Some good resources here to help

As the first stage of the restrictions on XL Bully dogs announced by DAERA begins today, we want to share some valuable resources that may be helpful for XL Bully owners.

We understand this is a concerning time, but please know that support is available. You are not alone! 🐾💙

The new rules are being introduced in two stages.

Today’s changes are:
⚫️ Public Restrictions: XL Bullies must be on a lead and muzzled in public.
⚫️ Breeding Ban: Breeding from XL Bullies is prohibited.
⚫️ Rehoming Ban: Selling, giving away, or rehoming XL Bullies is not allowed.
⚫️ Stray Prevention: Abandoning or letting an XL Bully stray is an offence.
Secure Conditions: Dogs must be kept in secure conditions to prevent escaping.

Some owners may think they couldn't possibly train their dog to wear a muzzle and then fear that their XL bully can never be out in public.

The 2nd stage of the new regulations takes effect on 1st January 2025.
Ownership Restrictions: From 1 January 2025, owning an XL Bully without an Exemption Certificate will be illegal.

Exemption Requirements:
⚫️ Microchip your dog by 8 weeks old.
⚫️ Neuter your dog by 18 months old.
⚫️ Obtain third-party public liability insurance.
⚫️ Pay an application fee of £92.40.

Obtaining third party public liability insurance is not as difficult or as expensive as owners may think. And it's Dogs Trust to the rescue, again!

Join their Companion Club for just £25 a year (£12.50 if you're 60+) and you will then have the public liability insurance needed for your exemption certificate.

We understand how emotive this post may be but we want to assure our pet parents that help is at hand and the rules are not as scary as they seem.
