fitters

Watch out - are you being hoodwinked into buying a supplement as a cure all? 🚫

I'm a little tired of cure-all adverts for supplements on social media, criticising other products with untruths about fillers and suchlike.

Your horse is likely to benefit much more from some lifestyle changes than some herbal reset or gut cure-all.

I'm not saying herbs or other supplements are bad, or useless, but if the emphasis is put on a whole-horse strategy with attention paid to a well-balanced diet and behavioural needs, you may find the extra, expensive supplement unnecessary.

Here's a tip - if you read a very compelling advert for a supplement, why not go away and think about it for 24 hours, consider the rest of your horse's diet & lifestyle, then make your decision.

Then be sure to change nothing else while you feed it, so you can get a true picture of how much it has helped (or not).

Or you could just buy the thing, ignore the rest of your horse's diet & lifestyle, and potentially waste your money.

It's up to you, after all. It's your horse and your money.

I'm just seeing a lot of cleverly worded ads that promise all sorts of unproven, rather silly results, and I wanted to alert those of you who are after the truth..

NUTRITION TIPS FOR TRAVELLING AND STAY-AWAY SHOWS & CLINICS

Now that the season of clinics, horse holidays and far-flung competition is arriving, be sure to consider your horse's diet. All changes to the diet including forage should be made gradually and this is often forgotten when owners take their horses away to clinics or competitions over several days. The stress and dehydration caused by travelling also needs to be considered.

Consider:
🐴 Take your horses’ normal forage with them to clinics – changing immediately risks colic
🐴 Never put your horse onto a straw bed from a diet of mostly grazing - if they eat lots of straw overnight with no adaptation period, they risk impaction colic
🐴 Feed salt daily to replace sodium lost in sweat – 1 tablespoon for a 500kg horse in light work, and up to three times this if they’ve sweated substantially
🐴 Use soaked feeds to encourage good hydration e.g. soaked hay, mashes, unmolassed sugar beet but introduce them gradually and have the horse’s gut adapted to them before you travel
🐴 Consider a gut supporting supplement/digestive aid to help the horse cope with the stress of travel and a new environment
🐴 Don’t feed your horse for work you’re going to do; feed them for the work done. In that way you’ll reduce the risk of muscle issues like tying up
🐴 If you are concerned that your horse will have enough energy from their feed whilst at a clinic or competition, ask yourself - are they fit enough for that event?

If you found this useful, please share!

Lungeing sessions should not last longer than 20 minutes. Here’s why:

• Horses did not evolve to move in circles.
• Lungeing is hard work on the horse’s joints, tendons and muscles.
• Overwork on the lunge (or any situation) can cause pain, injury, discomfort and fatigue.

According to Australian researchers, ‘In an 18-m diameter round-pen, approximately 20 circuits equal 1 km. In just 20 minutes of lunging or round-pen work, a horse may cover around 5 km in distance which, as we postulate, poses musculoskeletal risks due to the constant circular track. Therefore, round-pen/lunging sessions exceeding 20 minutes should be avoided’ (https://tinyurl.com/CuttingTheChase).

For more recommendations about lungeing for horse welfare and rider safety, download Pony Club Australia’s NEW Lungeing Guidelines https://tinyurl.com/lungeing

Due to getting busier with my coaching clients I am currently looking for someone to do some yard work 2-3 weekdays mornings from 9-12. They must be experienced and confident with youngstock and competition horses, be able to use their own initiative and have a high standard of work. The location of the yard is remote, own transport is a necessity.
